Title: Scott Pilgrim vs The World
Post by: Rendakor on August 11, 2010, 10:21:21 PM
Just picked this up from the Playstation Network; it's a sidescrolling beat-em-up in the vein of Rivercity Ransom, with up to 4 player co-op.  :drill:

Sorry. It's based on the movie, which I figured at least most people would've heard about.

I think this game is freaking brilliant. The concept is they made a game as though it were made by a Japanese company that just barely understands the comic. So there's armies of zombies, guys in big plush alien costumes, and fucking Knight Rider. (Source was author Brian Lee O'Malley's message board at scottpilgrim.ning.com, and I can't find the original post but you can dig around there if you want.)

So yeah, mindless brawling where you can pick up your friends and smack enemies with them repeatedly on the head, and nods to 8-bit games are slathered everywhere. I have a feeling it'd get old after a while, and a lot of stuff may be meaningless if you're not familiar with the books. We were playing this at lunch and were all "OMG THERE'S MONIQUE AND OTHER SCOTT AND GIDEON THE CAT!" while other coworkers would go "Those background guys have names? and you KNOW THEM ALL?"

This is more god damn proof that people who say this movie is for 20soemthings are full of god damn shit.

I mean, seriously. Basing a god damn game on River City Ransom, and expecting kids who were four when the game came out?

This shit is for "us".

I don't see how the game being based on RCR means the movie isn't for twenty-somethings. :uhrr: Furthermore, I'm 26 and I loved RCR when I was like 7.

Really, I was skewing towards early 20s, but it does surprise me that someone younger remembers that game. I figured it would be JUST old enough for people mid 20s and down to not know/remember it.

Additionally, it's not like it can't be for people who know it, but the criticism of the movie, book and game have been that it serves early 20s only.

I'll posit that is because the folks doing the reviews of the movie are in their 50's and haven't "Gotten" a movie since The Breakfast Club or "Thirtysomething".  Meanwhile those doing the book and game are in their late 30's to 40's and beginning to realize how out of touch they're quickly becoming.

But then I'm a 36 year old cynic.
