Title: F.E.A.R. (the first one, plus expansions) - $10 Post by: Azazel on May 21, 2010, 04:17:38 PM Worth it? I'm not sure. I haven't played it properly yet. I have them on disc in any case, but just letting y'all know.

Title: Re: F.E.A.R. (the first one, plus expansions) - $10 Post by: Mosesandstick on May 21, 2010, 04:36:19 PM I thought it was awesome when I played it, but fpses imho don't always age that gracefully.
Title: Re: F.E.A.R. (the first one, plus expansions) - $10 Post by: Malakili on May 21, 2010, 06:27:49 PM I paid 20 bucks a year or two ago and felt like it was worth it at the time, I think 10 is surely worth it if you are in the mood for a single player FPS.
Title: Re: F.E.A.R. (the first one, plus expansions) - $10 Post by: Yegolev on May 24, 2010, 02:29:19 PM I seem to have some sort of "issue" preventing me from playing this on the 360. Maybe PC would be better.
Title: Re: F.E.A.R. (the first one, plus expansions) - $10 Post by: tgr on May 25, 2010, 12:21:39 AM If there ever was a game to buy for its atmosphere, this is it. I played Doom3 and FEAR at roughly the same time, and while Doom3 spooked me once or twice, it was in that good old shock-horror way of "dark room and OH BTW BOO SUDDEN DOOR OPENS", whereas FEAR was more of the game that would creep under your skin and seriously go to town. It was more like a game version of The Ring.
It is awesome. I want more. Title: Re: F.E.A.R. (the first one, plus expansions) - $10 Post by: Malakili on May 25, 2010, 07:58:36 AM It is awesome. I want more. Luckily FEAR 3 is coming later this year. Title: Re: F.E.A.R. (the first one, plus expansions) - $10 Post by: Teleku on May 25, 2010, 12:01:42 PM Got this deal, been enjoying FEAR. The atmosphere certainly is really damn creepy. As TGR noted, much better than Doom 3, since that game just consisted of every fucking wall really being a hidden door that opens up when you walk by, letting a monster out. Wasn't really scary as it was annoying. The shit with the random "unknown" comlink whispering to you, while some scary little girl just walks in front of you down a hallway, is much more freaky.
Combat is actually pretty nifty as well. The soldiers you fight are a lot smarter than your average FPS fare, and just running into a room guns a blazing is a good way to get yourself 3 shotted. How is the sequel? Tempted to pick it up now since I've been enjoying this one. Title: Re: F.E.A.R. Not as good as the original in my opinion, but maybe worth it if you are really into FEAR 1 and can get a good deal on it. Title: Re: F.E.A.R. (the first one, plus expansions) - $10 Post by: Shrike on May 28, 2010, 09:40:54 AM Picked it up the night before last. Pretty impressive for a five year old game. The enemy AI is all that. They're a damned nuisance to deal with, and if you do something stupid, they WILL exploit it (and you'll probably be reloading a save...). It drips atmosphere. The scene with Alma cruising down a hallway towards you, igniting everything around her...that's a real "holy shit!" moment. I remember the reviews touting the lighting and sound in this game, and it is one of the things that stand out. Particularly impressive on my present machine.
I never played it back when (box wasn't really up to it). For $10, though, it's a no brainer if you've never seen it before. Title: Re: F.E.A.R. Title: Re: F.E.A.R. (the first one, plus expansions) - $10 Post by: Azazel on May 28, 2010, 05:08:21 PM well, the third one is sadly titled:
F3AR I guess part 4 will be FE4R? :oh_i_see: Title: Re: F.E.A.R. (the first one, plus expansions) - $10 Post by: tgr on May 28, 2010, 05:32:11 PM Could be worse. FEAR 3: Fear Harder
Title: Re: F.E.A.R. (the first one, plus expansions) - $10 Post by: Engels on May 29, 2010, 11:34:37 AM Picked this up. I'm enjoying it. Some things are outdated, but some things are as good if not better than most current FPS with a storyline. For one, the AI is actually a challenge. Secondly, they do storyline right -- show, don't tell.
I noticed that it came with two expansions (Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate). I imagine that those are just more story rather than massive improvements to the original. Anyone know? Title: Re: F.E.A.R. (the first one, plus expansions) - $10 Post by: Mosesandstick on May 30, 2010, 06:10:04 AM If I remember correctly they were just a bit more story, and from different viewpoints (or was that Fear 2? :uhrr:)
Title: Re: F.E.A.R. (the first one, plus expansions) - $10 Post by: Mazakiel on May 31, 2010, 11:24:33 AM The expansions further the story from the ending of the first game, but I've read that they were done by third parties and aren't considered in-continuity for the setting. Fear 2 has aspects from a different viewpoint as well as continuing from the ending of Fear 1.
Title: Re: F.E.A.R. (the first one, plus expansions) - $10 Post by: Azazel on June 01, 2010, 01:24:31 AM Pretty much correct.
FEAR 1 was developed by Monolith/Published by Vivendi, who owned the IP. After FEAR 1 did well, Vivendi got Timegate to do the two expansions. Monolith split with Vivendi, but retained the IP to FEAR, but not the name FEAR. They decided to ignore the 2 expacks in the canon for their sequel, and after a competition to come up with an alternative title for the sequel (won by "Project Origin",) they eventually worked something out with Vivendi and got the name back, so "Project Origin" became the subtitle for "FEAR 2: Project Origin". Title: Re: F.E.A.R. (the first one, plus expansions) - $10 Post by: Engels on June 01, 2010, 09:38:06 AM Cool, thanks for the info. I'm still playing this sporadically. To be honest, its a very 'rich' game. I'm happy to play it for about an hour, then put it down. Some of the toughest FPS single player game play I've ever encountered, but not frustrating. Each time I reload I do a bit better, and I don't feel I have to resort to cheesy geometry exploits to get through. It feels rather natural.
Title: Re: F.E.A.R. (the first one, plus expansions) - $10 Post by: Teleku on June 03, 2010, 09:07:38 AM Yeah, if anything, the AI in this game makes it fun. I'm in the later levels and its getting quite challenging in some area's.

I've just finished played FEAR2 the same way on the PS3 - an hour here and there, over a few weeks. Not as good as the first one in terms of atmosphere but I think that's because I knew what was going on this time. When I played the first one I didn't have a clue what was happening and I allowed myself to get totally freaked out by it  |
