It allows for large parallel computing tasks with a homebuilt system.

For certain kinds of tasks it makes a really cheap supercomputer (especially now that we've got gigabit+ networking).

In fact, the (number 2 as of this week) fastest supercomputer ever built a year ago was partially powered by them. Apparently they scale very well in massively parallel applications.
