I disliked their last couple albums (and I own everything they ever released).

Seemed like they just went and turned into a gimmicky death metal band instead of the ecclectic satirical metal they were doing in the 90s.

I briefly dated a GWAR fan. We knew it wasn't going to work out when GWAR and Tool were both in town playing different shows (Aenima era). I went to see Tool, she went to see GWAR.

It was interesting afterwords, though. She had been naked on stage in some meatgrinder thing or something that covered her in swirls of multicolored paint that lasted for a couple days. It was pretty cool.

You have never been to a GWAR show?

Other shows won't be the same after you do.

After reflection I just can't find this stuff enjoyable, I honestly don't get what you guys see in it.

They're not a group I listen to on a daily basis, but I've seen them a few times.  Best was in 94 or 95 at Harpo's in Detroit.  It was the day before Halloween and everyone was dressed for a costume party there... except the skinheads.  Totally fun show, I was blue from head to toe for a day and my buddy got hit on the neck and shoulder with fake shit from a priest's bum.  The priest they sodomized onstage, of course.   :awesome_for_real:

Was fun till the skinheads got nasty in the pit... we had to make a hasty exit after my bud got a good solid punch in one of their faces.  

That said, I'd pick Tool over them anyday.  But it's an experience.  

EDIT:  I was blue because they spray the audience in the pit area with all kinds of crazy shit.  I think I had some yellow and red too, somewhere.  I just remember my Tool tshirt I wore was stained blue permanently.

I am a huge GWAR fan on many levels. I would not pick tool over GWAR, GWAR are Rock gods, to Rock gods.

GWAR was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Circa 1992 at the old 9:30 Club.  Serious lulz.

Gwar is inspired, talented, intellectually daring, not to mention playful and yet, I do not think I will ever be tempted to buy an album. They are sorta like Frank Zappa. Behind the goof there is a talent for music, but its still too much goof (for me).

One of the things I have always liked is the political and social commentary laced within just about everything, and they have a habit of commenting on world events of the time as well.

Hmm? I don't think I would ever put Gwar and FZ in any category together. Gwar are teenage potty humor in WWE costumes with basic three chord faux-metal riffing. FZ's humor could be pretty banal and crude at times, but it was always framed by music that was complex and highly progressive (in terms of innovation, not genre).

Have you listed to all of GWARs past work? Because the potty humor is only the surface stuff (See my other post, or one of the numerous albums for the larger meanings). As far as three cords, they have done (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYCSt8dA8Q8) just about every genre I can think of over the 25 years (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPZ4hsLraUA), while they do have the GWAR sound, they have experimented (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVjnPadDWLc), a lot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3vxMI0Kv2U). A good deal of GWARs music is quite complex (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6csT5CPWOl0), and has always (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HLhn3-nhG0) been progressive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXOTKl-iPQQ). I have a few fans that love them some zappa, and they also appreciate GWAR very much for some of the same reasons.

Of course, sometimes, music just doesn't have to have a larger meaning than  :rock_hard: I think Engels description was well put.

I liked Gwar better when they were just a hardcore band out of W Virginia.  That said, their stage shows are pretty impressive.  Especially when most of the shows I see consist solely of some mopey tits standing stock still on stage playing note for note renditions of their latest cd.

That's amazing since Gwar, as a band, was never a punk band out of West Virginia. Death Piggie was born in Richmond also.

Anyway, yes, one of my tests or qualifications of any band is the performance sounding just like the studio versions (with live variations due to stage goings on). They get an A+ for this.

One of my tests is the performance sounding better than the album, and if they can completely change the song around, even better. I have albums, I don't need to see someone play it note-for-note, might as well lip-sync it. Going to see someone like the Allmans, where you never know what you're going to get is a true concert experience. They don't need some cheesy gimmicks to put on a good show.

I consider Cher to be a cheesy gimmick!
