Everyone tells me I'm paranoid, but I know my hair.. I think I'm thinning on top (possibly could be traced back to April when I died 3 times in one month :X But after I shaved it all off, I noticed some thinning... and it's grown out thin).

So what works, do you think? I actually bought some Rogaine equivalent (cheaper), that's supposedly for top thinning. Anyone have luck with it? I can't be the only fool who's tried this.

I have a friend who used it (not sure if he still is). It did help slow his hair loss but it didn't stop it completely.

I started going bald at late 20's. Never used rogaine. Figured being thin on top was better than having oily hair from the medication. Now I just shave my head.

Trying to hide male pattern baldness in any way just serves to highlight both the baldness *and* your insecurity about it.

Embrace it. You don't have any real choice. Crew cut for the rest of your life is the only thing that doesn't make you look like a douche.

I'm going bald. I keep my hair under half an inch, if that. Generally about a quarter after a haircut. My problem is that I'm only going bald on the top of my head and nowhere else, and I'm not gonna be some motherfucker with a roman crown. The moment it gets super bad, it's shaved head time.

What exactly is male pattern baldness? It's only thin on top. No one can really tell unless a light is shining on top.. Like you can make out my scalp shape. I have no receding pattern though. In fact, I have even have a couple of stray hairs at the top of my forehead (not that that really means anything, but I'm just illustrating that I have more than enough hair in the front).

Anyways, I agree though.. I'm not interesting in hiding anything.. But if there's a way to nip it in the bud now, I would. Or if i should just say fuck it and shave my head, I'll do that too.

There's no way to combat it. It is, in fact, the holy grail of the cosmetics industry. So much so that there are multiple movies about it. Hell, wasn't Duplicity about it and that came out just last year?

Male pattern baldness is what males get.  Female pattern baldness is what females get, which is an overall thinning.

I figure I will have two choices if mine starts to go: be a creepy douchebag or shave my head.  Haven't decided yet.

I shaved my head at 36 and have been shaved ever since.  I have discovered that there is a population of women out there that have a thing for bald men.  It was a wonderful discovery. 

As an alternative, I could have used Chia seeds.

Getting a thin spot in the back.  Going to look like I'm wearing a skin colored yamaka in a 5-10 years.  The rest of my hair is fine - nice and thick, with zero grey.  But that little spot in the back where I've got a cowlick?  Getting thin.  I've made the rogaine or razor decision.  I won't go with the full Telly Savalas look, though.  I've got an ugly, lumpy head.   I'm just going to keep cutting my hair closer and closer.

Another vote for shaving your head.  I've been doing it for about 5 years now.  I started out with the "do it yourself clippers at 1/2 an inch guard" haircut at age 30.  Gradually, I've worked down ever since. 

The real issue isn't about whether or not you should shave your head.  It's the following:

1) How many times a week to you shave it?
2) What Razor?
3) In the shower or in the sink?


The answers are 1) 3 times a week 2) Anything with 4 blades.  The Headblade is nice if you are not coordinated and 3) In the shower.  (get a suction cup mirror from Wal-mart)

I think I may be going slowly bald,but Ive always had a receded hairline so its difficult to tell. I did shave my head down to skin and i swear it grew back a bit thinner then before. I really could give less of a fuck I shave my head anyway,if it gets bad Ill shave it to skin. Sucks that pale white guys tend to look sickly with shaved heads.

Asian males are less likely to have male pattern baldness than Caucasians cause they tend to produce less DHT in their bodies. That's actually what drugs like Propecia do -- they reduce the production of DHT.

Get on the drugs while you still can or prepare yourself for the razor.

I've been going bald very slowly for about 13 or 14 years.  I am at the point where I am considering shaving it all off, but my wife is being a bit of an ass about it and I'm not sure why.  I think she's afraid that I'll have one of those lumpy, misshapen heads (and she may be right).

I think some folks look at their mother's father. Donno if that's accurate or not, but maybe that'll make you feel better (or worse).

