Title: Tropico 3 Came out Today
Post by: schild on October 21, 2009, 06:01:53 PM
I do not have Torchlight yet.

Borderlands is in five days.

How good is it? SOMEONE CLUE ME IN. I MUST KNOW WHETHER TO ENTERTAIN MYSELF FOR A SOLID 48 HOURS.

It's funny for 2 days. I think I'm done with it though!

Some of it is comical.  Not really worth the investment though.  Might entertain you for a day.

I tried the demo. It seemed to be almost the exact same game as Tropico/Tropico 2 with very minor adjustments - policy system, your individual avatar. In fact, it seemed a poor copy of the original, as in the original I could actually get shit done whereas in T3 my workers just don't seem to do much, you know, work. Especially those useless construction drones.

The radio voiceover guy keeps insisting I am a dude. ><

If you liked the first Tropico, I imagine you'd like Tropico 3. I don't think it's a bad copy of the original (it is a little easier, in that I don't totally fail even the beginner missions like I did in Tropico  :why_so_serious:), but it doesn't add much new stuff to the formula.

Plus I can play it on this goddamn laptop I'm stuck with while I wait for my new computer to arrive.

It entertained me for a bit but it's a rather shallow game once the gimmick wears off.

I played it for a few days, there's some interesting problems that apparently are engine issues;  The population is hard-capped at 820? 840? Somewhere in that neighborhood, and for a city builder with a sandbox mode, that's easily achievable in under 3 hours of gameplay.  There is also apparently a hardcap on the number of road intersections allowed in the game, and quite a few people have run into that issue.  It seems like the engine they're using just is way too limiting for a game like this, at least to me.

The game isn't even challenging from the financial aspect, get enough money -> build oil refinery -> unable to spend the money fast enough.

Maybe I'm spoiled by games like Anno and Civ, but not being able to even use half of the map before the game starts capping population seems silly to me, especially for a city-builder.
