Title: War For Cybertron
Post by: Ratman_tf on December 21, 2009, 07:13:45 PM
I am sorta looking forward to this.

http://www.gametrailers.com/game/transformers-war-for-cybertron/12451

Set entirely on Cybertron, and outside of any continuity, so they're not stuck with the Bayformers look/story.

Cool video is cool.

And now, of course, we'll think back to all the good Transformers games there have been.

....

Right.

Cue Schild.

I've heard good things from people playing the multiplayer beta thing.

Looks like vapid and mindless transforming fun.  You know, Console Fodder.  Much like Judge Dredd for the PC was.

I may play it.  I do like transforming into a truck and hitting someone with my radiator.

If anyone actually picks this up, or plans to, can you throw me a little info as to how it plays ?

Still interested in it for Inner Child sake, but don't want to waste my time if it's shit.  So far the only complaint from people seems to be that the vehicle modes are fairly unexciting to control.  I would expect the Multiplayer to be the real draw though.

IGN gave it a 9.0 and said the multiplayer was very good as was the single player and mentioned it even has a co-op mode.

Ditto. It looks like fun, but it could so easily not be.

I've done the first couple of levels now (co-op with my brother) and a bit of the Escalation mode, and aside from a slightly annoying second chapter boss fight (it's very pattern-based and basically 1 or 2 shots you while you're learning the pattern), it's been pretty fun.  With the ground-based Transformers, it plays sort of like Gears of War + a bit of Halo minus the GoW cover system.  The second campaign level introduced jet-based Transformers, and they're a lot more fun if you're willing to spend a bit of time getting used to switching to jet form to dash between places to hide.  Regardless of which type you're using, you can transform at any time, but the jets make doing so much more rewarding/fun - you can place yourself anywhere on the battlefield almost instantly.  There's also something about going from flying full-tilt and then transforming to drop in the middle of a fight with your space-shotgun that's just great.

If you are or were a fan of the original TV show or the comics, this game was obviously made by people that enjoy the source material - the voice acting is pretty solid so far (though they apparently couldn't get the original Starscream actor), and the writing is very consistent with what fans of the TV show/comics and 1986 movie know.  The character designs retain elements of the G1 character designs (particularly in the heads), while being very much new and fresh looking.  Similarly, the environment design retains the sensibilities of the show as well, recalling the imagery of the source material - there's lots of detail in the technical-looking spires and it all looks blasted to hell.

Bonus:  The starship that the Decepticons are in during the opening cutscene is almost a dead-ringer for the ship they would later chase the Autobots to Earth in.

If you're playing it on 360, I highly recommend the optional full install to HDD - texture pop is much more noticeable when the game has to stream them off the DVD.  Regardless of whether you install it or not, the textures on the console versions are a bit low-res, but the game plays flawlessly, with no crippling issues or major bugs.  On a purely technical level, it's not the best-looking game you'll play this year, but it's far from the worst as well and the actual art design is great.

Looking forward to the multiplayer as soon as I'm done with the co-op, though I have a nagging feeling that the jets will absolutely dominate the game.  There's also the equivalent of a Gears 2-style 'horde mode', though the difficulty there ramps up quite quickly.

If I were BiiF-ing it, I'd say that it's a 'Buy' for Transformers fans, and at least a rental for everyone else.  The campaign levels so far have been about 45 mins or so long, and there's 12 of them in addition to the multiplayer and co-op modes - there's a lot of game here.

So far the only complaint from people seems to be that the vehicle modes are fairly unexciting to control.

I've seen this a couple of times tonight. I think vehicle mode rocks. Optimus says "Transform and roll out!" and everyone in the team transforms and you go to turbo mode and your inner 12 year old jumps up and down, high on Cocoa Puffs and violent cartoons.

