Title: Millions of tons of electronics going to waste
Post by: AlteredOne on January 21, 2005, 06:34:35 AM
Washington Post article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A24672-2005Jan20.html)

I'm surprised at how little press this has gotten.  As techno geeks you guys might appreciate it.

A few tips I've garnered:
- I fix up my old computers and donate them to charities that will use them.  Decent tax writeoff.  But of course, the charities may end up junking them. I try to make sure they are usable though.
- Build your own computer, and re-use a lot of components, and the case.    Don't have to throw out much that way, just the occasional motherboard and graphics card.
- Buy a really good LCD monitor, and drop the old bulky CRT ones for good.  Those things are huge, and are a disposal nightmare.
- Apparently Staples offers free recycling of electronics, from any source.

What are your thoughts?
