Title: Grave of the Fireflies
Post by: Fraeg on December 17, 2009, 05:34:37 PM
Brother gave this to me  ye gods I never thought I would shed a tear over something animated.  Not done with it had to turn it off last night and should finish it tonight.  Anyone else watched this?  Anything else animated that is on par with this that you can recommend?

I have watched Castle in the Sky/Clouds, Princes Mononoke, oh and a handful of other animated films that never moved me past thinking "hmm interesting", but Grave of the Foreflies is (ok what I have watched so far) simply amazing.

Yeah, I don't know man.  I think Grave of the Firefly's is probably just about the most depressing story I've ever seen across any medium.

Hrm, nothing I can think of that's moved me as much, no.  That movie is just at an entirely different level from the rest of the animes I've seen.

It's on an entirely different level than any movie in cinema, forget anime. Leaves it in the fucking dust.

Then watch these 8 minutes of Robert McNamara (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmJDj-oLYyM) from Fog of War, and put that experience in perspective. The bit starting at 4:10, especially.

Grave of the Fireflies leaves you with that empty kind of sadness. Not like a Romance Sadness where you feel upset for the main character because they wouldn't share a floating door. It's that desolate feeling that gets me.

God damnit, this gets worst.  I watched this movie before I went to Japan, and didn't remember the exact specifics.  Like, that it took place in Kobe, which is where I lived in my year in Japan.  Turns out the place you see main character starving to death in the very beginning (Sannomiya Station) is the same station that I went through almost every weekend night towards party's/debauchery, and back again, puking on the rails or making out with girls around the same spot he died.

 :oh_i_see: :oh_i_see: :oh_i_see: :oh_i_see:

Way to ruin my memory's!

Your puking and debauchery should be seen as positive, a celebration of how far the Japanese and the people of the world have moved forward after the decimation and inhumanity of WWII.

This is easily the most powerful, moving film I've ever seen.

You'll never forget the movie once you've seen it, and definitely finish that shit tonight.

something came up should be able to watch it this weekend.

I watched The Fog of War, and yeah that was a pretty powerful film.

So the Fireflies stand alone it seems.

Just caught this oddly enough from a person at work. Off chance I looked to see if anyone on here experienced this beast. Incredible story

Quills is good.

Umm... Constant Gardener?

Neither of those have the emotional power of Fireflies, but they're good, moving films too.
