I have never played Titan Quest, how does it stack up against Torchlight or Diablo 2?  Worth $5?

If you are looking for Diablo-style combat where you wade through piles of monsters that fill your screen TQ is not for you. If you just care about Diablo-style loot, it's decent.

Its pretty decent.  I played it a couple years back when I wanted to play Diablo 2 again, only to realize that I was sick as hell of Diablo 2.  My biggest issue was the game play just felt a bit slow for an ARPG.  Still, if you are bored of Torchlight and Diablo, and are in the mood for an ARPG, its not a bad choice.   For some reason I remember the skill system being a bit more interesting than Diablo, but I don't remember exactly how it worked.

Anyway, for 5 bucks, buy it.  I think I bought the Gold Edition for 20, and felt like it was worth it at the time.

I liked it, but I wasn't hung up on monster density.  It's about the loot to me, and TQ has it.  Lots of classes and skills.  Hitting cat women with a big hammer produces hilarious results.  I'd rate it above Dungeon Siege and Torchlight, and overall I feel TQ was underrated.  As for D2LoD, too much nostalgia gets in the way of direct comparisons... but I appreciate the modern graphics, comparable loot system and more classes.  In fact, you dual class in TQ.  Melee class with some health-absoprtion magic?  Sure.  I'd say it is easily worth $5 if the above appeals to you at all.

The cons are, as mentioned, fewer monsters on screen at once and the world is simply fucking huge so you get a sparse feel in places.  Maybe a plus, YMMV.

It's definitely worth the five bucks.  Make sure you start your character with the expansion game and not the original. The expansion includes the original campaign but adds in some new classes and storage and stuff like that.

Reasons I wont be buying it for $5 on Steam (I owned the cd's but its literally like a 4 disc install)

-Class balance was shit, ability balance was worse which means some class combos are way too easy to play some way too hard.
-The world was too bright, too empty and never had much atmosphere.

Reasons it is still worth $5 and I strongly considered it.

-Loot system is well done there is lots of loot.
-So many build options that just playing around with what you can do is great.
-Knockback is fucking lulz in this game, you can launch mobs so goddamn far its amazing.

Will this run on Windows 7 64bit in widescreen?

I seem to also remember the game dropping a *lot* of loot but limited inventory space and the vast majority of it being crappy made sorting through it onerous rather than fun. I never finished the game. That said, it was probably less boring than dungeon siege.

I don't think it's as "good" as Torchlight, but it's a different enough game that it's worth having around if you need that type of itch scratched and you don't want to head back into Torchlight.

Definitely check out the Titan Quest forum in Graveyard (http://forums.f13.net/index.php?board=61.0) since all the comments about class balance are spot on.


Widescreen, except for 1280x720 for whatever reason (http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/wiki/Titan_Quest#Known_Issues), should work fine.

On the W7 x64 front, most Google results came back pretty clean.

Agree on much of this. I enjoyed it more than what I played of Torchlight. (finished TQ on all but the final difficulty, and that playthrough got paused since the 2.5 runsthrough were sequential). Direct comparisons to D2 don't work, because of the years in between but today, I'd rather play TQ than D2. LAN and online MP is also a bonus.

What Hoax says about class balance may be true to an extent, but I enjoyed being able to dual-class and play around with the depth. If that means that they're not all exactly "equal" then /shrug. Note I played this with 3 friends LAN style, which obviously changes the game a lot.

Really though, it's $5. So if you like these games, just buy it. (I may have found Torchlight to be over-hyped here, but it's still very worth the $5 I paid for it. - TQ will be at least the same.)

As far as class balance goes just remember multipliers will always be more powerful than straight up bonuses and you'll be fine.  I liked TQ very much, but i liked having my handy chart with every classes ability and skills that came with the box.

I paid for 40 bucks (Aussie) for TQ a few ears ago. I loved it and then got over it. I'd argue it has better longevity than Torchlight but Torchlight was great fun too. At 5 bucks, get it and don't even think twice, it's aged pretty damn well :)

No, the notion of class balance among classes that weren't all built at the same time is retarded. There's a certain mindset you need to go into something with when you want any modicum of class balance. Most developers never get anywhere near that sort of thought-vacuum you need to be in at any stage of design.

Edit: That said, perfectly balanced classes would make for a pretty boring game.

I felt like I was on rails when I played it. If the maps were randomly generated they certainly all felt the same. Loot part was kinda fun now. My brother bought this on Steam and was asking if I had heard of it  :awesome_for_real:


Maybe I will dig out my copy and play along with him for grins.

Non-random maps worked well for the game that TQ actually is.
