Title: MI5 Returns Post by: HaemishM on January 03, 2005, 02:14:37 PM If you haven't seen the Brit drama "MI5" on A&E, you need to. So far it's run 2 seasons worth of shows, and it makes 24 looks even more ridiculous than 24 actually is. It is a very naturalistic look at the "spy game" type of thriller, with a lot more down to earthiness than most dramas of this type ever could hope to be. The 3rd season begins on AE this Saturday, Jan. 8th at 8 am EST (not sure why it's 8 in the bleeding morning). It also has the production quality of old Monty Python. Which is a goddamn shame. Alias starts Wed at 9pm though. Just sayin.'

Not to mention that the production values lend a certain "realism" to the whole production. As opposed to having Daleks running around screaming "EXTERMINATE!" while bonking helplessly into the stairs.
Title: MI5 Returns Post by: eldaec on January 05, 2005, 04:58:36 AM I assume this is 'Spooks' renamed. If so, yeah, it has its moments, but after a few shows when you realise they couldn't even afford a few extras to make it look like MI5 has more than 5 employees, it starts to get annoying.
Also it has the typical BBC 'life is hell' disease where nothing good is allowed to happen to anyone under any circumstances. Most people's lives, even spies, aren't that dramatic day in and day out. Hence, something happens every week, and it's usually not good, because people don't watch dramas that start out with "I'm still happy" as a plot premise.

Most dramas have at least enough in them to get 2, maybe 3 seasons of good quality drama out of them before it turns into "Shit on the characters". For example, ER would have been a much better show had it just sopped after season 3. Instead it's turned into "Which character will have the most shittastic life THIS season! Tune in to find out!" I know everyone's got a hard-on for "Without A Trace" recently, but I think it's already in the shitter. When you have an entire episode that relies on a character's life to provide the drama rather than, y'know, the show's premise in SEASON 2! you've got problems. Even CSI has started to fall into this trap over the last season and a half. The recent 'shakeup' in the shifts had my eyes rolling because it's fucking soap opera bullshit instead of crime drama. If your show his hit a wall where you can't pull a show off without resorting to this BS, then you've got a shitty premise or shitty writers. Law & Order has done pretty well over the years giving us insight into the characters without turning large chunks of episodes into, "OMG Will Jack Sleep with THIS assistant!" |
