Title: Infinity Universe Post by: tgr on May 07, 2010, 05:18:50 AM Searched for infinity, only thing I could find was infinity online, which wasn't a space game. I know it's been mentioned a few times on this forum before, but I'm not seeing a thread specifically to it.
I just noticed they've got a new video up, and I'm suddenly enthused and optimistic about the game. It even looks like you might have some elite-like controls. http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=113&Itemid=93 Still quietly hoping this'll be a fun game, but I'm left wondering what it'll actually play like. If it's to take players away from, say, EVE, it'll probably have to have large-scale fights etc going on. I also wonder if they'll dare make it as cutthroat as EVE currently is. Title: Re: Infinity Universe Post by: ajax34i on May 07, 2010, 06:52:48 AM That video looks amazing (it's been linked on the EVE-Online forums recently), but that looks like an engine demo more than a game at this point. I love the seamless transitions and what happens when he goes through the planet's rings, but his spaceship model sucks, and there's no talk of gameplay at all.

This has been my impression of Ininity as well. Its one of those things that I really want to turn out awesome, but I'm worried it'll end up being a great bit of tech with very little actual game to back it up. Title: Re: Infinity Universe Post by: tgr on May 07, 2010, 07:41:25 AM My impression is that it seems to be a 1-4 person strong team, which is done part-time, so if they had more people and could do this full-time, then things would probably look better.
I didn't think the model looked that bad myself, though. I'm more worried about the gameplay, since that's what I'll care more about if I try to play the game. They have talked about some sort of economic market as well, so I'm desperately hoping they'll get to that at some point, because I do want EVE to have a viable competitor. Even if just to get them to step up their game and fix things. Title: Re: Infinity Universe Post by: Stormwaltz on May 07, 2010, 08:11:19 AM I've been watching Infinity for 3-4 years now. It started as one guy's pet engine project that he worked on nights and weekends. That attracted a large number of volunteer artists who designed and modeled spacecraft. At some point the site started talking about being an MMORPG.
AFAIK, the engine is still just one guy. Title: Re: Infinity Universe Post by: Vaiti on May 07, 2010, 08:54:49 AM Not sure, but this might be the game I keep checking up on every now and then. There have been a couple space games like this floating around that have alot of promise but then go into blackouts of information and either die or suddenly spring to life again.
If this is the one where the community contributed a massive number of models. it may very well be the one I thought had the most promise. Unfortunately the naming schemes of these games all kind of blend together so I can't really tell. If this is the one tho, didn't they have some tech demo combat client awhile back that was pretty....crap. Watching the video it looks pretty nice. A couple times I was hoping for some things to happen. When he was moving around the station, I was hoping the stations docking bay would open and he would manually dock. When he was flying over the station and asteroid, I was hoping he would land on it. Title: Re: Infinity Universe Post by: TripleDES on May 10, 2010, 03:21:08 AM I doubt this'll ever become a MMO, not without outside help, like a dev studio hiring him.
If at all, he should use his genius to figure out an algorithm that can create diverse alien flora and fauna, and just create a pwetty Nocsis. Title: Re: Infinity Universe Post by: tgr on May 10, 2010, 03:34:38 AM Honestly, I wouldn't mind if it became a singleplayer x3/elite clone either. Just fly around and create my own little production empire, explore a bit, etc.
Kind of like what I'm doing in EVE right now, only I'd be able to fix lag etc myself by upgrading my own hardware. Title: Re: Infinity Universe Post by: TripleDES on March 11, 2011, 11:36:57 AM Turns out that guy finally saw reason and wants to stop it being a freelance one man show.

Title: Re: Infinity Universe Post by: tgr on March 11, 2011, 03:19:48 PM Cautionary squee.
Title: Re: Infinity Universe Post by: raydeen on March 15, 2011, 04:11:13 PM I wouldn't even care about multiplayer. If this was made into a modern version of Starflight, oh man...I'd never leave the house again.