Title: Re: War For Cybertron
Post by: Slyfeind on June 22, 2010, 11:35:46 PM
Yeah, my only complaint is things aren't distinct enough. Autobots, decepticons, ground, crates, rubble, elevators, all look kinda alike. You start to get used to it, but it still takes a moment to decide what you're shooting at.

I love dropping from jet form, spinning 180 degrees in midair while sniping with my null ray, then going back to jet and then rocketing off to another chunk of terrain to hide behind before jumping back out to shoot things and then rocketing off again.  It's less dramatic in the ground vehicle forms, but I don't think I'll ever get tired of jump/transform regardless of which character I'm playing.

Yeah, I picked this up also, and it's a hell of alot of fun, nostalgia aside.  They really did come through with the "make a good game first, make a transformers game second" mantra they were working with.  The online matchmaking server for the ps3 version seemed to take a crap tonight though.  I haven't been able to connect for around an hour now, but I just went back to working on the story mode.  I did however get enough time to play to realize I suck with the scientist, they are WAY squishy.

Are they using GameSpy for matchmaking/online (like a lot of PS3 titles)?  If so, that would mirror my experience with GameSpy on PS3 for a lot of games.  :/

Well, this all seems like good news, except that I have to wait till Friday because of Euro-fagginess.

One of the reviews said that the Scientist was actually kickass in Multiplayer, but learning the combos are almost vital.

How does the controlling on the PC work ?

Myself and a friend bought it on Steam. Played a up through chapter 2 last night. The game is decent. The difficulty curve is a bit odd up through chapter 2. It was like I could basically walk through the level blasting everything in sight, then I would get to one encounter, and die like 4 or 5 times before passing it, and then go back to easily walking through encounters.

Unlike Noisy, I enjoyed the boss for Chapter 2. I thought it was fun.

I haven't had a chance to play the multiplayer yet, but I hear thats where the game really shines. If anyone buys it on Steam and wants to coop, just hit me up. I love playing coop. /poke schild.

I don't remember seeing any GameSpy logos anywhere in the game, so I'm pretty sure it's not using it.  Likely a hand rolled solution, which was busy shitting the bed, since they only did the online beta for the Xbox version.  I'm sure it'll be fixed sooner than later, but it was annoying last night.  It did however push me into playing up through chapter 2 and the awesomeness that is Starscream and his cronies.

Okay, the online seemed a lot more stable last night on PS3.  Got a bunch of team deathmatch games in, an had an absolute blast.  As far as online FPS goes, it's more of the same, but with Transformers, but the actual transforming bit actually adds a lot for me, especially the jets.  No one class seems completely overpowered so far, but I didn't see anyone over level 10 yet.  Did fairly well with all 4, even the scientist, once I got a better hang on flying and how to drop in and out of combat and be a dick with turrets.

Still haven't gotten back to the single player though, really should though, the adventures of Starscream and friends was entertaining.

How does the controlling on the PC work ?

I picked it up on PC, will probably end up with a ps3 version as well due to split friends, but for the controls I only have 2 complaints (small ones after getting used to them):
1) Can't change controls, only 1 setup allows. So more than 3 button mice aren't used fully used here and being stuck with certain abilities locked into ctrl/shift instead of a more comfortable mouse 4/5 :oh_i_see:
2) Minor showings of consolitis such as you must use small arrows to toggle options instead of drop boxed or using keyboard arrows, esc pauses but doesn't unpause. Nothing major.

The game so far is very good. I'm still in chapter one with Megatron and have enjoyed it the entire time.

Edit: for some reason esc wasn't working to unpause, but now it is. Keyboard is old so that's probably all it was.

We're up to about chapter 3 for Autobots and Decepticons. The story (rightfully) isn't so intricate that you can't jump around and still follow it.

The Soundwave fight is awesome.
The Seeker sequence where the three jets are ripping on each other made us laugh.
In fact, I'd say the voice acting is what really makes this game come alive in single player/co-op.

