Title: Scientific American: RMT as a beneficial, growing employer
Post by: UnSub on January 17, 2010, 10:01:32 PM
Okay, that's not really what the article is about - it's a pretty good overview of the history of RMT / external microtrans in MMOs - but it is part of its conclusions. (http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=real-money-from-virtual-worlds)

RMT companies (according to the article) pay as well if not better than some other menial jobs and if the option is gold farming or unemployment, people choose gold farming. Add a swelling pool from which to employ plus increases in demand for RMT options and it certainly appears that RMT is a growth industry that (again, according to the article) might not be all bad although ethically questionable.

I hear lots of otherwise unemployed people sell crack on street corners and make good money.

Are we really comparing being payed to play a video game to selling crack?   :oh_i_see:

Better comparison is telemarketing, IMO.

If you believe Blizzard (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/basics/antigold.html), a big chunk of RMT gold moving around now is actually gold stolen from hacked accounts; only some from the stereotypical chinese nerd farming CASH_MOB_004 from a basement sweatshop in Shenzhen.

So yeah, theres good money burglarizing and/or fencing stolen goods compared to being unemployed.

What's really interesting is that Scientific American is doing this article. It's mainstream.

Virtual economies also popped up in a pretty mainstream advertising-oriented website (http://www.warc.com/ArticleCenter/Default.asp?CType=A&AID=WORDSEARCH90974&Tab=A).

It's an area that is attracting growing attention.
