Meh.

Visually shocking and delightful, overflowing with whimsy, impeccably well cast and almost totally soulless. For all it harps on the importance of dreams and stories, its own story goes nowhere and every dream proves quite shallow. It haltingly stumbles its way to a disorienting, pointless conclusion... as brilliant and amusing as one of John Cleese's silly walks, and just as bereft of either point or punchline.

If you are as much of a fan of Gilliam as I am, see it on the big screen, but catch a bargain matinee. The man really needs to stop writing his own movies.

Funny thing is, that review you just wrote almost perfectly describes Baron Munchaussen - which is pretty much the type of movie I was expecting when I first heard about this.

I didn't realize it was one of his.  Now that I know this I will go see it in the theater.

We were comparing the two films in an after-movie conversation, and came to the conclusion that what Imaginarium was missing is the little girl, grounded in reality, who kept saying "Yes this is all over whimsical and charming but there is a PLOT we must get BACK TO." The characters who might say that in this film are just as dizzy and distracted as the good doctor.

There was also the hurdle of Heath ledger dieing halfway though shooting, to the resolve of three (not no name) actors filling his role.

"Rated PG-13 for violent images, some sensuality, language and smoking."

Anyone know what the "Violent images" are and what degree they are violent or bloody?

Are you going to do this for every movie? FFS, if your girlfriend can't handle PG-13, just rent a Pixar movie or something.

Um, PG-13 seems to be the R of 3 years ago. So, thats not really a guide anymore. Fuck, have you seen what they put on prime time TV now?

Nothing wrong with asking those that have seen it questions, especially if you are considering going to see them.

There is nothing gory or outrageous about the violence. Almost no blood. I don't recommend rushing out to see the movie for entirely other reasons, already discussed.

This movie, was absolutely awesome.

This isn't as bad as some in this thread have said. Would have been a whole lot better if Heath had done it all, though.

I would have liked for heath to have made it through the whole thing but honestly the way it worked out worked fine for the film. I enjoyed this film quite a bit it was good fun.

Im irrational about Gilliam.  I'll see anything he does.  This should be seen, but not his best.  That said, incredible recovery from such a sad disaster.

I caught this on the plane.  pxib's review in the first post is right on the money IMO.  It was very pretty and I wanted to like it, but the story made no sense whatsoever
(edit: even on the Terry Gilliam scale) and that was a bit of a turn-off.

Well, I mostly agree too. It's very much a "here and now" story but still a pretty great kind of weirdness.

Of all the wild (wild!) images the film gives us, the one that sticks with me the most is probably the cheapest: That horse drawn renaissance-era theatre wagon ambling through modern London. I think Gilliam is one of those guys who's inspired by limitations. He needs more sets and models and less CG.
