Title: Mortal Kombat Post by: Ozzu on June 08, 2010, 06:20:09 PM A short MK "movie" or teaser of some type. It has some decent names in it, so I'm not sure if it's just an 8 minute Youtube video or if there's an actual movie to follow.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_MqZn7E-mk&v Edit: Yeah, it's a movie. http://www.imdb.com/news/ni2782669/ Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Riggswolfe on June 08, 2010, 06:43:52 PM Looks shitty. Jeri Ryan is too old for Sonya. Killing off Johnny in the trailer is a mistake. The black dude was a terrible actor. The only thing that worked for me was Scorpion.
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Aez on June 08, 2010, 06:45:23 PM Reptile also worked. Baraka and the black cop are terrible.
I'll watch it. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: UnSub on June 08, 2010, 06:47:18 PM Yeah, I always thought Mortal Kombat was too soft and needed a dark re-imagining.
I'll watch it. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Draegan on June 08, 2010, 07:01:47 PM That was pretty much awesome.
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Lakov_Sanite on June 08, 2010, 07:06:31 PM Yeah, I always thought Mortal Kombat was too soft and needed a dark re-imagining. LOL indeed. That said, I'm going to watch this SO hard. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: DLRiley on June 08, 2010, 07:10:56 PM I gotta mourn for johnny cage :ye_gods:
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Lakov_Sanite on June 08, 2010, 07:19:00 PM Thinking about it though, the travesty of this movie will be if they end up following an uninteresting character like sonya. If the whole movie were scorpion? yes but I get the feeling we'll be stuck focused on liu kang again.
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: JWIV on June 08, 2010, 08:00:08 PM Johnny Cage is not afraid to die!
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Abagadro on June 08, 2010, 08:23:38 PM This is a "proof of concept" or "test" short that is sometimes made to try to sell studios on greenlighting a picture. So Cage dying won't necessarily happen in the actual film.
http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/2008-12-6-motion-captured/posts/what-is-that-mysterious-mortal-kombat-video?m=p Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: UnSub on June 08, 2010, 10:44:13 PM Johnny Cage punches men in the nuts as standard. Ergo, he must always die.
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Ozzu on June 09, 2010, 12:19:33 AM I wonder if the black cop dude (Jax) will start yanking people's arms off at some point. :why_so_serious:
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: WindupAtheist on June 09, 2010, 12:36:09 AM "We had Johnny Cage working for us undercover. Yeah, the old action star. Because I figured, hey, a guy whose face has probably been seen by everyone in the world would make a great undercover cop. Inexplicably, he was somehow beheaded on his first case."
But yeah, a Mortal Kombat flick with a hard R rating? I'm down. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: UnSub on June 09, 2010, 02:39:03 AM If you start to pick away at that, next you'll be asking how a deranged plastic surgeon became a martial arts expert, or why he didn't just stab Cage first thing.
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: K9 on June 09, 2010, 04:51:44 AM Chaps, it's a mortal fucking combat movie. If you're watching it for dialogue, acting talent or plot, you're doing it wrong.
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: dusematic on June 09, 2010, 06:02:12 AM This is the website lamenting the treatment of the legacy of GI Joe and Transformers.
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Ironwood on June 09, 2010, 06:20:07 AM Get over here.
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: 01101010 on June 09, 2010, 06:30:50 AM That 1 sec flash of sub-zero :drill:
That said, I will probably wait till it goes to PPV or DVD. But I will see this at some point. Lets hope they slut up Katana. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Bunk on June 09, 2010, 08:24:56 AM Looks shitty. Jeri Ryan is too old for Sonya. Killing off Johnny in the trailer is a mistake. The black dude was a terrible actor. The only thing that worked for me was Scorpion. You obviously haven't seen Black Dynamite. "I am smiling" Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: HaemishM on June 09, 2010, 10:37:33 AM I don't know, who put Saw in my Mortal Kombat movie? :oh_i_see:
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Slyfeind on June 09, 2010, 10:49:56 AM Christ, the '95 movie was perfect imo. What's next, a dark reimagining of SUPERMAN???
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Ironwood on June 09, 2010, 10:51:43 AM Red Son Please.
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: 01101010 on June 09, 2010, 11:03:34 AM (http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s146/phliptop18/subzero.jpg)
This makes me want to see the movie, for better or worse. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: sickrubik on June 09, 2010, 11:08:22 AM Looks like it was simply a pitch for someone's vision for a reboot. Not even sure how I feel about it. I may just not care enough about MK anymore. The only thing that made me giddy a little bit is hearing the "GET OVER HERE" after the fade to black. Well, and Cage dying was great.
http://kotaku.com/5558850/that-mortal-kombat-trailer-jeri-ryan-explains Quote "Okay, so... Mortal Kombat," she tweets. "It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film." Ryan said she did her role as a favor to a friend. "No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was," she adds. I can tell you what my reaction was: stoked. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Azazel on June 09, 2010, 12:17:18 PM That was just completely stupid.
I'll probably watch it via one of the free networks at some point in the distant future. If it gets made. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Slyfeind on June 09, 2010, 04:29:22 PM I like how they explained everything with science. That's what made the Street Fighter movie such a hit. And it's DARK!!! Like Batman. So the two together should make it AWESOME, LIKE HOW UWE BOLL DESCRIBED THE DUNGEON SIEGE MOVIE AS A CROSS BETWEEN BRAVEHEART AND LORD OF THE RINGS!!!
Christ that looks stupid. It's trying way too hard to be taken seriously. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: dusematic on June 09, 2010, 08:51:45 PM I mean doesn't a MK film have to be dark? It was the most violent and hardcore fighting game of its time. Seems like a pretty natural direction.
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Slyfeind on June 09, 2010, 10:42:55 PM I'd be ok with violent and hardcore, if it was still apeshit weird. Giving Reptile a skin condition is like making vampirism a disease.
I didn't get past "Code Name Baraka" before turning it off. I imagine "Code Name Shang Tsung" as a stage magician who went insane and cut himself, and "Code Name Rayden" as an electrician who went insane and cut himself. And "Code Name Sub Zero" as a dude with fire extinguishers...who went insane and cut himself. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Koyasha on June 10, 2010, 12:30:24 AM Yeah, that's what makes this whole thing insanely moronic. The looks and such are ok, but the premise is ridiculous. What, did they look at the existing Mortal Kombat movies and go, 'you know, what was really wrong with these was the Mortal Kombat universe/storyline/mythology/etc, let's take all that out.'?
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Margalis on June 10, 2010, 01:43:46 AM Mortal Kombat should be dark but not "gritty" or "realistic." Mortal Kombat is stupid and makes no fucking sense, trying to force it to make sense is retarded.
I watched the trailer without sound, it looked like a boring generic martial arts movie with goofy characters. Yeah, it's more "serious" compared to actual Mortal Kombat but it's still goofy as hell compared to a real movie. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: patience on June 10, 2010, 11:19:44 AM Guys settle down. The director pitching this concept is way ahead of you.
It's more like Grim Dark Harry Potter meets TDK. Exclusive Interview with MORTAL KOMBAT: REBIRTH Director Kevin Tancharoen; Learn How Short Film Came Together and What He Wants to do in a Feature. (http://www.collider.com/2010/06/09/kevin-tancharoen-interview-mortal-kombat-rebirth-feature-film/) He spent his own money and social capital to make this project happen but he already has it in mind to insert some mysticism into the project if he is picked. He's just going to make sure the mysticism has some grounded rules instead of making everyone McGuffin. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: pxib on June 10, 2010, 11:55:11 AM MORTAL KOMBAT!

Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Slyfeind on June 14, 2010, 02:56:00 PM I imagine "Code Name Rayden" as an electrician who went insane and cut himself. Quote from: Kevin Tancharoen http://www.collider.com/2010/06/09/kevin-tancharoen-interview-mortal-kombat-rebirth-feature-film/ Raiden’s not going to be an electrician with lasers on his forearm or anything like that. Lol. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Koyasha on June 14, 2010, 03:40:02 PM MK has a story and mythology? Not that most people who play the games would ever know, but yeah. I stumbled across some wiki with lots of information once when I was looking for a picture of Sheeva, and it went on and on about characters, story, etc. Pretty coherent for the most part, too, it seemed. The point about the mysticism having grounded rules and all that, that this guy talks about, is already there.Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Vision on June 14, 2010, 11:21:55 PM Personally I hated all the outer-world BS that they created in order to market some type of story-driven 3d action adventure/fighting game that one of Mortal Kombats 12,000 reiterations on the PS2 became.
Id like to see MK vs DC Universe 3d action gorefest with nukes and the original guy who played Goro in the 1995 version. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: 01101010 on April 13, 2011, 04:55:16 AM ARISE! Seems to be they are moving to webisodes for this. Part 1....annnnnd, action!

Part 2 is up. I can't say I am fully appalled by it, but it does feel like amateur hour. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: HaemishM on April 20, 2011, 08:46:30 AM It's not bad. It's over the top and the first two parts don't really seem to have much to do with Mortal Kombat, though it's also mostly just backstory. It's certainly better than Mortal Kombat 2. I want Jax to pull out some Black Dynamite shit, thought. :why_so_serious:

part 3... zzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz........ :oh_i_see: Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Muffled on April 27, 2011, 09:38:07 PM I'm actually enjoying this series quite a bit. Mostly through poking fun at it MST3K style, but I unironically enjoy most of the fight scenes and their different twist on the MK world. My expectations being as low as they could get and simultaneously playing through the new Mortal Kombat game helped quite a bit, too.
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Cadaverine on April 28, 2011, 04:34:25 AM For a small budget affair, it hasn't been half bad so far. Still plenty of time for it to go off the rails, I suppose. I don't really get Jeri Ryan as Sonya, though.
Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Merusk on April 28, 2011, 05:18:36 AM Don't get how? As in, "how did they get her," or, "why did they cast her?"
For the second, because she's hot and has geek attraction factor. For the first, all I can guess is she owed someone a favor. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: 01101010 on April 28, 2011, 06:19:57 AM Don't get how? As in, "how did they get her," or, "why did they cast her?" For the second, because she's hot and has geek attraction factor. For the first, all I can guess is she owed someone a favor. Or she hasn't really done anything in a long time... all about the bills man. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Merusk on April 28, 2011, 09:22:51 AM I'd offer that, but then I actually went and looked at IMDB. :oh_i_see:
She's a regular on "Body of Proof" was on "Leverage" for a while and prior to that was on "Shark" with James Woods. She was also in "O.C." and "Boston Public" with a few guest star appearance roles scattered throughout. Just because she's not playing sex vixen for geek mastrubation aid doesn't mean she hasn't worked. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: Cadaverine on May 29, 2011, 07:44:44 PM Episode 7: Scorpion and Sub-Zero Pt. 1 (http://youtu.be/O5Wnc8OyUj0)
Mostly dialogue, and they haven't put up Pt. 2 yet, so it's sorta meh. I liked the concept behind Episode 6, though. Title: Re: Mortal Kombat Post by: 01101010 on May 29, 2011, 08:06:23 PM This series is taking a huge step away from what was put out in the trailer link on the first page. I am hoping this is just back story and it catches up to that, or else I may rage.
