Title: I need a good strategy game... Post by: WonderBrick on January 22, 2005, 11:38:19 AM I need a good strategy game, and am looking for a specific style...
I am looking for 2D, turn-based, tile-based, strategy, war games with individual unit control(1 tank = 1 tank, 1 plane = 1 plane, etc). Preferably as little political and manufacturing as possible, but if the actual combat tactics are good enough, I will put up with it. More specificly, I am looking for something that takes into account terrian you are traveling over, affecting the distance traveled per turn. Do any titles spring to mind? Many thanks. And while it contains some building and diplomacy options, Alpha Centauri is still one of the best strategy games around. Title: I need a good strategy game... Combat Misson seems the best defination. Closest thing to a tabletop game. Steel Panthers is free these days with HUGE combat lists of pretty much everything. Empire: Internet Deluxe edition just got released last month. Title: I need a good strategy game... Post by: Jain Zar on January 22, 2005, 02:37:12 PM Massive Assault is pretty good too.
Its 3d and not 2d tile based, but it just makes it all pretty when you realize your long range missles can shoot over the mountains because the enemy is moving their convoy right by it to get to your base.. Fantastic game that went under the radar, probably because it was buggy as hell. Hex-based tactics. The sequel, Domination, is coming out shortly.
Demo here. Title: I need a good strategy game... Post by: LordDax on January 22, 2005, 04:23:49 PM Battleground:Ardennes, if you can find a copy of it. In my opinion an almost flawless way to experience the final campaign of WWII.

Title: I need a good strategy game... Post by: Nebu on January 22, 2005, 10:17:58 PM Take a look at the Combat Mission (http://www.battlefront.com/products/cmbb/cmbb.html) games. They are 3d rendered, but very similar to the Avalon Hill games (i.e. Panzer Blitz, Squad Leader, etc.)
Title: I need a good strategy game... Post by: Train Wreck on January 24, 2005, 11:35:36 AM Age of Wonders II, and Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic. Excellent fantasy TBS that are generally recognized as the closest things we'll have to a sequal to Master of Magic.
By the way, if you can run DOS games, Master of Magic never gets old. Title: I need a good strategy game... Post by: AOFanboi on January 24, 2005, 12:55:34 PM Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/96102.asp?q=Alpha%20Centauri). Well, it pretends to have 3D features, but not in a serious way. Should be very cheap these days, it's on various budget labels out there.
For me, that is the be all and end all of strategy games. (Note: Despite the name, this is a "Brian Reynolds design". Not that it matters much. Except this is the REAL sequel to Civ II.) Title: I need a good strategy game... Post by: Sky on January 24, 2005, 01:10:10 PM Matters a lot to me. Imo Brian Reynolds > Sid Meier. Civ II, Colonization, Alpha Centauri, the guy has done the best. All with Sid's name on 'em ;)
Can't go wrong with Alpha Centauri, or GalCiv, or Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic (best HD support in a TBS). All three are must-own imo, but then, I love TBS. Title: I need a good strategy game... Post by: Righ on January 24, 2005, 06:27:15 PM Alpha Centauri and its expansion Alien Crossfire even runs well on a tired old Mac laptop, and it is a great game. Just as old, and almost as good is Imperialism II. I revisit both from time to time.
Axis and Allies and Korsum Pocket fit the bill. |