On my father's side is a history of male patten baldness, on my mothers, all the men in the family had/have plenty of hair. However, it skips a generation on my father's side - and my dad's the unlucky one. However, he receeded rather than went bald on top, and has never looked bad for it unless he lets it get Einstein length. My paternal grandfather died at 92 with a full head of snowy white hair, so that's not bad either (He also smoked a pipe since he was 12, so who can tell what it all means). My hair is black and kept long. I'm silvering at the temples, but so far no sign of receeding at 30, just the general thickness has gone down. I am considering dying to a dark cherry red (used to do it once in a while a few years ago) but this thread's kind of putting me off now, hah.

I'm set, grandad didn't even thin.  I know I didn't wind-up with Grandma's X, because I wasn't gray-haired by age 20.

My dim recollection from high school biology is that you get one of your mother's two X chromosomes, of which she got one from each of her parents.  So you have a 50% chance of having your mother's father's X chromosome, in which case you'll take after him for X-chromosomal traits, and a 50% chance of getting one of your mother's mother's X chromosomes.

If you have uncles on your mother's side, or great-uncles on your mother's mother's side, they're a good indicator of what you could be getting from your mother's mother.

My father had a two foot long combover for about 20 years. It was a scary thing.

Both my grandfathers were bald, so I knew it was coming. Never really worried about. I got fairly lucky and and never went completely bald on top, but there's not much there. I just wear it fairly short and honestly don't give a shit about what other people think of it.

I'm far more afraid of shaving my head than I am of people making fun of my bald spot.

Keep them short for the transition.  Keep them really short/shaved in the last stages.  I'm in transition and looking forward saving 30$ every 3 weeks.  I like the look, I don't see the point of trying to avoid it.

37 years old here, my hair started thinning in high school; by my freshman year of college I took to wearing a bandana around my head Al Jourgansan style to hide my receding line.  What do I have to say ~2 decades later? 

Fuck it, just shave that shit off.   Presuming you don't have any funny lumps or scars you will probably look just fine with a shaved head.  I see people who are my parents/grandparents age doing the comb over or the implants or the wigs and it is just so bloody obvious.  Socially things have changed, with *famous* people like Bruce Willis, Andre Agassi, Mr. Make It So Star Trek Captain, etc.  All just shaving or buzzing their heads, I think we are getting away from the stigma of being bald.   

Now, if I could have a full head of hair again, sure I would say yes to that, but it isn't going to happen, and I sure as hell am not going to blow $$ on trying to change that.

My experience has been out of sight out of mind.  If your head is shaved or buzzed with a #1 you really don't spend much time thinking about it other than "I better wear a hat when the sun is out".

Also, keep in mind that when you are in your twenties it might feel totally fucking devastating (it felt that way for me), but once you hit your 30's some of those people who gave you shit in when you were in your twenties are will be loosing their hair or going grey.  Seriously, I buzz my head with a pair of clippers once a week or so and it isn’t something I think about.

Women…. Because that is the underlying reason why we even think about this.   I am sure you have read it, and I am telling you it is true.   A full head of hair is far more important to the guy than it is to the girl.  Now, there are exceptions, and if you live in say Orange County, good luck to you.  But, generally speaking a guy is going to get way more worked up about hair loss than any prospective partner will.  Now rocking the Albert Einstein hairdo might be a bit much, but a close cropped head and you will look smooth, fashionable and aerodynamically correct.

So my advice, go buy a pair of clippers already.

I should also mention that I thought I had eye cancer back in June, because I found some pigmented spots on the white of my eyes.  :grin: i.e. I'm a borderline hypochondriac. I'll try to upload pics later though.

Hey I've got a question for y'all. Does baldness have to start at the crown, or can it start with a receding hairline in the front and just take over? I ask this because my hair seems fine on the top, but at the front...well it looks kinda like Ben Stiller in my avatar's hairline, and every day in the shower a few more strands come out in my hands.....

