Quote Freedom over. Back to work, plebeians. I just wanted to add, that I don't go back to work before the 3rd of january. Who's the plebian? Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? Post by: WayAbvPar on December 28, 2004, 01:30:52 PM I work today and tomorrow. I can live with 2 day work weeks. How else am I gonna get caught up on all the posts here? Christ knows I have better things to do when I am home...
Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? Post by: Signe on December 28, 2004, 01:32:42 PM Isn't posting a comment to a thread that's been locked a bannable offence? Really is a shame... I sort of like Hanzii, but I miss the bans even more. The mods are too soft around here. I've put you all on my 'limp' list.
Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? Post by: Hanzii on December 28, 2004, 01:38:32 PM Isn't calling for someones ban a bannable offense?... ooops.
Anyway, this isn't a comment on the locked thread, just me being an ass an pointing off that I have a full week of (with pay). Just watch me, when I go on my 3 months maternity leave at the end of next year (again with full pay) ;-) Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? Post by: naum on December 28, 2004, 01:44:46 PM Happy Hannukwanzmas!
Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? Post by: Signe on December 28, 2004, 02:10:03 PM I didn't call for your ban, Hanzii. I would never do that! I was just asking a question and trying to stir something up. You know me.
Gratz on the 3 months paid maternity leave! Oh, nice work on the baby making, too. :) Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? I'm sure that paid maternity leave isn't unheard of (the law mandates that the wife will get at least 6 months). But thanks for the congratulations anyway. The kid will be here at the end of may, and I will be taking time off when he/she is 6 months old - hopefully sleeping through at the time, so I can get some writing done. Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? Post by: Calantus on December 28, 2004, 03:25:24 PM I work for the government and they have supplied me with 3 weeks off.
I win. Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? Post by: HaemishM on December 28, 2004, 05:07:15 PM Yep, I only get this entire week off to catass all the games I got for Christmas.
Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? Post by: SirBruce on December 28, 2004, 05:32:56 PM I went back to work today, although admittedly I am currently self-employed. I can't tell you WHAT I worked on, though, or I'll get banned.
Bruce Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? Post by: Hanzii on December 28, 2004, 05:40:32 PM That's not work.
Unless you get paid for it, which I doubt since you can't afford prober hosting for your spreadsheet abomination. Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? Post by: SirBruce on December 28, 2004, 05:46:28 PM Unfortunately, all I'm allowed to say is I am getting paid.
Bruce Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? Post by: stray on December 28, 2004, 05:55:41 PM Gonna have to say more than that if you want a Red Name, Bruce.
Good try though. EDIT: On the other hand, that's isn't a bad idea. Just spew it out, man. Perhaps you'll get banned, but you'll get a Red Name while you're at it. Everyone wins in that deal. I'm pretty sure this isn't about SB. Anyway, this was about me. Did I mention, that I get 6 paid vacation weeks a year in addition to the holidays and the week between christmas and the new year (which made this year expensive for my employer). Title: Work? Wrenching it back ontopic: OK, so you get half a year paid vacation. On the other hand, I didn't pay 60% of my income in taxes! Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? Post by: Signe on December 28, 2004, 08:07:32 PM Every four years, I get an extra day off work.
Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? Post by: Abagadro on December 28, 2004, 10:28:04 PM Congrats on the bambino. I'd suggest taking the PL earlier. Your wife will need the help the first couple of months a lot more than at 6 months.
Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? Post by: Tebonas on December 28, 2004, 10:42:44 PM I rather work now when everybody else is on holiday and use my free days when the annoying people need more customer support after the holidays.
I may be a plebian, but my slacking skills are maxed. Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? My wife and I were allowed 12 weeks paid, assuming we had the leave banked up. If not, they're still required by law to allow for leave, just not as paid. Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? Post by: shiznitz on December 29, 2004, 06:53:35 AM Paternity leave is for pussies. I took 2 vacation days for both my kids. Sucks to be them. Or me.