Oh, the huge Autobot tank fight was great. Sly was playing Breakdown and kept his attention while I with Soundwave and AI Megatron blew his backpack up. Hella fun.

Finished up the Decepticon story, and man the last two chapters are pretty epic.  I hear the last two autobot ones follow the same vein.  You guys are in for some fun.

Been playing a ton of team deathmatch also, and absolutely wrecking people with soldier and leader.  For a while, i thought scientists and scouts were going to reign supreme, but man, if they screw up, they're such easy kills I don't even have words to describe it.  The only map they're a massive pain on is that big open one with the elevator structure in the middle.  Way too easy to snipe and fly around to the other side there without being seen.  Other than that, loving it so far, which feels really odd for me to say since I haven't really been down with an online fps in a long long time.

The last autobot  chapters are pretty insane, and the end boss was a bitch until I finally figured it out. For me, it was harder than the end chapter for Decepticons.

As for the multiplayer, I agree completely. Soldier/Leader seems to be much better due to their higher health and whirlwind is pretty damn good in multiplayer, but a higher level scientist who knows exactly what to do can absolutely destroy someone.

I have this and dipped my toe into multiplayer.  It's a case of 'Transform and get sniped by that lame camping faggot over there'.  Ouchie.

Fun so far tho.

Getting the 30 seconds alive and then the 60 seconds alive xp bonuses was nice.   :oh_i_see:

Title: Re: War For Cybertron
Post by: Segoris on June 27, 2010, 06:59:51 AM
It's definitely fast paced, I know I've had some games where I was surprised to live for more than 20 seconds or so. Though the respawn being very fast is nice and the maps aren't large enough to take long to get back in the action. The best part, imo, no voice or chat that I've seen yet. Meaning no shitty community to ruin what is a pretty good game.

Almost done with single player. Aerialbots versus Trypticon fight was cool. The hard part was getting past the big fights with lots of Cons running around. Those get manic, even on medium difficulty. Sly and I are just slamming deaths at them until we get past it. Trypticon himself was an easy rail-shooter sequence, but we're not at the very final fight yet. Just completed the part where he crashes to Cybertron.

I've tinkered around with Escalation, seems fun. The AI is either pretty good or completely dumb. I've finished a round by shooting some dumb Con whose just jumping against a wall.  :oh_i_see:

Sadly no, no combination transformations were done :( It's Air Raid, Silver Bolt, and Jetfire for the 3 flying bots. That said, anyone who was a fan of Transformers has no right to not buy this game, they did it incredibly well. I was prepared for a raping of childhood memories only to be very pleasantly surprised.

Also, I can't play enough conquest mode in multiplayer, damn that is well done. Pretty well balanced as well even between low levels and level 20+ characters.

Serious question:  I've no real interest in Transformers, since I wasn't exposed to them at an early age. If you have no love (or hate) for Transformers, would this game still be rated as 'great', or does it sorta require an attachment to the series?

Nostalgia really really helps, I think, but it's hard to tell since I'm wallowing in it.  I really like the online play, and can't really explain why.  If you have access to an Xbox, go try the multiplayer demo.  Otherwise maybe hold out for an actual demo, although I don't know if one is forthcoming or not.

I enjoyed the multiplayer demo on xbox. Think I'll pick this up soon on the PC.

It's hard for me to seperate them, but I'll try.

There complaints against it are valid. I've fallen through the world and gotten hung up on geometry. There's no chat or voice in multiplayer. The keys cannot be rebound. (Rebinded?) If you're not a TF fan, it will probably feel like an average 3rd person shooter with a gimmick (transforming) thrown in. The neon appearance of the TFers and the darkness of the rest of the textures kinda makes it look more like Tron.

I believe the nostalgia and lack of a decent TFers game until now is what pushes it from Average to Awesome for fans.

Yes.

There are better FPS shooters out there.  Better Deatmatch Online experiences.

But this is Transformers.  This is Transformers done WELL.

