Title: Newpaper Post by: Tale on July 03, 2009, 09:25:27 AM Headline printed in Murdoch newspaper The Australian on an article by the CEO of Murdoch's company News Ltd.
(http://users.on.net/~svandore/pics/newpapers.jpg) It may be epic fail, but I suspect it is epic win by an unhappy sub-editor - they are undervalued and overworked. Title: Re: Newpaper Post by: Raging Turtle on July 03, 2009, 09:55:46 AM Well, grammar is my thing, not punctuation, and I'm setting myself up here... but what's wrong with that? Newspaper is plural and possessive in that sentence, therefore the apostrophe should be at the end. Similar to "The boys' fathers are playing cards".
Or maybe death should be singular, since it's talking about the industry as a whole? It's an awkward sentence but I don't see the fail. "Complacency, not the internet, is the enemy of the printed paper, but quality journalism will prevail" fake edit: as I was typing that out I realized the whole article might be a joke. Seriously, who puts that many commas in a sentence? Title: Re: Newpaper Post by: IainC on July 03, 2009, 10:17:11 AM The first line underneath is the best. Seriously, who puts that many commas in a sentence? French people. Seriosuly, whenever I got text that had come from translation in France, I'd have to rewrite it so that it had half the number of words but double the number of sentences. Title: Re: Newpaper Post by: Signe on July 03, 2009, 10:30:25 AM Sometimes I use too many commas. I always feel bad for people who read my posts, too. It's real. That's really what was printed: http://mumbrella.com.au/with-newspapers-youre-wrong-forever-7334 By the way, the use of commas in the article is correct English. Read the sentence aloud: Complacency (pause) not the internet (pause) is the enemy of the printed paper (pause) but quality journalism will prevail. Language changes all the time and what is correct now may not be so in the future, but I would sub-edit the sentence with those same commas (I edit for online, not newspapers). I'm assuming he meant joke in the sense that an article about how the real threat facing newspapers was complacency and not enough proper, attention to detail journalism kicks off with a misspelt headline. It's appropriate enough to be great irony. Title: Re: Newpaper Post by: Lakov_Sanite on July 03, 2009, 01:40:02 PM Proper or not I can't help but read it in Shatner's voice.
