Title: The Surrogates
Post by: Venkman on August 31, 2009, 06:20:21 PM
Just saw a preview for The Surrogates (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0986263/synopsis), with Bruce Willis. Had no idea this was coming. Certainly would have remembered that retarded hairdo.

Really reminds me of the second book in Asimov's Robot Series: The Naked Sun, where the Solarians basically live their lives through their robots as a backdrop of an investigation. The movie looks to tend more towards the Matrix style of separation though.

Have no idea if it'll be any good, but I'll be seeing it at some point in a hotel, on DVD or on a flight.

Saw this preview before District 9 and the first thing that popped into my head was Kiln People by David Brin.

But now that you mention it, The Naked Sun seems to fit the plot line better.

I've been interested in this one since I saw a trailer. Probably will wait for DVD though.

Ooooooh, i like the premise! Will certainly have to watch this once it's out.

Also, Bruce Willis with Hitler Jugend hair

Wow, Rosamund Pike looks very attractive there.

Yea, I always feel like his hair becomes the major plot device, like Soloman's hair or something: dumb Bruce Willis goes through some transformation, ditches the do, goes the way we all expect a Bruce Willis character to go.

Only exception so far seems to be Fifth Element. But that's ok :-)

The first thing I did after watching 'Termination Salvation' was look up who the writers were, that movie had some of the worst writing known to man.

Turns out the two gentlemen who wrote 'Termination Salvation' also wrote 'The Surrogates', I don't possibly see how it could be any good.

Jeezus. I totally forgot about that one. Which then made me think of The Jackal...

bleh, nevermind. Theory shot.

1) Create a hypothetical technology.
2) Take it illogical extremes.
3) Things go badly.
4) You have a techo-phobic parable.

I didn't think it was so bad. Passable entertainment, I guess. Better than "The 6th Day" (Schwartzneggar clone movie) at least, which follows the same formula as tazelbain points out above.

I think the "hypothetical tech" in this one is somewhat more believable and humorous though. People do this shit already on the net.

My brother mentioned he'd seen this and warned against it, but said it was quite amusing to see complete unknowns playing the "surrogates" of famous actors, and vice-versa. Other than that he said the plot was senseless and meandering, and the action didn't rescue it.

Hmm... Umm.. I don't remember any unknowns playing well knowns. There are hot surrogates though which turn out to be sick fat bastards wasting away in their homes. Which is a bit like WoW or Second-Life.

Bruce Willis' surrogate is the German tupee version. He ends up getting tired of it and going back to real life, weary, bald headed Bruce.