There are certainly different kinds.  Mine is more in the crown and a general thinning.  I have some recession, but that part isn't too terrible yet.

No way I would ever go back to having hair.  What a pain in the ass.  I can take a shower and be ready for work in 5 minutes now.  

I love being bald every time it rains. I can literally wipe my head dry with my hands.  Back in my teens when I had hair down to my waist, rain was the enemy. Fucking wet hair for hours.

I started going bald at 15, the above is exactly how I feel.  The only downside is, when you hit your head on something, you really hit your head.

I keep my hair cut short for much the same reason.  Take shower the night before, roll out of bed in the morning for work.  Taking care of longer hair sucks balls.

Yeah wish I could tell you "no no, you will be the exception" but it sounds like you are headed (does that qualify for a really bad pun?) down the road I went down.   Seriously though I think you will find down the road that it really isn't a big deal at all. 

My advice, when the time comes, buy a nice pair of hair clippers, buzz it down as low as you can get it, then if you want to bic it, do that in the shower and don't bother using shaving cream.   For some reason using shaving cream on your head to shave is a great way to get ingrown hairs, which look really really nasty on your scalp.  Oh and that isn't just my experience, multiple barbers told me that before I shaved my head.

I was in the same boat as Fraeg; it started in high school for me, though it wasn't really obvious (to others) until college.  I was pretty insecure about it for a while and did try propecia or something for a while.  I have no idea if it worked or not, but it sure as fuck made me stay insecure.  Checking the mirror a few times a day to see if you can see a difference?  Always wondering if other people are noticing?   :uhrr:

After about six months of that I said fuck it and shaved my head.  Like Fraeg said, something about taking control of it gets rid of the stigma of being bald, both to yourself and to others.  I'd never go back.  


It can go either way.  I got both at once.

As to shaving it, I use a Mach 3 a few times a week.  Since I don't need to be absolutely clean shaven for my job, I just do my face at the same time as my head.  My secret: Shaving cream is totally unncessary.  Hot water from a shower, followed by conditioner or even body wash when the head is wet is all you need.   Use a mirror, expect to nick yourself a fair deal when you're learning how to do it, and check yourself with a hand mirror to see if you missed any spots.  That's a little embarrassing.  

Honestly, I look better bald than I ever did with hair.  Even if you don't have a combover... we all know somebody who always wears a hat or bandana, combs their hair forward a bit too much, or whatever.  Don't be that guy.  That guy isn't happy.

Out of sight, out of mind is the key here.  Trying to maintain the illusion of having hair just leaves you unhappy and insecure.  Once you get used to how weird rain/wind/a shower feels on your scalp you won't look back.

I thought I would be bald by now,I have had the Ben Stiller hairline for as long as I can recall. But it does not appear to be receding further and nobody on either side of my family is bald. But then again it definitely exhibits the pattern of the first stage of that link.

Mine started in the front (but even as a kid I always had a high hairline) and I've now got a noticeable thinning spot on the crown of my head.  Getting to the point where I have to shave, but I'm going to grow a goat first.  If I'm bald without facial hair I look like a turtle.

Pretty sure I'm at II, or in between II and III at the moment. I expect I will move along through the other stages when the time comes as my hairline is closer to my mothers side (don't recall seeing a photo of her dad without some sort of baldness) than my fathers (94 year old grandfather still has all his hair). Pretty confident I'm not going to go bald on the crown before my receding hairline catches that point, so I'm hoping to go a bit more Larry David rather than have to shave my head. As long as it doesn't bother me I'm going to have as much fun with whatever hair I end up with, fuck shaving being the only option.

If you are truly dreading going bald, there's only a handful of things you can do: try to chemically prevent it, learn hide it or accept it.  And unfortunately there is no guarantee that prevention works for all people.  Those telling you to suck it up and just accept it are probably how you'll feel eventually if you do end up going bald.

I'd say you are going bald. The hair in the center is too narrow.

