Goddamn you, Pixar, you did it again.

Saw it this morning with the family and it's everything you expect it to be.  Funny, somewhat melancholy and over the top in absurdity at times.  The ending will really get to you if you can recall giving up your favorite toys.

'Course I'm sure you all expected nothing less than all that.

That's a rather big spoiler to throw up in the first post dude. Might wanna tag it.

Kids and I saw it last weekend.   Good stuff, 2 is still my favorite.

Great film, second half is very emotionally gripping. In some ways, I like it even better than 2, though 2 is just fantastic. Even better when you recall that the main issue between Disney and Pixar some years ago was that Eisner wanted to force Pixar to hammer out a cheap, quick "Toy Story 3" in the model of his straight-to-DVD sequels like Cinderella 2 etc. and Pixar told him that they'd only do it when or if they had a story concept that made it worth doing--and in this case, that meant partly waiting for enough time in the real world to pass for the story concept to actually be meaningful.

On the other hand, Pixar is challenging my faith in them by wanting to make "Cars 2", since "Cars" is the only truly shit movie they've ever made.

Cars is only "truly shit" because it came from Pixar. It's not anywhere near as good as the rest of their catalog, but it's still better than most of the crap that's peddled.

Cars is a hit when it comes to little kids, by and large they fucking ate that movie up with a spoon. I think we're so used to pixar movies being well, movies. that we often forget they can and do occasionally make things solely for this kids.

And compared to other stuff done exclusively for kids it wasn't that bad. I wasn't left wanting to claw my own eyes out at least.

Both my little cousins LOVED cars, own all the toys, and watch it all the time.

They are also NASCAR fans, so they may be broken.

On the plus side, the year after that they're supposed to be releasing a sequel to Monsters Inc., which is my second favorite Pixar movie after The Incredibles.

I like the exploration in Cars of how the interstate system dramatically reshaped life in America for a lot of people, but that part is all of like 5 minutes. The lack of a logical world drives me nuts. How are they born? There's some concept of parenting, and they clearly grow up, but where do little Cars come from?

Really?  The logic of a children's movie broke your mind?

Good lord I'm amazed some of you play games at times.

Compared to Monster's Inc which had a much more coherent and logical set of rules, yes. What function do tractors serve in the Cars world ecology?

Rules & logic don't always apply to entertainment, Mr. Literal.  It's a kids movie, think of it like a dream state.  If you can't, I'm sorry you're so horribly bereft of imagination that everything must have a logical slot in the framework of a greater world in your entertainment.

I'm trying to find a picture of a stoner watching Teletubbies so I can use it to make fun of your impassioned defense of Pixar's worst movie, but the Internet appears to be broken today.

Dude, if you'd watched that movie as many times as I have you'd be looking for some way to not stab yourself to death too. Nit picking is all I have. Thankfully we're on Mary Poppins kick now, but the Cars phase was a good 3 months, and we still have occasional relapses.

I really appreciate the effort Pixar puts into their films to create coherent, detailed worlds for their characters to live in. With Cars they threw all that out the window. I like the artistry of tire track shaped clouds and hood ornament mountains, but they phoned in the world creation overall.

worst movie? not at all. Subjectively worse maybe but kids LOVED cars and that's who the movie was made for so it's hard to say that's a failure.

a) The Phantom Menace is therefore better than anything Pixar has ever made, rite?
b) Cars's worldwide gross there is actually pretty dismal considering it was made at the height of Pixar's popularity.  In inflation-adjusted dollars it only BARELY beats Bug's Life, which is another strong contender for "worst Pixar movie" in my mind anyway, and that was made before they'd really built a name for themselves that would translate into automatic box office success.

It usually ends quickly and painfully under a shoe heel or on a windshield?

The characters were all pretty forgettable.  Except for the caterpillar, whom I remember because he was annoying as fuck.  Not a terrible kids' movie, but not one of my favorite Pixar films by a long shot.

Bah! Bug's Life is awesome. It's on the low end of my Pixar list but only because so much of what they've done is fantastic. The pill bug brothers were rad.

Bug's Life is not awesome. I mean, I've never seen any genitalia on any of the bugs so how do they reproduce? Also, the bugs fucking talk. I've never even seen a talking bug.

"Toy Story 3" is a prison movie you can take your kids to.  :grin:

I was a little surprised with how far Pixar pushed it - The Monkey is just plain freaky, the action climax gets very close to that point of no return while the emotional climax is probably aimed more at adults (I don't think the kids in the audience I was with quite got it while the adults blubbed).

Best new character is Ken (Micheal Keaton nails it) while Lotso is another great Pixar villain.

A great conclusion to the Toy Story series.

The preceding cartoon, "Day & Night", was a great mix of CGI and classic animation styles as well.

Cars is my least favorite, next to ratatouille, because of the whole southwest atmosphere where NASCAR is the national sport makes me think of bum-fuck New Mexico or another southwest shithole. When you combine that with the overt NASCAR flavor of the movie you get a "NASCAR story about the southwest," which is quite possible the LEAST interesting theme for a film that I can think of.

Toy Story 3 was probably my favorite in the series, or at least tied with 1.  I never really liked two. Something about Toys driving cars through traffic seemed a little TOO absurd, as absurd as that is to say for a movie about living toys.

I think some of you have forgotten what fun is, or how to just simply enjoy something.

Dude you should have seen me when I saw that last Rocky movie and George Foreman made a brief appearance. Up until then Rocky lived in some alternate dimension where none of the real heavyweight champs existed, and were all replaced with Apollo Creed and shit. But suddenly there was Foreman, and that meant that Ali must exist, and Holyfield, and all sorts of shit.

I immediately started thinking up alternate reality timelines and shit that would incorporate all the real fighters and all the fictional ones. Mike Tyson versus Clubber Lang, OMFG. Yes I know I'm broken.
