Suspiciously branded Square Enix, Fantasy Earth Zero (http://fez.gamepotusa.com/) is undergoing open beta. Interesting to notice the misleading attempt to make it pass for a real Final Fantasy title, the logo points hints to that too. Reality is, this game is four years old, and has been dropped by Squeenix a long time ago only to be brought back to life by Gamepot (?).

Seems interesting cause it's more action based than most MMORPGs (swing weapon with each left mouse button click) and more PvP-oriented, territories and keeps to conquer and hold.

I'm not sure if including the word "Fantasy" is really an attempt to trick people into it being a Final Fantasy title, given that I can name a whole bunch of games with Fantasy in the title.

Phantasy Earth was a long rumored sequel/spinoff to Phantasy Star, if anything that's what it should remind people of.

The art looks a LOT like FF Tactics.

Yeah, this.  I really can't believe they wont make a real god damn sequel (and Fuck that FFT bullshit game for the GBA).  I absolutely loved that game, and I know it has a big following.  Why the fuck wont they make a sequel and make lots of money!?!

I would imagine they, you know, like making bad games that make money rather than trying to make new iterations on old franchises that will be as bad as the bulk of their current stuff and actually let down fans. It's best for them to keep the myth going that, one time, they were the best of the best. World class dev house. Now all the talent is gone to like 6 other companies and they putter along with one mediocre team that happens to have incredible artists.

Fantasy Earth has been around for years. I played the original Japanese beta like 4 or 5 years ago. It was shut down and sold off if I remember correctly.

Did anyone actually play this? Their ad campaign they have going now is really annoying.

"NO DICE ROLLS! SKILL BASED GAMEPLAY, NOT FOR NOOBS!" or some such.

It went live about 3 days ago. I signed up, dl'd the client and have started the tutorial. Can't comment yet but when watching one of the Youtube gameplay vids, the poster commented that it was a lot like Savage 2 gameplay wise. I'm kind of inclined to agree. Third person shooter/fighter with some weird tactical and RTS elements. It's different enough that I'm giving it a look despite it's 'looks'.

That combat looks way less fluid than savage 2.
