Title: Facebook Poker; Now With 100% more Richard Garriot
Post by: IainC on February 18, 2010, 03:14:47 AM
I'm not making this up (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98382-Richard-Garriott-is-Back-in-the-Game).

If thats the whole truth its just sad.

From world building to creative director for a poker game.

Or this could be a seed.

How is this in any way sad or surprising? World building is dead, creative people are a limited market and the mass market just wants to fuck with them, driving away the core audience of a world sim.

Meanwhile, facebook games are huge and every mouthbreather in the world thinks he's a poker shark.

After Tabula Rasa, I think this is the best place for him.

There's a good opportunity in getting into the market and becoming the defacto development platform, or at least a major player in it. Ultimately you get paid even if a title never launches because you're a third party supplier.

The HeroEngine springs to mind here - if Simultronics was just developing a MMO, they would have been dead long ago.

Plus: if I was Garriott, I wouldn't want to be back in front of a huge AAA title either.

He has zero to do with the game itself. He's more of a symbol of the studio than anything else. It is, in fact, a job I too would take. That is, if just by existing I created marketing and investment opportunities like he somehow does.

We found it pretty interesting that not only is the game in Torque, but he's also now distributing a plugin to play games in a browser. Hrm!

Interesting as in "Motherfucker didn't pay us for a dev copy?" or as in "Bitch needs to name-drop us?"

Holy crap, yeah. I just caught wind of this. I always thought Garriott would be perfect for small casual games, for the very reasons he cited. But what the hell, poker?

He says he wants to do more, but...poker?! I can whip up an Ultima game in like 30 minutes with Torque.

Once again, RG had little to nothing to actually do with it. Please stop saying otherwise.

Indeed. Nobody said otherwise.
