To Whom It May Concern:
Re: Launch of New Portable Game Machine

Nintendo Co., Ltd. (Minami-ward of Kyoto-city, President Satoru Iwata) will launch "Nintendo 3DS"(temp) during the fiscal year ending March 2011, on which games can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses.

"Nintendo 3DS"(temp) is going to be the new portable game machine to succeed "Nintendo DS series", whose cumulative consolidated sales from Nintendo amounted to 125million units as of the end of December 2009, and will include backward compatibility so that the software for Nintendo DS series, including the ones for Nintendo DSi, can also be enjoyed.

We are planning to announce additional details at E3 show, which is scheduled to be held from June 15, 2010 at Los Angeles in the U.S.

Somebody needs to explain to me how 3D will work without glasses and without a yet-to-be-invented 3 dimensional display device.  And when coming from Nintendo, it just reeks of gimmick.

You can have 3D without glasses if you know the location people are at.  Intel had a demo at CES that had glasses-free 3D at eight predetermined spots (Engadget story (http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/10/intel-shows-off-glasses-free-3d-demo-now-this-is-more-like-it/)).

Considering you're almost always going to be dead center on the screen for your portable system, this seems like a good fit.

Can you see the pictures in the mall where you have to relax your eyes?  If not, you're screwed.

I've seen some demos of small LCD displays (3-4") using a similar technique and it does work, though I think it's a bit gimmicky, and suspect that long term use would give me headaches.

I can see them, but you can't be serious...they're using the "cross your eyes and look into a point in the distance" method?  Lulz!

I'd imagine that they're using tech similar to that used in certain high-end phones in Japan (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2009/03/04/financial/f092751S15.DTL) which basically 'polarize' the display itself to allow for stereoscopic imaging without glasses.

It is indeed a challenge.

Worlds worst case of motion sickness in cars. Kids across the country are going to be vomiting in Taurus'

Funnily enough, this is the opposite of innovation. I might not have liked the Wii (at all) or the DS (for the most part), chucking 3D onto a portable system just strikes me as incredibly lazy in terms of advancement. Particularly given the size of the screens and their resolution and how far you are from it. /shrug

I don't think I even have the ability to see them, I have one bad eye. Certainly I've never been able to get one to work so far. (Need a smiley with an eyepatch.)

I think red/green color blindness might not help with those.  I can't imagine being able to play a "3D" handheld in any situation where I might normally play one.  It'd probably make me ill just playing while sitting on the couch.

To get an idea, you can place your DS on your face horizontally, one screen over each eye.  A couple rubber bands should hold it in place, then boot up Elite Beat Agents.  If you don't vomit, you can be assured you are ready for the next generation of games.

I've seen 'non-glasses' 3D in the form of a volumetric display (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volumetric_display), but they use multiple transparent display layers to create the 3D effect. This does not look deep enough to support that technology, but it does exist.

It's probably a cheap version of that using multiple polarized layers.  If that's the case, it might still work by giving the illusion of depth rather than an off-set image.

Woo, it'd be totally useless to me since I'm profoundly blind in my right eye.

Get this man a suit and a highback chair. There's money to be made here!

NECRO PRICE DROP!

That's kind of a big drop if ya ask me...

Thank you so much for posting this.  Was in the shop just ten minutes ago pricing them out to pick one up tomorrow.  Guess I'll wait 'till the price drop filters out here to the hinterlands.

This is a rather tempting price for the headache machine. Maybe I can work a 3DS into my birthday plans.

Honestly they had to do something; the system wasn't selling, and with the Vita (which blows it away in terms of power) coming this holiday at the same price point, Nintendo was in a bad spot. Coming down to $170 puts it in line with what parents are used to paying for the previous versions of the DS.

Someone remind me why my DS Lite now sucks?

Megaman Legends 3 got shitcanned so the only game I want to play for the 3DS is the Professor Layton/Phoenix Wright thing. I dunno if I feel like paying even $170 for the privilege.

I am not a fan of 3D in its current implementation across media platforms.

I sure as hell won't be touching this unless it drops to 50 used or something.   The DS was a huge let down compared to the PSP.   Based on how this goes I just need to wait till a year or so after the Vita drops to 150 and then it'll finally have decent games.

As tempting as this is I would wait until next year for the inevitable 3DS Lite with better battery life and a nicer design.

Seriously.  The PSP is better hardware but the games weren't there.  Anyway how excited can I get about playing God of War on a handheld?

$170 is pretty damn tempting.  But I too am leery of its battery life.  If I had confidence that Nintendo would release a higher capacity battery that I could just pop into an existing 3DS, I'd go for the purchase, but if history is any measure it's going to be a complete redesign of the system to improve the battery.

Understand that Nintendo's El Presidente took a 50% pay cut in order for this price drop to happen.  That's about $2 million dollars a year.

Modern day version of seppuku?  :why_so_serious:

Would lower sales have anything to do with the 3DS and it's auto-firmware-flashing to defeat the various R4 carts? I read an article in a mag at one stage that suggested tht Ninty had sole more DS units than DS games..

I guess I should of said "for me" when I said it was a let down.   I'm fully aware it's the reverse for others.  I only want my portables to do classic style RPG's and I don't like Dragon Quest or Zelda.   For me though the PSP had Star Ocean remakes,  Lunar Star with fancy graphics, R-Type Command and etc.     I actually didn't care about the hardware beyond the screen.   The PSP just flat out had better games for my particular interests.

Look at the bullshit about the Wii RPG's coming to the US and I am most certainly not crazy for avoiding another Nintendo product.