I'm not going bald, I'm going grey. I'm working the Reed Richards silver sides a little more each and every year. I think it's funny and don't really care but I turn 38 in November and accept that I'm getting old no matter how young I still feel. My brother, who is younger than me, is going bald. I think that's even more funny.

I have shaven my head twice in my life though. Once in my early 20's with the help of Uncle Sam; and once about six years ago when I just decided that I didn't fucking care enough to have hair. That lasted until 2009 when I decided to grow it out and see what was going to happen. It was more grey, but as thick as ever.

Been thinking about shaving it down again though; I can't find a barber worth a shit in my new town and I don't need a barber to shave it.

I'm older than you and jealous. I wish I could go white or silver. As a blond, it doesn't really work that way, it just kinda fades a bit (for most people, it's not showing in my hair yet). Maybe it's time to shave off the mane again. Losing 18" was great and I just feel odd without the beard (not to mention nobody knows how to properly cut men's long hair). I was actually hoping the beard might come back in white, since there was a lot of white appearing, but I'm seeing a lot of real dark stubble, dammit.

My fiancee has the coolest dark grey hair with silver shot through it and white that frames her face (she has a pixie cut I talked her into that looks amazing). So jealous. She hates getting old, though. Women.

I've been tempted in recent weeks to shave my head. I'm not losing my hair, but I dig the way a shaved head looks. My wife is absolutely against it though.  :heartbreak:

I freaked out in my early 20s, when my hair receded a bit.  I even started taking some Rogaine for a while because I was so scared.  But 15 years later, my hair is still the same - it never went beyond the initial recession.  From that chart, I'm at Class II.

Have you guys thought about hair transplants?  I know the technology has progressed past the obvious corn rows of the late eighties.  The doctor takes hair from the side of your head and then puts it on the top, plug by plug.

If through some horrible happenstance I'd forgo my own true self and decide to undergo said procedure I'm confident I'd feel indescribably violated in my manhood every time I look in the mirror. It's pretty much up there with buttock implants in my book.

Not that I'm taking glee in NOT beiing bald, but I think my problem was... itchy scalp. I literally was scratching hair out. I shaved my head again, and switched to that T-Gel stuff.. And my hair is growing thick like normal again, and not seeing even a strand come out during a wash. Anyone ever had that problem? I mean, everyone has dandruff every once in awhile, but that shit scared me. :grin: I don't think I'll be using any kind of shampoo except what's good for the scalp specifically. Healthy scalp means healthy hair.

Nah! What I heard about Head and Shoulders is that it makes you have even worse dandruff if you quit it. Some kind of chemical there that makes your head dependent on it. It's like crack. :grin:

Yeah, my dad used some crazy shit similar to T-Gel for years.. smells nasty.. But not as nasty as his. I think the % of tar is lower. Either way, it gets the job done.

When I reshaved my head, I did it with the lowest guard possible.. and it finally was obvious what my problem was. My scalp was literally red in places. That definitely can't be good for hair. I think whatever I was using before (in addition to dyeing too much) did a number on me.

Helllo, time to make an appointment with a dermatologist.

tgel makes my hair smell like creosote all day, no matter how well I rinse it. Nasty, nasty stuff.

I thought TGel made my hair smell like shit until I started using the prescription stuff. Now that stuff was foul.

Yeah, I can't go more than 2-3 days without washing my hair or it looks *really* nasty.

I use anti-frizz shampoo because my hair is wavy and almost completely uncontrollable without it. But yeah, 3 days without washing it and it looks like 1980's Nick Cave decided to deep-fry instead of back-comb. Something in the anti-frizz formula really gunks up your hair after 2 days.

I remember when I had hair. Man, those were the days.

I remember going 3 days between showers... Now, if I don't shower every morning, I spend the day with a greasy version of Cristopher Lloyd hair.

My greasy long hair period was precisely because of showers, I think.  :grin: Faulty water softener or something. Made my hair extra greasy/heavy.

Would you rather them talk about bald greasy heads?
