Title: Che
Post by: stray on February 01, 2010, 10:26:32 PM
Pretty compelling movie (technically, 2 movies) once you get over the how long it's gonna be. They move rather quickly though. Anyone else watch them yet?

I'm puzzled why Soderbergh went to these lengths to tell Guevara's story this extensively though. No one makes movies like this -- even when they care deeply about a given subject.

I will add that I ran into a cool quote by Satre, who said that Che was "the most complete man of our age". So yeah.. It's probably true.

I'm not a communist, but I can't but help admire the man - for being just that. A man. It's all about the mancrush for me. I have few worthwhile ideals; I am not a medical doctor; or a cross continental motorcyclist; nor do I have the balls to be a revolutionary; I've not written any political books; I haven't honed my combat skills like a Green Beret, and then actually used them on my enemies; haven't managed to father..umm..5 kids; haven't made a fiery speech at the UN; nor have I put myself in the most dire situations -- and not run like a pussy. Gotta admire anyone who does all this shit in one lifetime.

The first film btw is more about the Cuban revolution than it is Che. The second is Bolivia.

[edit] Wtf was up with the 60's anyways? How could be so many badass motherfuckers just completely fail...?

I Tivo'ed it over the Christmas break and have just now started to watch it. Little bit under two hours into it and I love it. I wish I had the time to watch it all at once, or that it had come in HD, but it's definitely worth watching.

I've been waiting for the Criterion Collection Blu-Ray to come out, and have some time to put aside to watch the entire thing.

So far I have not been lucky.

If you haven't yet, check out  Diarios de Motocicleta (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0318462/), from 2004, Directed by Walter Salles. One of my favorite films of the decade.

Yeah, that's a great movie. Probably would recommend watching the Motorcycle Diaries before this.

Now if only every interesting figure in history got a good 3 movie treatment like that...

I thought it only bordered into made for TV drama on the very rare occasion, which is a lot more can be said for Walk The Line, Ray and a lot of other famous person biopics. I found the last film grindingly slow but it was unmissable edge of your seat stuff anyway. Having Del Toro as Che helped, he was born to play that role.

But isn't the whole problem that you had a complete murderer before that, with Batista torturing and killing from 2000 to 20000 people as well? Plus he stole 40 million dollors from the Cuban people when he fled, while Che only got pocket change for a ticket to Congo.

Fucked if you do, fucked if you don't I guess.
