Title: Favorite Video Game Soundtrack Post by: Vision on July 26, 2010, 03:13:29 PM Mine would have to be Heaven's Night, the Silent Hill 2 soundtrack. Just extremely well done save the hard rock songs. I also like WoW's taven music CD, for nostalgic reasons.

Title: Re: Favorite Video Game Soundtrack Post by: Sjofn on July 27, 2010, 12:06:09 PM I am glad to hear Age of Conan has good music, it is only appropriate given Conan the Barbarian's movie score is rad ass.
Great song in World of Warcraft, or Greatest song in World of Warcraft? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jUZfofhhV0 Runners up for WoW, entirely because the tuba rocks my face: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYSHFQBJZeo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QP16cK0NzZE You do sort of have to tune out the voices, especially with the goblin one. :oh_i_see: Title: Re: Favorite Video Game Soundtrack Post by: Kail on July 27, 2010, 02:12:50 PM Jet Set Radio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwdF4FwkeRY&feature=PlayList&p=803EDE4111028745&index=1&playnext=1) was pretty awesome, I thought.
Chrono Trigger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqTZfknDVes) was probably the first game where I was really impressed with how well the soundtrack carried the mood of the game. Eve Online (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbDdowk025g&feature=PlayList&p=7557A1AECA830CC1&playnext=1&index=29) Trinity login theme - perfectly fits the mood of game Cala Title: Re: Favorite Video Game Soundtrack Post by: ahoythematey on July 27, 2010, 04:49:14 PM I realize it's a rather popular choice, but I love the Chrono Cross (Yasunori Mitsuda) soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG7fr4CYer8) quite a bit.
Another favorite is Shadow of the Colossus (Kow Otani) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--6-9LnvRXA). Katamari Damacy (Yu Miyake, Various Artists) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7liKMW6rhM) is always in my head. Too much console in that list, though, so I'll cap it off with one of my very favorite PC soundtracks: Doom 2 (Bobby Prince) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkhCNx-8Qos). Title: Re: Favorite Video Game Soundtrack Post by: Surlyboi on July 28, 2010, 07:19:35 AM Backing up everyone that said I76. That shit was awesome, ditto JSRF. I still break that out on occasion to bop through that bizarre mirror Tokyo.
Red Dead Redemption's score is pitch perfect for the game. A good mention also needs to go out to a couple of the radio stations in GTA 4, especially Radio Broker and Liberty Rock Radio. Both of these partially because of Juliette Lewis and Iggy Pop's DJ capacities. Title: Re: Favorite Video Game Soundtrack Post by: Stormwaltz on July 28, 2010, 09:05:11 AM I don't think I could pick a single game's soundtrack that's uniformly good. Most of them have a lot of filler.
According to Last.fm, my favorite game song is "Rose of Victory" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7pTKOTSEeI) from EVE. It's the only game song on my top ten playlist. My favorite from LotRO is "Silent Hope" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OT6hV-aKfOI), which plays around Bag End. I also like most of the dwarven music and the Bree-Land guitar themes like "Autumn Ale" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Y1Xq5nMx2E). The use of acoustic instruments gives Bree an earthy and authentic feel that the synthesized "epic" scores of other games can't match. I've really enjoyed the score to AoC: Rise of the Godslayer. It sounds authentically Eastern, but tones down the unusual time signatures and whatnot that tend to alienate Western ears. I haven't listened to it enough to pick a standout track. Oblivion's soundtrack created a unique, gentle mood. I strongly associate the music with the game, more so than with other game music. I see the landscapes rolling by, the grass waving in the wind. My favorite track from that was "Wings of Kynaerth" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yo3e9a7QKqM). The crescendos are dazzlingly pretty. Xenosaga I, a mediocre game, managed to have a song that raises the hairs on my arm every time I hear it; "World to be Born" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AMMnIn7uwM). I can see starships leaving orbit for parts unknown when I listen. I think it's obligatory to include a song from Halo. My favorite's "Unyielding" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hHXUyeVhbg), which to my ear has touches of progressive rock in it (starting at 1:50). Plus, I love that the bassline in the early part is played on piano. If you'll excuse the bias, "Suicide Mission" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2z28mutY1E) from Mass Effect 2 is one of my favorite pieces of action music. I left before the soundtrack was recorded, so I first heard it when I bought the OST. It caught me flatfooted. I play it louder than any other game song. - I adjust settings on my soundcard to get it up to 11. Title: Re: Favorite Video Game Soundtrack Post by: naum on July 28, 2010, 09:29:10 AM I generally turn the music off in any game.
Oddly, this epic indy TBS game (http://www.shrapnelgames.com/Illwinter/DOM3/DOM3_page.html) with amateur graphics probably offers the best music soundtrack I've enjoyed. You can sample some of the music from Erik Ask Uppmark and Anna Rynefors here: http://www.hacklopedia.com/Music/Music.shtml Title: Re: Favorite Video Game Soundtrack Post by: Rasix on July 28, 2010, 11:12:35 AM Beyond Good and Evil had a very awesome soundtrack.