Don't bother if that doesn't mean anything.  Not being snide; it's only if you've ever actually dreamed of ramming 3 decepticons out of the way while screaming 'MEGATRON MUST BE STOPPED;  NO MATTER THE COST' and then laughing as some sniping wee Scout cunt sticks a blade in you, ending you about as effectively as Hot Rod deciding NOW is the time to step in during your fight with Megatron.

Anyone able to tell how many people are playing on 360/PS3? I don't know if the console communities can see how many are playing each type of game like the PC can. Though I don't know if the PC servers/numbers are by region or if it's the entire community.

While I agree the complaints are valid (not being able to rebind keys at least on the PC version is my biggest complaint), I must say that I think the lack of chat and voice is a good thing given the average online community. If it was a game that wasn't as fast paced and didn't have such small maps, I wouldn't see lack of communication a positive. I just think it fits this game well to not have that communication (longest respawn time I've had was 3 to 5 seconds. Normally when I die it spectates the person who killed me in 3rd person mode and by the time I see where they are, I'm respawned. getting back in the action takes less then 10 seconds as well.

Also, if playing a scientist and you fall through the floor, turn into a jet. That normally saves you. Anyone else is pretty much fucked.

I'd like to be able to chat with people on my friends list. A buddy from another state got the game, and I won't be able to communicate with him at all without an outside program. I'm pointing him to X-Fire right now since that's what I've got.

The PS3 version straight up tells you how many people are online and how many are in each game mode, probably the same as on PC.  Evening PST I usually see 4000-7000 players online, and usually about 700 of them in Team Deathmatch.

I can't honestly say it was a bad decision in general to not have communication (it was straight up clown shoes) only that I'm appreciating the time spent on a fast pace FPS not hearing the slur of the day every 5 seconds as a positive feature. Double edged sword situation, especially with the example you provided.

That is quite a few more then the PC version. Right now it's at 500 people, the most I've seen was 1.1k. Though it's only 6pm cst, I'm guessing it will average out over the week at about 700-800.

Finished the single player campaigns. Game can be frustrating as hell at points. Missile barrage=move your fucking ass. The Trypticon fight had fewer powerups than Omega's. One cube between two people is rough.

Well worth it though.

Oh, and much nostalgia as I have for The Touch, Stan Bush is just painful to listen to now.

Most fun maneuver for me is as an aerialbot, dogfighting, pchew pchew akakakakak, then getting in close then transforming and WHACKING WITH YOUR ENERGON SWORD then transforming right before you fall to your death. There are more effective ways to kill an enemy, but damn if it doesn't look awesome.

I proclaim that is game does indeed have The Touch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkYuK3AKrxc)

Seriously?  I haven't heard it yet, where is it?  Also kind of surprised that the old theme song isn't in there anywhere, given how much the game references the movie.

Does anyone know what those big destroyable floating Autobot/Decepticon symbols do?  I assumed they'd be some kind of unlock or something, but I can't find anything online about what they do, and all that I see in the "extras" section is concept art, which is already all unlocked.

The Touch isn't in the game, I was saying the game is good.

I heard they unlock a couple of trophies.

I'm a bit bummed that the awards and achievements aren't in the PC, but whatever.

I've grown enormously fond of the Moleculon bomb;  I just wish it didn't LOOK so bloody silly.

I also wish to hell I was able to kill anyone with Ram.  It may hurt them, but it never seems to kill them.

Heh, I won a match a few days ago ramming into a pack of three that were all winged by a soldier with a scrapmaker.  It was pretty epic (although not really the deciding factor in the win of the match, since it was pretty lopsided to begin with).

Going to quote you over here and continue in this thread, instead of spamming the other one.

As for that use of shockwave, it is handy but then with my setup I feel a little defenseless once I have someone in my face after pushing people off the node (healer abilities in all slots except for the rocket sentry while running shockwave/sentry as my skills). I will say that I noticed a good scientist is annoying, a great scientist is almost god.

