I'm going to have to buy this one tonight or tomorrow I think.  Looks like a lot of fun from some of the videos I've seen.  Anyone else picking it up?

At worst, me, Ard, and Sauced will be picking it up. I imagine Rattran will. Cory probably will too. I'll make Phildo pick it up whether he wants to or not. Moaner has no excuse either.

I AM ENTERTAINED.

So yeah, I'm in.  I've got another non-f13 friend picking it up tonight.

I expect I will follow usual form by buying it but not playing it.  Like My Life as a Dark Lord and Left4Dead.

Title: Re: Fat Princess
Post by: schild on July 30, 2009, 12:37:02 PM
My Life as a Dark Lord is a terrible tower defense game and shameless cash-in on My Life as a King's name.

Unacceptable imo.

Fat Princess otoh is awesome.

I hope they patch in local co-op or something.  Game is fun in single player.  But the online is frustrating since it seems broken.

When you get into game, it's a lot of fun.  I really hope they add in multiplayer split screen online.  Having to switch off with my wife as is right now.

It seems like people don't understand Socialism. Everyone keeps running around trying to be a hero instead of focusing on one task for the team. Several times the princess was easily retaken because no one bothered to fatten her up. Being a worker isn't as glamorous a storming the enemy castle, but that catapult ain't build itself.  :uhrr:

I wish I had recorded the best BF1942 match I ever participated in. Half of each team was on the runway waiting for a plane to spawn (so they could shoot each other to get it and shoot at it when someone else got it), the other half were snipers trying to snipe the plan campers.

Title: Re: Fat Princess
Post by: Sauced on August 03, 2009, 10:26:18 AM
I had a fantastic time playing lots this weekend, and all I needed was five fucking minutes of patience to get a match.

Anyway, I did seem to get stuck on the "new kids" team just about every time out.  This manifests itself in a couple of ways, with the usual pickup group problems inherent to multiplayer games, and some added fun based on the game mechanics.

Each map has a slight shift to the basic fundamental approach that each player should be taking, regardless of whatever role they want to play.  The best way to insure victory is to have everyone understand this.  And guess what - they don't.  For example, on the Boat Map, the lack of Gates, Springs, and Ladders, means that Workers who gather resources after all of the units have been upgraded are doing nothing but lazily pad their point totals.  They might think they are helping, but they aren't.  Now, if they want to run around as a Worker throwing bombs at people, that's good clean fun.

And speaking of class upgrades, the trick to Fat Princess (well, this and understanding the minor tactical shifts on each map) is that the upgrades are not "better" - they are functionally "different".  Most players I seem to get teamed up with do not understand this (or refuse to accept it).  The warrior and ranger upgrades are for battling large groups, for example, and should be switched back to sword/bow in any 1-on-1 situation.  Playing a Dark Priest and never switching to Heal mode makes you a complete Asshole.  And so on.

Wait 5 minutes and play with me god damnit.

It's out in EU too, but I'll pick it up when I come back from holiday, with maybe some patching added. So what's the verdict: a blast?

Title: Re: Fat Princess
Post by: Dtrain on August 03, 2009, 10:52:45 AM
I particularly like how tactics can be exploited in a variety of ways, but there always seems to be a ready counter, which usually seems to emphasize more and better teamwork.

Example:
At first I thought mage bombing was the best thing EVAR. Then I found some opposing teams that did it with 3 or 4 mages at once. As a result, I started using the priest area heal spell (which I had previously thought to be a little lame in comparison to the single target.) So far I haven't seen many opposing AE heal strats in effect, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

I've been playing solo online (12 slot game with 11 friend slots) to work on some trophies. I gotta say the references to sir mix-a-lot are comical in the help tips not mentioning the whole song in game credits  :drill:

I picked this up, hell of a lot of fun.  things i've noticed:

1. starting a game seems better then trying to join one (at least until they patch it)
2. the longer you hold down your aoe the greater the effect (was not obvious to me at first)
3. the shadowpriest's AOE is almost crucial for getting a princess successfully (especially if charged to max)

It seems like developers don't understand Gamers.  They keep creating games where they expect the Gamer to spontaneously choose the class that is needed rather then the class that they would like to play or the class that seems so darn cool.  To make matters worse, the developer almost belligerently discourages players from playing a class that might be cool by creating a class description that makes it even more unlikely that anyone with a brain would like to spend their ENTERTAINMENT time playing.  After all, it's too much effort to be creative and give the support character some pizzaz.  For instance, instead of calling a class that is responsible for defense a "drone" or "worker", why not instead call him the "evil overlord" and make his character look cooler then all the others?

Is this so fucking hard?!

Giving the drone a bee's head and the ability to fly would be a start.

Had a good 4 win night last night.  Using the D-Pad to issue commands actually worked, people just started following me after a bit of persistent "Help!  Help me!".

