Title: Q2 2010 Releases - Train Kept A-Rollin'
Post by: Velorath on March 15, 2010, 05:28:43 PM
Please note this time around clicking on each listed platform after the game's title will link you to the appropriate F13 Amazon store page.

Big releases keep coming further cementing my opinion that 2010 will go down as one of the best years in gaming ever.  This quarter we get a few familiar titles from threads past with some previously delayed games hopefully seeing release this time around, the Wii gets a few earlier than expected big releases, and May threatens to destroy us all.

PC releases seem a little thin so far, especially since Ubi gave the PC version of Splinter Cell a severe case of AIDS.  Starcraft 2 still has an outside shot at making it in at the end of the quarter.  If you're a PC only gamer, I hope you've got a decent backlog of games right now, or don't mind console ports.

Play-Asia link for the aussies at the top will obviously still work. Making single links there is a little more complicated though.

Red Dead Redemption really stood out to me when I started compiling pictures and trailers for this.  I found the first one fairly dull and hadn't really been following this one until I saw some recent screenshots.  Really looking forward to it now.

I'll probably also pick up Splinter Cell (360), 3D Dot Game Heroes, Split Second, Alan Wake, ModNation Racers, and Alpha Protocol, though probably not all right at release.

There were rumors a few months back that Red Dead is not faring well.  Supposedly it's been shifted around in Rockstar's development teams quite a bit and they are running into tech issues that are really hampering the game quality.  Again, I have no source, only rumor.  Take it for what you will.

Also, 3d Dot Game Heroes.  Wow, looking very fun.

I was ready to grab Alpha Protocol before and still am.  Aside from that it's not looking good, but I do have a hilariously large backlog (and much multiplayer to get on).

Thankfully this quarter is buttressed by Sakura Wars (31 March) and Persona 3 Portable (9 July) so I'll actually play something new and from a box on my all my consoles... except the 360.

That might be because the pictures are almost certainly bullshots. (And by "almost" I mean 99.99999%)

I had no idea a new Prince of Persia was coming out. Totally under the radar title.

I had managed to forget about most of those.  Now I am sure to do badly at my new job.  Also my penis tumped over my keyboard.

Prince of Persia's release is coinciding with the movie (although it's not a movie tie-in and takes place between Sands of Time and Warrior Within if I'm not mistaken).

I'm coming up dry. Red Dead Redemption is in my "wait for bargain bin" list, but I can't muster any interest in the rest.

I do appreciate you taking the time to make Amazon links, though. ^_^

My current interests lie in Distant Worlds (http://www.matrixgames.com/products/379/details/Distant.Worlds) and Mount & Blade: Warband.

hmm...

In the "wait for later when it's cheap" category: (along with things like Bayonetta, GoW3, AVP, Darksiders, etc)
Splinter Cell
Prince of Persia
Red Dead Redemption

Maebey Bluth:
SSF4
Dot Game Heroes
Split Second
Alan Wake
Lost Planet 2
Blur
UFC 2010

WTF is:
Nier
Alpha Protocol

Nothing I need to get on anything approaching Day 1.

BF:BC2 pwns me at the moment with it's tantalising blend of fast rounds (like potato chips, you can have a few quick and easily), skinner-box persistance/rewards, and, of course, shooting people in the face point blank with an automatic shotgun.

Red Dead Redemption has me intrigued.

The screenshots for a lot of this just look terrible.   Not anything that screams "minute 1" to me, but a lot that looks to be worth buying.

If they're good (reviews or word of mouth here) I'll probably pick up:

Splinter Cell: Conviction (would be the first time I bought a non-budget SC)
Metroid: Other M
3D Dot Heroes
Alan Wake

Skate 2 makes me wary of Skate 3.  2 wasn't much an improvement over 1.  Adding more fucking hard to do tricks with more challenges that are nigh impossible doesn't appeal to me (was some asshole really pining for finger flips?).  They need to make the city more fun to skate around, not more of a pain in the ass.

Mario Galaxy 2 will likely be entertaining, before the last level makes me realize just how bad I am at 3D platformers.  Needs to have a new wrinkle if it's going to be worth playing.

