I'd guess Jakonovski's quip was riding on the notion that Bungie sold out consciously, with full intention of jumping ship afterwards.

The situation is not as dramatic as that. They didn't actually sell the company, it's only a publishing deal. Bungie remains independent and retains the rights to its intellectual properties. Still, given the whole Infinity Ward hoopla of unpaid royalties, this is a hell of a time to partner up with Activison.

This situation is tailored made for any of the "This will end well" (de)motivator pics - any one of them will do.

I look forward to the game about that guy you saw for half a second in the original halo.

It's just a publishing deal for a new franchise Bungie is doing.

This deal likely helped the whole decision-making process with Infinity Ward. These publishing deals don't happen overnight.

Publishers can be evil. Activision IS evil.

I think to them it's just business without ethics.

That doesn't even sound remotely plausible.  Likely the only connection any of this has with the IW situation is that right Activison needed to make a big deal out of this announcement to try to counter all the negative attention they've been getting in the press lately.

The reality is that they haven't bought Bungie.  Bungie is still independent and is not even tied exclusively to Activison for publishing.  All this deal entails as far as anyone can tell is the publishing rights to one franchise for 10 years for a series that Bungie apparently wants to make multiplatform (and thus it wouldn't make sense to publish through MS).

Besides that, Bungie has been riding the Halo train for almost a decade.  It remains to be seen if their upcoming non-Halo stuff will gain the same kind of popularity (unless it's just a reskinned Halo under a different name).  I loved a lot of their earlier stuff (Myth in particular), but I'm just not convinced they're going to find the same level of commercial success post-Halo that they've had the past 9 years or so.

So pretty much the whole announcement here is "Activision to publish one new Bungie franchise that could potentially be a big success or a commercial disappointment, who the fuck knows".

It's also possible that Bungie used all the negative Activision publicity to get a better publishing deal than they would otherwise have gotten.

I don't think Bungie really wants to remake Halo - a title that had some innovations, but was also hugely helped by being the decent title that Xbox needed.

Also, I think I preferred the Halo that appeared in the original videos of the game, not the final version. But anyway...

It's Bungie, they've got a pretty good track record, so we'll see.
