Title: Using Wine to Play Games in Ubuntu Post by: Vision on September 10, 2010, 03:28:00 PM I was thinking of switching from OSX to Ubuntu, and noticed I can use wine to play TF2 and WoW (the only computer games I really play anyway), and was wondering what the resource sacrifices were using wine? Assuming there are no glitches, does using wine to play games in linux sacrifice system resources more so than if I just ran them in OSX?

I don't think it's less expensive like OSX (as you would think if you are using Parallels) but there's usually been extra config to get things running under Wine that have never worked for me. Also, it's only available up to XP SP2 I think...

For the major ones, I never had any issue getting them to work through Wine and they worked well. In comparison to running them natively, the framerates were lower, but it was depedent on the game as far as how much lower. For things like WoW, the difference wasn't really enough to notice. I also didn't notice a huge difference between Windows and Linux for HL2 based games like Counter-Strike or TF2.
If you want a pretty front end on Wine, you can always try CrossOver. That worked well in my experience too. As far as the difference between Linux and OSX? I ran a Hackintosh box for a while with CrossOver games. It was very similar performance to Linux. I have a PC and it works well enough with Windows 7, so I just hung it up. Linux Mint and its various flavors are phenomenal, however, so I would love to find a way for it to work reliably.
If you want to have WOW, Eve and TF2 work relatively painlessly you can always use Codeweavers (http://www.codeweavers.com/), but some would consider that cheating.
