Title: Revolution Under Siege: It's like someone made a game just for Lum
Post by: Stormwaltz on August 26, 2010, 11:30:55 AM
Revolution Under Siege: 1917-1923 (http://www.ageod-forum.com/showthread.php?t=18472)

Quote
From a ragtag group of volunteers create the powerful Red Army, using all the weaponry and equipment at your disposal: planes, tanks, armoured trains, Cheka troops and the Konarmia (the famous Red Cavalry). Or, on the opposite side, gather all patriots and reform the elite divisions that shall save Holy Mother Russia. Can you succeed in crushing the Bolshevik hydra? Or will the People's Revolution prevail?

Several sides are playable: Trotsky’s Red Army, Denikin’s white counter-revolutionary forces of Southern Russia, Kolchak’s Siberians, Finnish from both sides, or the newly independent Polish troops led by Marshal Piłsudski.

The game uses the AGE engine, famous from AGEOD's American Civil War and Rise of Prussia, renown and awarded wargames.

One early screenshot here: http://www.ageod-forum.com/showthread.php?p=184780#post184780

EDIT: Added name of game to thread title.

Lum isn't the only one with the Red Army Chorus on his iPod.

I'm so gonna buy this, unless it's Paradox buggy.

Have you played any of the AGEOD games before? They're a little rough around the edges and pretty neckbeardy.

I've never even heard of the company. I haven't done wargaming in ages, except on the tabletop.

I've always thought the Russian Civil War was wacky and chaotic enough to make a great strategy game. Not sure this one is it, though. A true civil war sim would need to be more political than military, something that makes most wargamers itchy.

I think KOEI did pretty well with their American Revolutionary war sim.

I seem to recall the choices were at the begining were these really awesomely powerful guys with tons of soldiers, tons of ships and a fuckton of money, vs some random colonials.

AGEOD does good work so I have high hopes. Their American Civil War sim is the tits and has plenty of political decisions in the mix.

Incidentally, they are now Paradox France as Paradox bought the studio but more or less keep them as a separate entity with their own deal. Check their game pages and get some stuff; just stay away from Great Invasions, which is awesome but doesn't really run on Vista or later.

Yeah, note I said begining.  To actually get any of the other colonial powers involved you had to score some type of significant victory against the British, and the Spanish were typically hard to get involved as they had just finished a rather expensive war with the British.

A few "pre-beta" screenshots on a French site. (http://www.strategium-alliance.com/Revolution-Under-Siege.8227.0.html)

For now, we are planning digital distribution only. It just is too costly to make a physical version in advance when we don't know if the game will find a broader public than we expect  (we don't fool ourselves, we know the Russian Civil War is not actually mainstream, but we hope we will get a good share of interest from the wargaming community, like here.)

And there's a shot of the strategic map dev posted on The Wargamer. (http://www.wargamer.com/forums/fb.ashx?m=469021) The post also has some new details.

I hate when they market games by trying to make Latin letters look Russian.

I hate when people call the Cyrillic alphabet Russian.

Wargamer.com has a small preview article up.

http://www.wargamer.com/article/2961/revolution-under-siege

Quote
Although parts of the game’s engine are standard, Revolution under Siege has a great deal of new and fascinating concepts. Most scenarios have more than one faction. The Reds, Southern Whites, Siberian Whites, Poles, Finns and anarchists fight between themselves. Foreign intervention can introduce the armies of the Western Allies and the Central Powers. As if that wasn’t enough, some Russians just want to go their own way and form the “Greens” uncontrolled by any player.

Although some factions use the standard regiment/brigade scale, the Reds have even smaller elements of either special troops or hangers-on. These units make the composition of larger forces even more interesting and put strains on the fairly poor Communist leadership until Trotsky appears. Trotsky, with his special abilities, can turn the motley Bolsheviks into a formidable fighting force.

Awaiting review! I have kind of a big backlog right now so I'm not feeling a strong urge to download this immediately.

I have it but my plate has been full here lately. It looks dense, as all AGEOD games are. Sadly, I actually need to relearn the engine because it's been a few years since I fired up Napoleon. It looks to be similar to all their other titles using the AGE engine so if you've played those you should have a good starting point. People are gushing in various forums, for what it's worth, saying it's quite a bit like their Civil War game in play.

There's a demo up on Filefront.

The NA release is through Matrix Games, a swell grognard wargame publisher. They have digital copies for $40 and boxed copies (really just the digital copy burned on disc, with a DVD case - both custom printed) for $50.
