Title: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: schild on August 31, 2009, 01:37:15 AM So we did one last year. But since I've moved, I figure other people's desks have changed also.
Note: The only thing I cleaned off were my keys and my wallet. My desk space stays really goddamn clean these days, except for that spot to the left of the printer that's covered in dust. I call it the elephant graveyard and no one ever goes there. It's not safe. (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/39720/f13/desk09_00.png) Clockwise: Well, everything here is relatively obvious. The keyboard is a custom model M that is not done. When it is, it'll look like the one from Portal. I thought about selling them here, but I'm lazy. On the far right is the proof of Nythrax, which I have about 20 pages left to edit my way through. The monitors are: 21, 26 & 24. A PS3 is behind the 24 incher. (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/39720/f13/desk09_01.png) This is to the right of my desk on a much shorter table. Clockwise: Computer, NAS, DVDs I'm currently copying to the NAS & my G1, Sony HTS-100 Receiver, ipod touch & dock, bunch of hard drives, and half-working inkjet printer. Hanging between the printer and the computer is my etyBLU bluetooth headset, charging. Pardon the dust. I could take a picture of work, but it's just 2 monitors, an XPS 13 and a Macbook Pro. Not very exciting. The wallpaper isn't even attractive nor interesting. Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: FatuousTwat on August 31, 2009, 06:00:32 AM Is that diet cream soda? The normal stuff is too sweet already, I don't know how you could stand it with the fake sweetener.
Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: NiX on August 31, 2009, 06:12:15 AM The contrast between this desk and the one you had in Phoenix is astonishing. What the hell happened in between here and there?

The normal stuff is too sweet already, I don't know how you could stand it with the fake sweetener. Barely sweet at all, that's how. I don't do "sweet" soda.Quote The contrast between this desk and the one you had in Phoenix is astonishing. What the hell happened in between here and there? Well, my desk when I left Phoenix was twice the size of the one I have now, as such, I had to make due with less space here. I can't really get away with keeping shit all over it anymroe. Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: SnakeCharmer on August 31, 2009, 09:23:28 AM That 21" looks out of place. You should buy my 24" to properly bookend that 26"
Man. I miss being able to smoke at my computer sometimes. But holy hell did I smoke waaaay to much. Plus it made the house smell like wet ass. Offscreen to the left is a docking station w/ a dell laptop. Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: Yoru on August 31, 2009, 01:59:56 PM My desk lately has been my dining table. Last year's Macbook Pro sitting front and center with my cheap little cellphone on the left, not currently charging. The charger's off by the couch, not pictured. Behind it is a wooden bowl containing 1 kg of food-grade salt, one potato, and two onions. Further back is a freshly-purchased roll of paper towels, too thick to fit on my paper towel holder - also not pictured.
Way in the back is the little window looking out from my dining area onto the harbor. And the view through that window behind the table shows clouds creeping over the mountain north of town, plus the retail/warehousing development down by the old harbor. In the foreground is some dude driving home and a bus stop. Exciting times! Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: IainC on August 31, 2009, 02:51:34 PM Here's mine
Warhammer Armies: Dwarfs, random change in 4 currencies (Pounds Sterling, US Dollars, Euros and Swiss Francs), Dawn of War II, a big mug of tea, World in Conflict demo disc, a random USB hub, driver disck for my wireless network card and the speakers and breakout box for my 6.1 sound system. My wife's desk is the one behind and you can see the back of her monitor and a pack of stroopwafels that need to go back downstairs. The mesh on the floor to the left is the lightwell that lets sunlight from the window on the landing filter down to the dining room directly below. Edit: huge picture Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: Lanei on August 31, 2009, 03:56:19 PM This is not even half as cluttered as it was a few months ago, but also not half as clean as the next day after that.
The laptop and second monitor on it belong to my employer. I love my commute. Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: Ookii on August 31, 2009, 04:35:09 PM Remember guys, if you have more than one computer Synergy (http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/) is your friend.

