Title: Loony Lord Locates Lost Lunar Lander. Post by: Merusk on March 22, 2010, 04:15:32 PM Lord British, that is. (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=124956591&ps=cprs)
Quote "I am the world’s only private owner of an object on a celestial body," he says. The object he's referring to is the Lunokhod 2 rover. The Lunokhod 2 is a Russian space vehicle that landed on the moon in 1973 — and stopped working that same year. Even though no one knew exactly where the rover was, it went up for sale at a 1993 Sotheby’s auction in New York, and Garriott handed over $68,500 for it. In the article he implies that he's planning to go up and get a nice view from orbit around the moon. He hasn't burnt through his fortune yet? Cripes! Title: Re: Loony Lord Locates Lost Lunar Lander. Sure he made a nice bankroll off all those. Plus whatever he got from Tabula Rasa. Title: Re: Loony Lord Locates Lost Lunar Lander. Post by: K9 on March 23, 2010, 08:37:44 AM Who pays $70K for a box on the moon?
Oh right. Title: Re: Loony Lord Locates Lost Lunar Lander. Post by: ShenMolo on March 28, 2010, 04:05:16 AM What is his fortune from anyway? He can't be that rich off of Ultima can he? A few million $$ made during the 80's and 90's and invested well could be worth a shit ton now. Title: Re: Loony Lord Locates Lost Lunar Lander. Post by: NowhereMan on March 28, 2010, 04:24:02 AM Yeah but the dude bought himself a castle full of secret passages and shit. He really doesn't strike me as the savvy investor type unless ruffley shirts have catapulted in value.
Title: Re: Loony Lord Locates Lost Lunar Lander. Post by: Righ on March 29, 2010, 07:16:50 AM He's made (and lost) a lot of money investing in technical start-ups. Actually one of the things that I most admire about him is his willingness to risk money on high-risk ventures if they fuel his dreams. As with most risk investors, a lot of the ventures he's funded haven't panned out, but he survived the dot-com crash where many others didn't despite being heavily invested in such companies. He'll never make the kind of profits that canny financiers do, but he's also got more of a chance of being behind something really revolutionary.
If you consider that he's basically obsessed with helping bring space tourism to a wider (less wealthy) audience, buying museum pieces on the moon isn't quite so surprising. He may have no way to recoup anything from his purchase now, but he's part of a group of wide-eyed men who intend to try and make it possible. A loony (how apt) perhaps, but a charming loony nonetheless. Shame about his recent games. :ye_gods: Title: Re: Loony Lord Locates Lost Lunar Lander. Normally I'd applaud such things as this Moon-junk, but the way he does it is just wacked. It's the typical story of the nerd who knows not how to play well with others, although his heart is kinda in the right place. Errrr, maybe he's just a douche with dreams. |
