Title: Newbie Tutors?
Post by: Valmorian on December 15, 2009, 08:38:02 AM
I've gone through most of the tutorials, and while I think I have a grasp on the VERY basics, I'm still not really sure of how to do PVP "Right" and so on.  Do we have anyone in the Corp who a newbie can group with and be shown "the ropes" with?

So far I've managed to get a Merlin Class ship, but I understand a new player will be mostly used for tackling .. would it make more sense to use a Heron with some Electronics Warfare modules and just fly with someone who has the firepower?

I'd also like to get in on some newbie PVP action; I'm running a Punisher with wiki-suggested fittings.

Edit: wrong ship name.

Me too me too!

I haven't quite finished the tutorials yet though, my game playing time has been severely curtailed lately what with this pesky holiday coming up.

Where is everyone at? Who is in corp?

I could maybe run an old fashion 'let's go die at random 0.0 gate' kind of thing....

I'm in corp, heading back to C6Y from whereever we have to go to buy nice things.

I'm still in the newbie system for Caldari, whever the hell that is.  I'm not in any corp, because I couldn't figure out who to ask or what the hell to do to get into it..

That and I wanted to at least finish most of the tutorials before I even tried.

Makes sense. Might not hurt to do a couple level 1 missions maybe, get a decent feel for game mechanics.

I will say its going to be interesting for any brand new guy down here in Delve, but we will throw money at you and hopefully someone will show you the ropes of combat and finding fleets and whatnot.

I'm occasionally get tempted to play Eve, and then threads like this remind me that it would probably be easier to become a real life spaceship captain.

Sometimes it feels that way.. this game is better than it was when I first tried it at helping out new players get used to the mechanics though.

My only real gripe so far is the information overload.  Looking at a gun I have NO IDEA if it's going to improve my DPS or not.  At least with Shields and Armor it's pretty straightforward..

Don't fret hard over the details at this stage.  Just get some missions and get the hang of flying around and making people dead so you can take their belongings.  You'll be glad for that experience when you aren't the newbie bumbling off in the wrong direction and getting laughed at while you die.

You'll still die, but at least you'll die without mocking laughter in your ears.

Be very careful, there are almost no level 1 missions out in Delve, as I have discovered...

I managed to find a Level 1 agent, but the mission was considerably more difficult than any of the tutorial ones. I had to warp out repeatedly because I couldn't handle tanking 5+ ships at a time.

The tutorial missions are really, really easy.  But ask in Corp or the f13 channel and we'll help you fit your ship so you can burn through any L1.

Also, running missions in Delve is dangerous because those stations are all NPC and hostiles base out of them as well.  Even if someone appears neutral, they can and will shoot at you given the opportunity.

Yep, you get given The Blockade or the Police Interception one very early and continually... and you have no hope doing it if you are 14 days old.  A newbie in a frigate or a destroyer cant tank 12 pirates with missiles.

Which leaves one with very few missions to use in Delve.

Could have something to do with pirate missions being ten times more profitable than high-sec ones.

PVP has never been my thing, but for fitting a ship, the wiki is awesome. For making isk...missions in Delve are dangerous, however, most who rat do not bother to loot or salvage wrecks. Ask, you can most likely follow someone, looting for them, and making 3-4 million per belt that you loot because normally, bounty = loot + salvage. Need a newbie hull? We give them away, just ask in corp.  Need some pvp action...join the def channel, and get in the alliance ops. Something is almost always going on.

I ran a frigate op on Saturday, and all were welcome, with a corp mail linking to the places details were posted.  I am running a slightly more serious business black ops gang this Friday, but as I made clear here (http://www.goonfleet.com/showthread.php?p=3391230#post3391230) and here (http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=18443.0) newbies are the most welcome ships on it.  I'll put a corp mail out about that today, too.  I'll hopefully be running quite a few of these as things continue, so get trained into fast frigates/blackbirds then interceptors/stealth bombers, then recons etc...

Also this is not the private forum, and if you don't know about that then we have a failing in the procedures for getting new members access, since we should have your f13 names when you apply.  For the ops I'm running you should be visiting the LoveU subforum on goonfleet.com.  Are newbies not getting told how to access that?  Because that would be A Bad Thing.