I used Synergy for years. But due to numerous bugs and the fact that development on it halted in 2006, I eventually switched to Input Director (http://www.inputdirector.com), which I found to be more stable and suitable for my uses (gaming!). A potential downside of Input Director is that it's Windows-only, but since I only use Windows (Win7+XP) that wasn't a problem for me.Will post my desktop when I get home from work =P Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: Nebu on September 01, 2009, 09:42:51 AM I have the side off of my case because my vid card runs hot. Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: RhyssaFireheart on September 02, 2009, 09:29:17 AM I tried using one of those balls to sit on at the desk for a while, but I could never get close enough to sit at the desk properly. I really did want to use it because I thought it would help my bad posture. I tend to lean forward in my chair with my elbows on the desk and that ends up being hard on the front wheel of my chair (gone trhough 2 of them this year already, yay for replacement parts!).
So what's the secret to actually managing to sit at your desk on one of those balls? Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: Cyrrex on September 02, 2009, 09:32:08 AM So what's the secret to actually managing to sit at your desk on one of those balls? Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: IainC on September 02, 2009, 09:55:32 AM Iain, I have to ask; why is there a cave wall in your house? My house is awesome. It's about 400 years old and that wall is about two feet of packed stone covered in plaster. This means my apartment is cosy in the winter and nice and cool in the summer. There are similar surfaces at the back of the apartment where the building is part of the city walls. Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: apocrypha on September 02, 2009, 10:10:29 AM Earth & Beyond original box and 8 copies of WoW. Your back is always active and upright, your arms don't rest on the desk and your legs are constantly active too. It's actually pretty comfortable once you get used to it, but never so comfortable that you can forget about keeping your muscles engaged. You're basically balanced on the ball using your legs to stop yourself falling off it :p Oh, and you need the right sized ball and right height desk. We are very conservative; the IT guys with the foosball table and giant inflatable Batman have been sacked. I do have some weird crap, though. You can't see some of my trinkets due to my laptop bag on the left, such as the gold-painted Mr. Potato Head which I earned due to some sort of grievous mishap I perpetrated, plus two other potato heads which appeared from somewhere. The Bendy Elvis is visible, the lucky golden cat is harder to see, the Septim is hard to see (THE EMPIRE IS LAW THE LAW IS SACRED), the Ordinator is barely visible. But yea, no booze or GIT-R-DONE posters. The cardboard box and the chrome-trimmed tray is the CD/DVD Repository for The Coca-Cola Company. Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: IainC on September 02, 2009, 10:36:56 AM Iain has a very cool place, if I remember the exterior. On all that open desk space I have two monitors and a keyboard and whatever spec I am working from. On the shelving are reference books and a space for my Vault 101 bobblehead, one of those large (12"?) Star Wars Snowtroopers from 10 years ago or so and my Aperture Science coffee mug. Oh and some plastic models from the rapid prototyping lab. It's incredibly professional and utterly boring, I would take a picture but no cameras are allowed in the building. I have one to exercise with (when I use it) and I actually like just sitting on it occasionally. My problem is how to get the ball at the desk in the proper spot, then to sit on said ball and be seated at the desk correctly. Make sense? Maybe it's because I freely admit to being a fat chick, but I can't seem to end up close enough to the desk to do any work once I've gotten seated on the ball. Ahh gotcha. I'd guess you need a higher desk, but I can see how it would be difficult if you're well built. We've thought about springing for nicer tables, but then we realized we've been using those tables for almost 10 years, why get rid of 'em now? I also love the clamps on your bookshelf. Exactly. The tables pictured are over nine years old, still working great. They even have nice rubber boots on the feet so they don't scratch up the floor. Got a few extras folded up in the garage for when there's a need for tabletop gaming or projects or whatnot. The clamps are temporary -- the small bookshelf is sitting on a slightly unlevel bit of floor and really needs to be shimmed a bit to sit straight alongside the neighboring shelves. I didn't have anything suitable for that, but did have some C clamps. Good enough for the time being. I have room for one more (small) shelving unit along that wall, and need to anchor the shelves to the wall so they are less likely to fall on me and kill me in the event of an earthquake. The company survived for 10 years mostly by being absurdly frugal. Most of my hardware was hand-me-down stuff. Nobody ever threw out a machine unless it was unbootably dead and only after it was scavenged for any useful parts. I wish I had some pictures of the carpeting in the 800 building. It was filthy.
The machines there are a dual PIII (under the desk), my primary "high end" workstation, bebox (on the shelf), for serial debug (it had four serial ports) and because I hacked on the bootloader at times, an x86 test box, a 486 with a SCSI bus analyzer (back right), and an old beat-up mac clone for ppc (far right) testing. That is indeed a matrix screensaver. The chair at work now is a used aeron that I brought from the startup when we got bought. Sadly, the right arm broke off the other day. Google provides okay chairs, but usually not that nice. Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: Yegolev on September 10, 2009, 08:03:47 AM Hooray for chair-retention. I inherited a cush manager-grade leather chair from someone when he left the company and have hung onto it for a while now. I like it more than the Aerons people get around here, partly because I don't have to take the ergo class but mostly because my leather chair is very plush and leans back like a mini-recliner. I wish I could figure out how to steal it; I don't expect to be sitting in it much longer.