UFC will depend on word of mouth here.  Slow as hell menus, tedium between fights, and a still pain-in-the-ass sub system (never managed a single sub in hundreds of fights) means I'll likely skip.

Still need to pick up GoW3, but to be honest 2 annoyed me in parts and I had to force myself to finish.  I still think they're great games, but one grabbed me a lot more than 2 did.

Alpha Protocol and Nier look like amateur hour.

Agree 100%. I liked GOW1 a lot but halfway through two the formula was already wearing thin. Once the experience starts to wear off a little the core gameplay is revealed as not terribly interesting.

I'm curious to see how Monster Hunter does.

Sin and Punishment could be the best game on that list.

I liked 2. I'll catch up to 3 eventually. Probably said this a hundred times already, but I thought DMC3 was better than GOW1/2 anyways. I kinda prefer more the arcade like take on this type of game. That just leads me to believe I already have the better game in Bayonetta. Makes me want to hold off and save my money for now. [edit] Also, and unfortunately, GOW's formula has plenty of imitators now. Some good too.. but it kind of slowly burns you out on the experience. On the flipside, nobody has tried imitating Kamiya's philosophy exactly. And enough people seem to hate his games on site that I don't have worry about them being imitated either.

Alpha Protocol and Nier look like amateur hour.

Nier I was actually tempted to leave off the list.  Alpha Protocol was hard to find good screenshots for.  Only a handful of screenshots the websites have are recent, with the rest being from August or earlier.  Of course the most recent trailer (which I believe is the one I linked) doesn't look all that great either, so maybe the game is just bad.

I don't see any reason to believe that Alan Wake would be a hugely superior experience on the PC.  Certainly not to the point where it would make sense to wait for a PC version whose current status is "canceled" unless your goal is just to refrain from using your 360 as long as possible.

Post by: stray on March 17, 2010, 02:04:11 AM
I don't get the recent 360 hate I've been hearing. Here I am, supposed PS3 fanboi, who bought one recently.. and now I see people in this forum, as well as people I know, ditching theirs. I think it loses on the game selection in the end, but it's still pretty cool. Also, they have their shit together on Live enough that it may very well be tempting to get the new Xbox when it comes out over the PS4... but that's beside the point, I guess.

I also noticed Schild bought the shittier PS3 Bayonetta over the 360 one when it came out. Never mentioned it, but I was surprised by that. That's at least one recent excuse to use it...

The 360 just doesn't have enough to make it a must buy, which is almost the same for the PS3. Well, with the exception of Uncharted which is worth the cost of a Blu-Ray player.

I don't see any reason to believe that Alan Wake would be a hugely superior experience on the PC.  Certainly not to the point where it would make sense to wait for a PC version whose current status is "canceled" unless your goal is just to refrain from using your 360 as long as possible.

I think Schild was being facetious. MS just confirmed Alan Wake is canceled for PC citing "Some games are more suited for the intimacy of the PC, and others are best played from the couch in front of a larger TV screen", which is a load of shit. I prefer sitting at my desk playing games.

What happened to the PC version?

Remedy recently commented about the PC version saying (14/07/09):

"It is accurate that we are currently working exclusively on the Xbox360 version of Alan Wake. PC plans are currently open, and therefore it’s safe to say that at least a simultaneous launch with the Xbox version will not happen at this late stage. Remedy has a deep heritage in PC gaming and would love to see a PC version available to its PC followers, ultimately however this decision lies with our publisher."

360 exclusive? "with our publisher"?

fffffuuuuuuuuuu

Well, to be fair, it looks like the game might not be too badly geared towards the 360 controller, and if max payne is any indication, then I expect this game to be pretty damn good.

I'm still annoyed with the no PC option, but I suppose that's just to be expected with the way things are going.

YMMV.

I actually agree with MS on this one. I prefer sitting on my couch, playing games on my 60inch HDTV for a lot of games. Others I like sitting in front of my computer. Take a game like Heavy Rain. I can see no way this would be a better experience on a monitor than on a big screen TV.