Oh wait, Hanzii lives in socialist land. Forgot that part. And just to finish off with a chauvinist flourish, women who have kids and go back to work deserve the fucked up kids they get. That "we cannot afford to have only parent working crap" is BS. Stopping thinking in $$ and start thinking in <3 <3. Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? Talk is cheap, and the reality of economics sucks. It's both my and my wife's preference that she stay at home. We can't afford for her to. It would have been doable BEFORE a kid, but not with. Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? Post by: Merusk on December 29, 2004, 08:20:21 AM Grats on the Bambino, Hanzii. I'm jealous of your long paternatiy, since all I got was my 2 weeks of vacation.
Quote from: Roac Talk is cheap, and the reality of economics sucks. It's both my and my wife's preference that she stay at home. We can't afford for her to. It would have been doable BEFORE a kid, but not with. Yep. Though, when you hit 2 kids it really starts to become much more affordable for the lowest-earning one of you to stay home. Cheap daycare was $120 a week for an at-home grandma in the ghetto when my daughter was age 1-3 and I know I should have been paying more. Places that actually educate your kid for preschool/ kindergarden (provided you can get in) run at least $175 a week per kid around here, more if the kid isn't past potty-training. When you sit down and look at $1400 a month plus travel, missed work when the kid is sick and daycare won't take them, and all the other errata you start to think, "Crap, it really ISN'T worth it." So long as you can cover utility bills, food, gas & mortgage the rest is just fluff you've convinced yourself you can't live without. Kids aren't that expensive until they're teenagers. The big "ow" is really in the initial outlay from things you need to buy that you didn't know about or think to get. Like, "whoops.. baby gate!" or, "Oh crap extra bottle nipples!" Of course, the other choice is to do like my wife and I have for the last year because she wants to work. She stays home while I'm at work, then goes to her evening job from 6-11. Sucks to never see your wife except on the weekends, though. Title: Work? Why do you think they wish you Happy holidays? That "we cannot afford to have only parent working crap" is BS. Stopping thinking in $$ and start thinking in <3 <3. Lum is almost right, though the number is closer to 40 than 60 percent. But one of the things all that money gets me is high quality daycare at reasonable rates - refunds for any child after the first. I don't see any evidence, that kids with working moms (as long as the alternative care is good) are more fucked up than those with moms at home. It really is chauvenist. Some conservative romatizising and pretending that kids were better of in the old days, when mom was at home. Of course they were just as messed up - those mothers didn't have more time for caring upbringing, they just had more kids and more chores. We could well afford to let the wife take care of both kids at home, but honestly think we offer them more opportunities later in life if we're both working and saving for house, holidays abroad, the possibility for a year in the US or Australia during high school and all those other things that will broaden their horizon more, than mom baking cookies every day. Having a well educated and intellectualy stimulated mom will probably also help them in the long run. I only took 14 days leave when my daughter was born - if was in the middle of an important internship and my career couldn't really afford more. This choice landed me a job with 12 weeks paid leave (not mandated by the government, but they pay some of the cost). So now I will take 14 days when he/she is born and then 12 weeks when the wife returns to her job. This makes the kid 9 months old when he/she begins daycare. My daughter was 6 months and is a very well stimulated kid. (my own mother had to leave me in other peoples care to go to work after a month and I seem to be doing quite fine) Title: Work? Post by: Boogaleeboo on December 29, 2004, 04:37:20 PM Quote I don't see any evidence, that kids with working moms (as long as the alternative care is good) are more fucked up than those with moms at home. It's called every single crime study in every single country on the planet, ever. And it's not "working moms" but "single parent households" which just usually means working moms. Not all of them, but a statisically relevent portion. Oddly enough, and stop me if you've heard this one, but raising children? Not easy. Loving parents generally = better kids. This isn't always true though. Sometimes life just fucks you up. Statsically speaking, it's more likely to do so with only one primary caregiver. It doesn't mean that working women are the devil. |
