SONY ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT AND WIZARDS OF THE COAST COLLABORATE TO DEVELOP

MAGIC: THE GATHERING -TACTICS™

Quote
DENVER, Colo. – November 2, 2009 – Today, Sony Online Entertainment LLC, and Wizards of the Coast LLC announced they are developing Magic: The Gathering – Tactics, an online, 3D turn-based strategy game played within the rich Magic: The Gathering Multiverse.

“By collaborating with Wizards of the Coast, we’re able to combine the strengths of both companies to develop an innovative, online, 3D game based on an extremely popular IP,” said John Smedley, president, Sony Online Entertainment. “We’re going to be taking the Magic: The Gathering Multiverse places players have never seen.”

“The growing Magic: The Gathering community has an insatiable desire for great strategic game experiences.  Sony Online Entertainment is the perfect partner to transform the best of Magic’s story, strategy and competitive play into a fantastic ‘Tactics’ game experience for current and new Magic fans,” said Greg Leeds, president, Wizards of the Coast.

Magic: The Gathering - Tactics will allow players to command forces of dramatic 3D figures and powerful spell cards pulled from the Magic: The Gathering Multiverse. Players can participate in single player scenarios or jump right into PVP action against other players worldwide, 24 hours per day. Magic: The Gathering – Tactics is expected to feature regular content expansions, a robust tournament environment, an achievement and rankings program, and original stories of the Planeswalkers of Magic: The Gathering.

Magic: The Gathering - Tactics is being developed by SOE’s Denver studio and scheduled to be available for the PC in early 2010, with a version for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system to follow.

By the newly acquired Octopi. Seems like a good setup, hope the gameplay is more refined than Pox Nora though.

Yikes. I kind of hope it sucks, I don't need a habit like this.

I think this has huge potential, especially if they pull off a good cross-selling integration with the card game. I bet is going to rely heavily on people keeping purchasing cards, and as long as they have something tangible for it, it might work.

I've been wanting to see more done with M:tG since...forever! It's too rich a world not to.

Is "multiverse" the right term for it? Seems like it's just one universe to me.

Multiverse is correct. All the stuff in the cards doesn't all exist in the same universe.

Not only multiverse but chronoloically speaking it's a god damn mess.

If I was still in AZ, I would apply to work there as I don't trust anyone with my precious MtG.

So, is it right to assume we're talking about a 3d gametable version of MtG basically?  Bout time...
Early 2010 though??

No, I don't think so. Probably more of a tactical game with collectible elements in the MtG setting. (like Pox Nora as schild mentions, think also games like Heroes of Might and Magic, or X-Com.)

I'm never going to see Ingmar again if this game is even remotely good.

This will be the interesting part of this game for me.

Good luck Ingmar!

I am easily distracted by things like Sims Expansions, so he could probably get away with a lot.  :drillf:

Sure this is done by Octopi? Looks like SOE Denver to me.

If it is SOE Denver, I might be able to swing some beta slots ...

Note to Wizards:

Hey there fuckers, instead of this, why not make M:tG online not suck.

M:tG Online is made in-house. This is licensed stuff made by another company. In other words, no resources are being taken from M:tGO to do this instead.

You are 100% correct. My bad.

I will be contacting people to get a shitload of beta slots for f13, no worries there.

The "not suck" feature will be in Magic: The Gathering Online version 4.0, which is currently being coded by drunken monkeys in a basement somewhere outside of Lubbock.

The entire industry expects that the results will easily surpass the current architecture for M:TtG online.

Tycho has a short interview with Smedley about the game at Penny-Arcade.

Out of curiosity, since I gave up on MtG:O when I realized how crappy the collectible aspect is realized and how they're ripping you off for cards: How does it suck currently? I played some back when it was first released, and it was simply an online version of the physical game tucked ontop of an online lobby system. It didn't suck in the same way "online chess" couldn't suck if all you do is play chess.

The cards are actually much, much cheaper than cardboard.  Especially if you are a moderately competent drafter.  If you stick to formats other than Standard/Extended (like Pauper or Singleton, that does have a higher "buy in" but then costs very little since it doesn't really change) it can be a whole lot cheaper.  As long as you aren't trying to ride the cutting edge of popular net decks in Standard/Extended, cost really isn't that onerous.

The major current and continuing problem is the interface which is slow, kludgy, and just all around a pain in the ass.  Last summer, when MTGO made the jump to the new version, there were also severe stability problems which have been ironed out.

The fact that they still haven't managed to get Leagues working again is another huge sore point for alot of people.

No one has posted there in months.

So I guess that's a good answer. :)

Of course ill be all over this.

As usual with MtG, the pricing model will determine it's fate far more than the gameplay (assuming the gameplay doesnt completely suck).  To date, the wizards in charge of making such decisions have showed an immense skill at shoving their heads up their own asses.

Seriously, how hard would it be to have a flat monthly model for decent gameplay and no collectability with microtrans for those who want more?

They should make a card game with a 5 dollar monthly fee and cards/packs costs are like pennies and quarters.

This is a perfect storm of an opportunity to suck my soul away if it comes out decent.

I've been hoping for a quality CCG (I played MTG until about 98), or enough of a quality local group to play one of the various wargames.

Eh, make all the things F2P...why not? (http://store.steampowered.com/app/201190/)

It's kinda been out a while.  They're considering it a new release 'cause it's now F2P?  :/
Anyways, terribad...f2p or not.

Wasn't it always F2P? Oh and it was fucking terrible at that, so not worth bothering with unless they pay you to play.
