I've heard its "in" now to hate on Tim Burton.  I saw this trailer a month ago and I've been excited about it ever since.

I don't know if it's *In*, but I've hated Burton for a long time.

Imagine a rock musician who always wrote with the three same chords.  Ok a lot do that.  But Burton regardless seems to have a pretty small, tiny, visual vocabulary.  Every film looks the same.  Literally.  Just sometimes the stories may vary a little.

When I saw the opening scene I immediately thought of Edward Scissorhands.

I thought of Nightmare Before Christmas when I saw the trailer, which is TOTALLY DIFFERENT!

I'm with you, Hoax.  This looks like a good watch.

I'm not fond of burton's three chords but he's just a producer on this one in any case.  I do think while seemingly familiar that this will be a fun movie to watch.

I watched a short movie that was ... uh, this.

I have no idea what it was in front of. Maybe a pixar film? Maybe here? I dunno. It was like 10m long.

Burton or no Burton, it sure has promise.

This was a short film in 2005. You can watch it here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IQcMeNh7Hc). I think was posted here somewhere. Really good and was nominated for an Academy Award for short film. Made the rounds in film festivals and in the shorts compliations of nominees likely.

The same guy is making the feature. I don't find it all that Burtonian when you watch it at length and hopefully Acker got to put his personal stamp on things.

I actually forgot about this movie (first saw a preview 3 months and got excited) but now there is a barrage of commercials on TV, and I'm even more stoked,  This looks pretty sweet.

So the movie is great.  Ambiance and visual are top notch.  The story is a letdown.

Ditto, even with the story though I enjoyed it.

Looks great, great mood, solid if stock characterization, weak-to-broken story. (If you think for even a second about the plotline of the film, you'll realize that it makes no sense whatsoever.)

It's easy to see why Tim Burton likes Acker, since they're pretty much dopplegangers as creators: great visual artists, (often if not always) bad storytellers. I'm hoping Acker reaches out for a second mentor, someone who really knows how to make a narrative work.

Saw this last night.  Mostly agree with what's been said, although I'm giving the story the benefit of the doubt and trying to puzzle out a way that it makes sense.   :awesome_for_real:

I spent some time mulling the story over afterwards, and no matter how I worked it, I couldn't make sense out of it.

I'm probably just overthinking it and giving too much credit to the writers for making something that's vaguely coherent, but I feel better about appreciating the flashy visuals if I can pretend they're hanging off some sort of logical narrative framework.

Well, that works a bit, especially the idea about the Machine modifying itself (maybe it found its creator's room, knows his plan, and is determined to head it off.)

But

I didn't go into any logical complain in my original comment because  the movie is not even close to a possible explanation.  I watched it like I would watch an Hensel and Gretel movie.

Well, anyway, yeah, A+ for visuals and mood. Definitely excuses some narrative failures. This time. But I am really hoping he tells his buddy Tim to stay away from the production room for the next time around.

Wow, you guys have given more thought to the plot than the producers did, and way more than I did. A resounding meh.

THAT is what makes a Tim Burton movie a Tim Burton movie. Has he ever told a story with a clean logical narrative? I can't figure out why he keeps doing standalone movies. He should be an sfx company.
