Title: Shutter Island Post by: UnSub on February 13, 2010, 09:15:11 PM Seeing that this was being turned into a movie, I read the book recently.
Given that the film looks pretty close in appearance to the book (judging by the trailer (http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2010/feb/09/shutter-island-trailer-martin-scorsese), anyway) it really could go either way. Personally I thought the book had a suitable kick in the guts at the right places, but it could easily appear on screen as "Generic Crime Film #133234145". Solid cast though (although hopefully the right Ben Kingsley shows up). It will be. Scorsese is directing. It is my opinion that De Niro isnt that great of an actor and that the only reason that he reached the heights that he did was because Scorsese is a god among directors. Too often we see actors that do a shit job in a movie and we assume that they don't care or are mailing it in (see Ben Kingsley, Jeremy irons etc). I really think that this comes down to directing. Good directors make average and sometimes bad actors look good. This never seems to happen in the other direction. Scorsese is directing Shutter Island, it will be good. Title: Re: Shutter Island Post by: Margalis on February 19, 2010, 12:29:33 AM The marketing for this makes it impossible to tell what kind of movie it is, if I had to guess I would have guessed it was a J-Horror remake with DeNiro reprising his role as Frankenstein.
Title: Re: Shutter Island Post by: naum on February 19, 2010, 01:36:47 PM This review (http://movies.nytimes.com/2010/02/19/movies/19shutter.html) not so kind…
Quote Shutter Island’ takes place off the coast of Massachusetts in 1954. I’m sorry, that should be OFF THE COAST OF MASSACHUSETTS! IN 1954! since every detail and incident in the movie, however minor, is subjected to frantic, almost demented (and not always unenjoyable) amplification. The wail of strangled cellos accompanies shots of the titular island, a sinister, rain-lashed outcropping that is home to a mental hospital for the CRIMINALLY INSANE! The color scheme is lurid, and the camera movements telegraph anxiety. Nothing is at it seems. Something TERRIBLE is afoot. Sadly, that something turns out to be the movie itself. Title: Re: Shutter Island Post by: Mrbloodworth on March 05, 2010, 06:42:13 AM Watched this last night. I went in expecting a horror flick, but I got a mind fuck suspense flick, I wasn't disappointed. As far as the music, there is some very intentional pacing that I think that reviewer above seems to have missed.
Over all a good movie, not great, but worth the watch. Title: Re: Shutter Island Post by: Engels on March 06, 2010, 06:30:33 PM Saw this today. Not amazing, but not bad, like Mrbloodworth said.
Title: Re: Shutter Island Post by: Threash on July 15, 2010, 05:33:46 PM I just watched this and was incredibly disappointed that i was right in figuring out the twist just from watching the trailer.
Title: Re: Shutter Island Post by: schild on August 04, 2010, 08:14:27 AM I liked it. I especially liked Ben Kingsley explaining what just happened to the audience via whiteboard even if the twist was painfully obvious from minute -1.

Recently Netflixed this, just one thing bothered me: when Leo is interviewing the patients in the cafeteria type room and the twitchy woman who axed her husband gets her cup of water, why do we get the double-take moment of her miming drinking from an empty hand and then slamming down a spent glass? I couldn't see any purpose for it, and am puzzled. Title: Re: Shutter Island Post by: Ragnoros on April 04, 2011, 08:55:09 PM To mess with your head.
EDIT: Didn't want to bump the thread at the time, but I also enjoyed this movie. |
