I'm looking to get a driving game for the PC and was hoping that you game junkies could give me a few recommendations.  I prefer realism and solid physics with some sort of career mode.  I prefer skill driving (GP or Rally) over NASCAR. Any insight would help a great deal.  

On a side note, anyone here play ReVolt?  I used to love that stupid game.

TOCA Race Driver is pretty good.
Colin Mcrae 05 if you don't mind pure rally racing.

I hear FlatOut is supposed to be good.

If you're into F1, Grand Prix 4 is really good. Although the rosters are outdated for most stables.

For the PC, I'd say that TOCA Race Driver 2 is the best I've tried.

Thank you for the input.  I'll take a look at TOCA and McCrae.  I love rally racing so may go in that direction unless there are some serious issues with the game.

Track Mania.  EBgames has it for 10 bucks.

Its a racegame!  Its a puzzle game!  Its a stuntcar game!  Its a construction set!  Its all of the above.  Very cool fun arcade racecar game.

My take on it was that he wants stuff with crazy turns and such, as opposed to oval tracks.

Though I will say that EA's NASCAR 2005 on PS2 is quite good. Once you start getting a feel for the car, the racing itself begins taking on the skill and strategy of the real thing.

In other words, finding the ideal line, using the draft, blocking people from passing, pitting at the right times (and making the right adjustments), and keeping out of accidents for the entire race. It's a lot more than turning left.

Bear in mind I'm not a fan of NASCAR at all IRL, but the EA games have at least helped me appreciate it more as a sport. That, and I design my create-a-car precisely after my RL car, so it looks like I just drove onto the track by mistake.

Actually DV, I'm looking for a game that combines strategy, skill, and finesse.  I've considered the NASCAR games for much the same reasons that you've described and may break down and try one.  Overcoming the stereotypes is something I've also struggled with, but I can see the fun in NASCAR being all about quick decisions and tweaking performance.

Update: I decided to go with ColinMcRae 2005 and ordered it direct from Codemasters (like $26 with shipping... cheap imo).

I'll write up my reactions after a week with it... for any of you interested.

Loved it.  Looked good, too.  Even more fun once you started messing with the cars' easily-modified-in-.txt data files.

While I can't really speak for FlatOuts racetrack layout since I haven't played it myself ( only gotten good word of mouth ). I will say this, Formula 1 does not sport oval tracks. You're thinking of Cart.

Phenominal computer game addict I may be, there's two types of games I don't have a particular liking for: Sports games and Racing games.   Thus, my expertese does not work here, my apologies.

(There are exceptions, of course.  I liked Revolt too, though I never bought it.  Also, I think Cyberball (arcade) is the bees knees.)

I am guessing you don't play spelling bee games either =P

I think I had a kitten in the lap at the time, too much effort to cut and paste the thing into MS Word when I'm typing one handed as it is.

But yes, my spelling is worse than the breadth of my vocabulary.   I admit it, I have no pride.   Heck, I only just recently realized that it's spelled "whether" and not "wether".

1. Geldon, don't post in a thread in which you have no input. Also, I guarantee people are not going out of their way for your opinion on games. You like a vast amount of shit that other people don't like. You would call it more tolerant - others would call it terrible taste. It's the latter.

Gah, can't find supporting article online.  A couple months ago, teen was pulled over after running a red light.  Turns out he'd been distracted by the fact that he was playing Colin McRae Rally, on a laptop mounted next to the driver's seat.

Sounds like an excellent candidate for Darwin, except all he managed to get was a ticket.