On topic. Honestly not many of those games excite me. Splinter Cell, since I love the series (Insert Splinter Cell vs Metal Gear Solid argument here).  And maybe Lost Planet 2, for some coop, but doubtful.

I played Heavy Rain just fine on my 23" monitor.  I could play it on the TV downstairs, but it's lower res (720p to 1080p monitor) and I can use my headphones while playing.  My TV downstairs isn't mega-huge either.

I don't know why there'd be a SC v. MGS argument.  Sure there's sneakiness, but they're so fundamentally different as to make most comparisons ridiculous.

Just looking through some interviews and videos, Skate 3 is set in a new "skater" friendly city with none of the hostile security guards or rail capping bullshit from the previous title.  Apparently there is a skate park editor and a improved video tools.  Inching toward must buy.  Also there's a focus on "team" based skating for the online portion, which I don't give a fart about (some of the people that play this online really game the system hard, it's not fun playing with them).

I'll probably wait for the reviews.  Gamespot's review was pretty accurate and the negatives mentioned were the reasons I stopped playing.  Did have a decent amount of fun despite the shortcomings.

I always liked this "rivalry" :) I think the main difference is not the weirdness, but that Metal Gear is a criticism on warfare. And SC is more in the "celebrate" the military variety of games. I wouldn't say that is necessarily more realistic. I think it's more accurate to call SC a fantasy, and MG, behind all of it's whacky shit, is absurdist. Both are real in their own way, depending on who you are.

Enough of the philosophical bullshit though. MG is mainly different for having traditional boss battles.

Skate 2 is to Skate 1 what Tony Hawks Underground was to THPS4. These games don't need to go with gimmicks of "taking back the town". Just give us a good city to skate in, and lots of fun skating challenges.

Hmmm...Alpha Protocol is a must buy for me. I'm intrigued by the thought of an espionage RPG and I'm willing to look over less than spectacular graphics.

PS3 portable is also a must buy.

Alan Wake is a probably buy.

The rest? I'll pass.

RDR looks like a must-buy for me, but I'm a sucker for sandbox-style games.

Just like Q1, I'm probably looking at ~$4-500 out the door in the span of 3 months.  Alpha Protocol (despite the bigass delays and well...  Sega), SC:C, Alan Wake (I just have to see how horrible this ended up being), Skate 3, ModNation Racers, SSF4 and 3D Dot Game Heroes look like must-buys.  I'm really iffy on the new Prince of Persia if only because the last two weren't particularly good and they seem to be tying it to the release of the upcoming movie - never a good sign.

Not sure why you think Alan Wake will be horrible.  Seems like almost all the hands-on reactions that came out last month were pretty positive.  Story and character-wise, it seems like a number of people have compared it favorably to Twin Peaks, and most people have said the gameplay is pretty smooth as well.

I've never really gotten into the Prince of Persia games, but this new one is supposed to be closer to the first two games of the Sands of Time trilogy.  It's only a tie-in to the movie's release in that they wanted a new PoP game on shelves when the movie comes out.

They've had some flops, but for every Sonic, there's a VC, VF5, Bayonetta, Total War, and Condemned. Or maybe it's safe to say they're a good publisher... umm and still make good arcade games too.

Alpha Protocol sounds pretty cool, but I'd be slightly suspicious for it being Obsidian more than Sega.

Total War is not unanimously loved. There series has decayed over time, particularly in the areas of AI and quality control.

Okay, changed my mind about Mod Nation Racers after watching this.

I'm a sucker for a good construction set. Not a "day one" purchase, but I'd pay full price for it. Looks fun.

Very much so. Empire was a complete and utter flop. I won't buy Napoleon simply for that fact (and the fact they exist in almost the same period). Wake me when they get to WWI.

Added Disgaea Infinite for the PSP to the main list.  Arc Rise Fantasia for the Wii will probably get thrown in there at some point too.

I should probably just make a topic for Red Dead Redemption at some point since I'm really hyped up for it.  Even the multiplayer stuff looks really good (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/108/1082538p2.html).  I remember having a surprising amount of fun with some f13'ers in GTAIV (on the 360), so hopefully I'll see some of you in RDR as well (again, on 360).