I never play mages (fucking ice whores), instead grabbing whatever hat appears to be needed at the moment.  It does seem that the game spawns you near a needed hat, or on the opposite side of the castle from the hat you were playing?  Haven't quite figured it out yet, but it is certainly doing *something*.

I love camping a tower when it gets too hectic to harvest. If you back off from the edge just a little bit you can lob your bombs down on enemies trying to take the tower by hiding at the bottom. Also, your bombs will break off resources, so you can prep your harvesting if you can't get close - it's just a little tricky getting the aim right.

I don't know why console network code is so clownshoes. This and Castle Crasher must be contending for the Greatest Game Fucked Up By Worst Networking award.

Warhawk on PS3 suffering from this made me return the game in anger.

Yeah, I got my $15 out of it in the last 2 hours.  Anything past this point is gravy.  Didn't see much in the way of the connection issues, three minutes to start a game wasn't terrible.  Maybe I got lucky tonight.

Having the same connection issues in the EU too, which is a shame because this is awesome amounts of fun  :why_so_serious:

Fixes coming (http://titanstudios.com/blog/2009/08/update-from-titan-fixes-coming/) apparently.

Maybe i'm just lucky (knocks on wood) but i've had not connection issues so far and it takes me *maybe* 2 mins to connect...

Although it does seem to me that the opposing teams runs at warp speed, which concerns me.

Title: Re: Fat Princess
Post by: Segoris on August 05, 2009, 09:21:49 AM
I was also only having 2-3 min wait times. There was only once that I received a message along the lines of a being 'unable to connect to this server at this time' type of message.

No experience with the other team walking any faster or slower then I was though.

Title: Re: Fat Princess
Post by: apocrypha on August 05, 2009, 09:44:07 AM
I've managed to join 2 games out of about 20 attempts. Every time it goes through the "Requesting Game Info.... Connecting To Host....." for 2-3 minutes then dumps me back at the main menu with a message the there was "a problem connecting to the host".

Oh and in one of the games I managed to join someone was cheating like a mofo - running around as a giant chicken 1-shotting (1-pecking?) everyone? Other than those minor problems it's great  :awesome_for_real:

Sucks about your connection luck. As for the giant chicken, was it after the game had ended while waiting for the next round? If so that is what happens to the person with the top score of the losing team. They turn into a giant chicken, while the top score of the winning team turns into a grim reaper. Killing the chicken or the reaper makes them drop an egg or some item (can't remember what it was) that turns whoever picks it up into the chicken or the reaper. This transformation lasts until the next round starts.

Title: Re: Fat Princess
Post by: Dtrain on August 05, 2009, 10:36:12 AM
The reaper is all well and good, but the chicken thing is a great way to feel better about putting out a great effort when your team let you down. GIANT. CHICKEN. 1 PECK. 1 KILL. (??!?!?!!) Just look at how it damaged the psyche of apocrypha.

Title: Re: Fat Princess
Post by: schild on August 05, 2009, 10:37:28 AM
Whenever I want to rack up points, I drop a chicken bottle on myself and peck around the gate. Instead of points for each kill, you get points for each hit. Also, achievements are unlocked by killing with a chicken. I'm getting pretty good with it.

Hehe no, it was all through a game. The guy had the title "King" and had over 7000 points by the end of the round while everyone else had <1000. There was definite shenanigans.

They pushed a small 13mb patch, not sure what it did.

Got into a game at 8 tonight, played till 12 without interruption.  Maybe it's fixed.  Haven't had this much fun in a game in a very, very long time.  Playing a priest is super fun, but I sometimes ninja build the upgrade and get yelled at.  Thing is, I'm nearly always top spot on points if I have access to dark priest for 1v1 situations.

Yeah, pretty sure it's mostly fixed now.  Patch notes on their blog.  I got into a game first try after the patch, after a week of virtually no luck.

Not saying Fat Princess isnt a fun game, it is, but really now.

Demon's Souls is the best reason to buy a PS3, yes. Without question. Probably the best reason to buy any system ever. I'm not sure if that's good for the PS3 or if it says more about previous consoles. /shrug.

Had the problems a few times too playing with a friend(he was hosting) where the catapult wouldn't trigger. I'd stand on it and jump in various areas and it wouldn't register. He walked over with me still on it and jump and trigger it fine launching us both into battle. He stopped the game and started a new one and the issue was all cleared up, go figure.

Late to the party, I know, but I just picked this up.  It's really fun.

Surprisingly enough, I get a game within a minute or two.  No waiting.

Online play is smoother now and one of the features in the latest (free) patch is local play for four players on one screen.  Which really should have been part of release.  This helps in finding full games although I can't find people playing the capture the flag version.

The paid DLC adds maps (the newer maps are free from an older patch, haven't played in a while) classes have injected life into the game, most of which is evading pirate cannonball explosions. :/

I bought the addon and played a bit this morning... got into games fast but sadly had to turn off chat because it was a little too gansta for my taste.  Occasionally I forget why I don't like people, then I'm around them and I remember.  Game's great, muted.