I mostly ran with a full healer build in power struggle, since playing support there was obscenely powerful.

In Conquest though, I generally roll with shockwave + turret, and run to whatever the center node is, if it's being captured, transform midair, drop the turret in the air, hit the ground, shockwave, transform and leave.  I only really harass there to buy time for others to get there, or to delay the node capture.  Otherwise I'll go find any node that's not currently ours, and go sit on it, and either force people to come stop me, or take it.  Dying in conquest doesn't really affect me in any way other than getting my shockwave and turret back sooner.  The insane mobility gets you back to the fight nearly immediately.  A lot of times, I end up with both the highest amount of deaths and yet the highest amount of points on my team doing that.

I'm only this suicidal playing that class in that mode though.  I'm a lot more conservative with the other classes and other modes.  I'm also at the point where I can see a cloaked scout coming and a disguised scientist hasn't fooled me for a while.  I'm not saying I'm good, I still die a lot.  Especially to guys who come in behind or above me.  I also suck major balls with soldiers, both as and against them.  I die as soon as I end up in scrapmaker fire, and can't seem to ever kill anyone with it myself.  Sitting at around level 12-15 with all the classes now though, so it's not from a lack of trying.

With shockwaving people capturing, I'll stay and fight if it's only 1-2 while I use my heal grenade (solder/leader or 2x of either soldier/leader I won't stick around to fight though). Also, I would look for the strongest player and stick with them playing healer bot when I'm able, and do the shockwaves on people capturing nodes while I'm on my way back to finding that person to continue healing the rare times I find someone worth shadowing.

As for disguised scientists: if you have your repair ray as the equipped weapon, you won't see their health bar while their name is blue, and that is a dead give-a-way.

Cloaked scouts are pretty easy to see when paying attention. I think that's why I enjoy the stealth here and think they did it right as it's easy enough to see if you pay attention but it's good enough where people can still sneak up on others effectively. I must say I'm enjoying the scout a lot after I hit level 8-10 range. I'm running a scatter blaster/Null ray (10x zoom), mark target/cloaking, surprise attack/health matrix/weapon stabilizer mostly, though I switch in dash for marking and leg servos for health matrix as my secondary build. At 25 I'll switch weapon stabilizer out for Rapid Recharge (quicker cooldowns) in that main build

Also, do you have health matrix on your scientist? When I got level 5, my second scientist slot had health matrix as the middle upgrade but the others can't.

Yeah, I'm not 100% sure of my scientist builds right now, and can't really check.  I usually bulk up for shockwave or for healing as far as the traits go, whatever makes me better at those.

Been playing Leader a lot also lately, and god they're beasts.  I've really taken to liking the martyrdom trait.  It almost always gets me a kill after I die.  At first I thought it was a worthless junk trait since at first glance, I felt like I shouldn't ever be dying.  Except dying resets your killstreaks and your abiltiies.  And it's going to happen at some point anyhow.  And the mine does no good if it doesn't hit anything before you die, which it often won't if you're in the middle of a group.

At least I'm at the point where I don't feel any one class is more powerful than the others though.  They're all disturbingly wrong in their own ways.  If only I didn't suck so bad with the soldier.

I thought starscream's first boss fight with rotating beam fence was a bitch too. Really reminded me of a WoW raid or something, that and Starscream vent chat of 'YOU FOOL!' and Skywarp's 'Are we even hurting this thing?' gelled together well.

3 months out. I still fire this up from time to time, to get my Transformers gaming fix, but it's kinda sad. I tried a little PvP, but I'm lukewarm on the format. I love Escalation, but no one I know plays it, so I solo it for a few levels.  :uhrr:

At this point, I really wish they'd 1. Support the PC version, and 2. Made the DLC single player/co-op stuff. I have no clue how it's doing on the X-Box version, so maybe I'm just the cranky nerdboy ranting against the clouds.
