Title: Starcraft 2 Map Editor
Post by: Nonentity on August 24, 2009, 12:00:01 PM

This video shows the sort of amazing stuff that you can do with the SC2 map editor - weld units onto other units, modify terrain in realtime, make a third-person shooter (with mouselook), make a custom UI, or a top down shooter.

As a custom map aficionado, this is literally a wet dream.

Would rather Diablo 3 ship with such a robust map editor. Just saying.

Coincidentally, Blizzard announced at Blizzcon that modders will be able to sell the maps they create:

I'm announcing that I'll be able to torrent maps for SCII.

I'm fine with paying for maps as long as they are good.

I easily spent way more time in DotA than I have a lot of other full retail products. Let them get their money's worth.

Man, is that even allowed?

It's like in Demolition Man, when ALL the restaurants are Taco Bell.

All of our PC games are going to be StarCraft 2.

They can do whatever they want, as long as I get my third/first person DotA.

Though I do wish they'd focus less on the object editor and GUI scripting and more on Galaxy scripting.

An over-the-shoulder DoTA-style game would be interesting.

DotA controlled like an FPS or even an MMO would be divine. Click-to-move ftl.

Last-hitting creep in an fps? Dear god no.

Admittedly, this raises the stock of Star Craft 2 in my eyes significantly.

That looks pretty cool.

Although that's kinda neat, I think I'd rather play SC than a crummy third-person shooter that's implemented as a custom SC map.

Depends on how well the engine is able to handle it, really.

If it can do it fairly proficiently, it really only matters on how well scripted the map is. I've seen the Warcraft 3 engine pushed pretty hard with some maps. One of my favorites was a roguelike done on the WC3 engine, complete with randomizing terrain and whatnot.

The problem is, that advanced stuff is done with the scripting language, not the object or trigger editor. SC2's new scripting language is Galaxy, and it 'needs' to be robust and well-documented. However, Blizzard know that people like me are in the minority, and will focus on the editor tools instead. Hell, they've only just now fixed the crashes generated in the WC3 editor when JASS fails to compile correctly.

Ultimately it's probably a moot point, since Blizzard games are popular enough that someone will do something similar with SC2 as with WC3 - hack the editor and make a pre-processor to fix the bugs. I'm just bitter...  :heartbreak:

If we can view the scripts for the game itself people will get it documented even if Blizzard doesn't.

Edit: will

Galaxy Script, is that a Lua-implementation?

Edit:
Sorry, found it. "The editor features a proprietary scripting language called Galaxy based on C."

Of course you had to invent your own shitty feature-starved language. Why use EcmaScript, Lua, Python, Ruby or any other tested or atleast semi-established language that's available?
