Title: Video Game Box Art
Post by: schild on January 11, 2005, 11:56:52 AM
I'm trying to make a relatively high-res library of video game box art that is fantastic. Here's the two that I have thus far:

Specifically, I'm looking for art that actually looks like art. Paintings and whatnot. Not stuff like Mario 3 or Mega Man 2.

Much of that series qualifies.

Man..memories. Don't ask me why, but Ultima V and Ultima Underworld were the most immersive games I have every played in my life.

And I still remember my first "game hacking"--we decoded the data files in Ultima II and gave ourselves massive stats!

Don't forget being a 5th-grade uberhacker! Sadly, the game was C&C and the hacked item was the ini. Ah the innocence of youth...

While those are all great games, a lot of the art itself is pretty pulpy.  I wouldn't let your love of the game drown your aesthetic sensibilities.

Pikmin.

The mindless masses you control with your little alien avatar who will  fight, die or explode as you command!  Fear my animal-vegetable army of doom, vile beetles!

It's a fantastic game for anyone who liked Lemmings.

Some kind of wierd plant aliens you up-pluck and get to follow you around in droves.  That about covers it.

I was going to try to post up some game boxes, but while looking at them it occured to me that (with few exceptions (http://archive.gamespy.com/top10/january03/covers/index.shtml)) they all boil down to some fairly nifty marketing statement or another.

It just now occured to you that game boxes were advertising?  Andy Warhol called, he said you don't get 15 minutes.

Not so much that the box cover is designed to sell the product so much as how the commercial meaning behind the art sort of robs it of it's artistic meaning.

I'm back in College, the rampant attack of knowledge on my sad sack of gray matter has made me a fruity socialist. It's probably just a phase.

This one is a personal favorite because not only did I get the artist to smile at me at my first PC convention ever, I spent countless hours playing this game in my younger years. Box art that harkens back to the day when CG was an avant garde artist's wet dream...

I tried to buy or rent that game like 10 times and failed to find it for sale anywhere :P   I like the box arts and the screenshots and the videos, though.

Re: Grim Fangdango, Out of This World, Adventure Construction Set: Ah, the memories.

I guess even in the old days they knew how to make a good box cover:
Mail Order Monsters (Nice, made it look like a letter.   How do you suppose they did that dino - dressed up a toy?)
Below The Root (Includes full color book illustration)

Not that modern game covers suck - in fact, they're sometimes even cooler than the game:
Kingdom Hearts - sappy wierd plot, awesome artistic style
(http://geldon.moviebbq.com/grieflink/1104252195-00.jpg)
Final Fantasy X - sappy wierd plot, awesome artistic style
(Yeah, I know, Squaresoft - easy pick for artistic style.)

Or sometimes, the art is only almost as cool as the game:
Einhander, a fitting cover for one of the best SMUPs ever.
Ring of  Red - fairly descriptive of the mood of the game.

I guess I'm over my "OMG, Game Box Covers are commercialized!" kick.
P.S. Mobygames is love except if you try to directly link their images then they kick you hard where you least desire it.

Righ still has an Amiga 500 sitting in the cupboard.  It has followed us across oceans.  It's not been out of it's box for at least 11 years.  I can't believe the sort of stuff he holds on to.  I'm the opposite.  Sometimes I throw things away while I'm still using them.  It's the Scandie in me, I think.

I still have this, although it's at my sister's house.  If it weren't, I would have tossed it a gazillion years ago.

Nope. Got rid of the A500 when the keyboard broke. I still have an A3000 and a bunch of other Amiga stuff. I use AmigaForever now. Emulation on a modern Mac or PC is faster than my A3000 with an MC68060 running at 75MHz. But I need the Amiga to read the floppies - PC controllers cannot be programmed to do so.

But, if you think that's bad... I have a CD32 too. If C= hadn't failed so dismally, more people might know that Zool was once the greatest platform game ever written.

Heh. "I have no mouth..." is the primordial storyline for pretty much all "machines take over the world" modern day stories. Terminator, Matrix, Lawnmower Man, pretty much anything that includes machines becoming intelligent and hating mankind are all derived from this short story. It's a sci-fi classic!

You can actually read the short story Here (http://www.scifi.com/scifiction/classics/classics_archive/ellison/ellison1.html).

The amazing thing about this story is that it was written in 1967.

I have no mouth.. is not exactly abandonware since Mr Ellison's site still sells it here (http://harlanellison.com/herc.htm#ihnm).

The abandonware rips allegedly are missing the movies that are required to play the game anyhow.

I did find the photo of Harlan and friend rather amusing. Presumably the young lady is a surviving Homo Floresiensis as Harlan himself is hardly altitudinous.