I was stopped by physical security and the box was examined, the security console was called, I was informed I needed to fill out an asset removal form which I could get from my manager, and eventually they decided to let me go after my shocked expression, confession of ignorance due to taking actual company property out many times over ten years (including boxes of hard disks and entire servers), and my unstoppable charm.
The topper to this was when the security guard had said I could take my box out, she commiserated with me and said things are different around here now (she was forced to turn contractor recently), and would be even more different a month from now; I agreed with her completely, then she says "Yeah, you might come back and drive your car through the front glass and take all kinds of stuff, we wouldn't be able to stop you." I pointed out, on the record, that I would never do anything like that, then took my box and hurried out. It's like the fucking Titanic except there's no Billy Zane. JUST LET ME TAKE MY COMFORTABLE SEATING DEVICE. GAWD. Quote Come on, I'm sure other people have site security besides me and Murgos. My building has a 22 year old I've caught sleeping at the desk. Austin is a little... relaxed. Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: Quinton on September 11, 2009, 09:28:33 AM Come on, I'm sure other people have site security besides me and Murgos. Google has 30-ish buildings in Mountain View and we certainly have a security team -- good folks, our blue shirts. But it's still a silicon valley tech company that wants to believe it'll be a startup forever and nobody interrogates you if you take a box of crap out to your car. Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: Rasix on September 11, 2009, 09:46:43 AM Come on, I'm sure other people have site security besides me and Murgos. All site security does is check badges (visible check only) upon driving in. All over the place there are pallets of laptops, non GA'd equipment worth thousands of dollars, boxes of tapes/HDDs, etc. Security would likely only say something if they were called on you. I haven't physically seen a security person that wasn't at a road entrance in months. Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: Righ on September 11, 2009, 09:48:32 AM Besides all that, I'd never be able to wheel a leather chair out of here even in the best of times. Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: Yegolev on September 11, 2009, 09:51:06 AM Well, no one interrogated me about taking Obvious Server Hardware out of the building for ten years... things can change.
Bet you can take your chair out once everyone is fired. Just be there on the last day. Things are far more organized than that, major corporations don't just let people go on some random day. Fridays are preferred and there is always extra security on hand to clamp down on bullshit. The last day would be the absolute worst day to pull something, which is why I'm getting my stuff out now so I don't have to carry a lot of shit out at once. You should have come visit me when you had the chance, it's like going through the airport to get in here except you are harassed by security if they find you unescorted. Throw it through a window, then walk nonchalantly past security and go and collect it. I like how you think, except I can't throw it across the loading dock into the parking deck. Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: Righ on September 11, 2009, 09:54:11 AM Throw it through a window, then walk nonchalantly past security and go and collect it. I like how you think, except I can't throw it across the loading dock into the parking deck. That's because you spend too much time sitting in a plush executive chair and have grown fat and lazy. Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: Yegolev on September 11, 2009, 09:58:21 AM I'd like to meet the guy who could toss this chair up two stories and laterally 70 feet. Then again, I might crash the loading dock. Or drive in through the front windows into the lobby, like the security guard suggested.

Just get a spork and a sharpened toothbrush and dig a tunnel imo. Fourth floor. :awesome_for_real: Injure yourself at work and use the chair to wheel yourself to the car. "Yeah, it looks silly, but I've got to reach my vehicle." They'll be too confused to worry about the chair. On-site medical. They'd wheel me over to the company doc. Organise a 'chair race' for your last day, design the course so that it goes out of the facility and close to where you have left your car. Has legs! Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: Segoris on September 11, 2009, 11:03:33 AM Get 10 people and hold races out the door, right past security

Have Fedex deliver the packing materials, box it up and arrange for them to pick it up the day after you leave. Have it delivered to your boss' home address during the day with instructions to leave it at the door, then drive round there and pick it up.
Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: Signe on September 11, 2009, 02:02:35 PM Bring in a bit of personal stuff every day for a while. Eventually, you can fill out a form to remove your personal effects and use the chair to take it all out to your car. They'll probably just think of the chair as a vehicle to get it to your car. If you time it during a security shift change, no one will be the wiser. Well, unless there's a murder or something in the parking lot and they review the security tapes. Of course, anyone who would steal a chair would probably commit murder. I would NEVER steal a chair!

Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: Teleku on September 11, 2009, 10:21:58 PM Man, I need to hurry up and get a job at a real live major silicon valley corporation! I only get to read about this stuff. I work at a small software company in Berkeley. I could walk out the front door with the fucking server and nobody would notice. We'll shut down the entire customer support section on a whim for an hour or two to run out for pizza and beer. We not only have chair races, but chair jousting tournaments, all the while shouting insults at the most annoying company owners we have to deal with who use our product.
Of course, I'm pretty sure my pay grade is nowhere near what you assholes make, which is why I really do need to hurry up and get the fuck out of here to corporate land. :awesome_for_real: Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: Yegolev on September 12, 2009, 01:09:59 PM Of course, anyone who would steal a chair would probably commit murder. Title: Re: Post Your Desk - The 2009 Edition Post by: Broughden on September 15, 2009, 11:05:46 AM Actually, yesterday I put a lot of personal effects in a cardboard box (invalidating the previous picture) and tried to walk out to my car. I passed my manager in the elevator well later and told him about it, and he was obviously new to this particular process. Things around here are pretty much Opposite Land from just a few years ago, nevermind back in the 1990s. Besides all that, I'd never be able to wheel a leather chair out of here even in the best of times. Way too obvious. Can I ask? Where do you work? ie which company? Are they going under or just shutting down that office location?
