Title: Cop Out
Post by: HaemishM on August 23, 2010, 09:25:48 AM
Couldn't find a topic already made for this movie and yes I did search. I watched this on DVD this weekend. Bruce Willis, Tracey Morgan, Seann William Scott in a buddy cop comedy caper movie directed (but not written) by Kevin Smith. I love Kevin Smith's movies, and this was not one of them. The writing really let this movie way down. There were funny parts, mainly from what appeared to be improvs by both Morgan and Scott, and the occasional Bruce Willis line, but for the most part the whole movie was pretty dull. The main villain was a clown. The setup and the plot made little real sense, and only seemed to serve to build up situations where Morgan could act crazy. If you have 107 minutes to kill and can't think of anything else to do, it's an ok movie to watch, but I wouldn't seek it out. It's just not worth it.

Incidentally, the action scenes were decent if unspectacular. Smith had said he dropped out of the Green Hornet film because he didn't like filming action, but he isn't bad at it. In fact, the direction was good for the most part. But the writing? UGH.

I find it strange that since KS is a writer of no small talent that he would tolerate a poorly written script. Maybe he just wanted to make the transition to pure director - the sweetest gig in Hollywood if you can get it.

Scuttlebutt is that the movie he wanted was HUGELY different from what we got. It was originally called "A Couple of Dicks" but the studio kept messing with it and messing with it so he finally had the name changed to "Cop Out" because that's what he said the movie had turned into.
