Title: The $5000 Man
Post by: patience on November 21, 2009, 07:57:49 PM
In today's digital and media age it seems like a less probable chance of living a new life. One man sought to see how you can make yourself disappear from society, before placing a $5000 bounty on himself.

This is his story. (http://www.wired.com/vanish/2009/11/ff_vanish2/)

Rule #1: Get off the grid.

When you fail rule #1, you're going to fail.

So exactly why did he make a new twitter and facebook account and start trying to socialblogbullshit while he was on the lam?

Because a story about a man that chose to disappear for 30 uneventful days with no trail doesn't make an exciting read.

Neither did this, or the made up line at the end :(

Not everyone wants to live in a log cabin in a deserted forest. Trying to reinvent yourself is the point and a much better one.

Trivial and rule number one is still "get off the grid."

You don't even get off the grid. You have to disconnect and leave NO trail to your previous life. That includes going on the same chat rooms and using twitter and all that shit.

And logging into websites of people tracking you or going on television interviews which clearly show your face.

Well, yea, that'd be getting off the grid >_<

I'd generally think of getting off the grid as going to live in a cabin in the mountains surviving on a diet of berries, local wildlife, and lost hikers - but theres no reason you couldn't successfully re-invent yourself and avoid being caught like this idiot by not doing things like subscribe to the facebook group dedicated to trying to catch you, going to your favorite sporting event, and eating at wierdo fucking niche health food restaurants.

Seriously number one rule for going on the lam is to not go online at all for anything. If you go online enough eventually people will track you down.

Even I'm starting to go :uhrr: from people trying to reiterate what schild said in too many words. We get it.