Jpop in a very Japanese game works pretty well. Title: Re: Favorite Video Game Soundtrack Post by: Yegolev on July 28, 2010, 11:41:57 AM Omikron.
:why_so_serious: Agree on Persona 3+4. I put them in my coffee. FFIV. Maybe just me but it is burned into my soul. I always have enjoyed the music in EVE Online. Diablo had a fantastic soundtrack. Also agree about Katamari Damacy. The first one, to be clear. The later ones were not bad, really, but less good and possibly an egregious affront to the original. Title: Re: Favorite Video Game Soundtrack Post by: Rasix on July 28, 2010, 02:28:06 PM FFIV. Maybe just me but it is burned into my soul. FFVI as well. A lot of great moody pieces in that one. You can blow it out your nose if you think Everlasting Love isn't as good if not better than any song on the original Katamari soundtrack. Title: Re: Favorite Video Game Soundtrack Post by: Yegolev on July 28, 2010, 11:36:10 PM Quote Also agree about Katamari Damacy. The first one, to be clear. There were ones and twos on the later set that I really got into, but several tracks were just remixes of previous ones. The whole thing, though? I have to go with the first game. The sequels tried too hard on basically every front, while managing to be unoriginal in most ways. But yea, there were a few tracks that were good. Title: Re: Favorite Video Game Soundtrack Post by: Furiously on July 29, 2010, 01:49:19 AM I'll go with Star Control 2 also.
Title: Re: Favorite Video Game Soundtrack Post by: Surlyboi on July 29, 2010, 07:14:09 AM Fuck, how could I forget Fallout 3?
The only drawback to that was that there weren't enough songs in the rotation. Title: Re: Favorite Video Game Soundtrack Post by: kaid on July 29, 2010, 07:15:45 AM That bongo bongo bongo song makes me want to punch monkies hehe but yes the fallout 3 sound track is good if short.
Title: Re: Favorite Video Game Soundtrack Post by: Sir T on July 30, 2010, 01:50:03 AM I've always liked the Age of Wonders II soundtrack. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSwsEcp3Or4

Title: Re: Favorite Video Game Soundtrack Post by: proudft on July 30, 2010, 01:18:34 PM The Halo one reminded me of one I forget - Medieval II: Total War or Medieval Total War: II, whatever it's called.

Well, some of the tracks anyway. I think it's more of a whole-package atmosphere thing, where the music fits the game fabulously but might not be so great to listen to in the car.
Title: Re: Favorite Video Game Soundtrack Post by: LC on August 01, 2010, 12:28:27 PM I like all of the final fantasy soundtracks, but my favorite game music came from Chrono Trigger.

I've got "Caramel Prisoner" by Air (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5Bb2AK2Ebk ) which is along the right lines but I'm after more. Much more. For reasons I don't want to discuss right now.
But to contribute: I reguarly listen to the Half-life 2/Ep I/Ep 2 soundtrack, Garry Schyman's Bioshock, Silent Hill 2 and the original Quake. Title: Re: Favorite Video Game Soundtrack Post by: Sir T on August 13, 2010, 06:53:22 AM There are places you can go to look for music like that. One of my favorites is www.freeplaymusic.com which has a whole load of music from all sorts of genres. Its where I got the music for the first part of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_vS_kDOGRs so you can see the wquality is pretty good.
You could also try http://www.westonemusic.com/ who do really good stuff as well A lot of the X3 Terran Conflict soundtrack has a similar feel to Eve too {Edit} Actually west one musics Absolution album/track collection really is excellent and is kind of in an Eve-ish vein. http://www.westonemusic.com/album?catno=WOM_WOM_0209 |
