Title: Generation Kill
Post by: apocrypha on June 30, 2009, 01:31:55 PM
Is there really no thread about this already? If there is and my search-fu is low please den this!

Just started watching this and it's awesome. It's written by the same guys who did The Wire, and although (so far, on 3rd episode) it's no The Wire, it's still very powerful stuff. Probably not revelatory to anyone here but gritty, authentic feeling and has the usual superb HBO high production values. I could very happily sit (lie) down and watch all 7 episodes in one sitting.

Anyone with better knowledge than me care to comment on the authenticity?

You can find a bunch of good stuff about it on the Internet. Evan Wright was assaulted and tied up by some Marines when he attended some function after his book came out. They believed his story slandered the marines even if it was true. There is also some internet drama between the author and one of the officers portrayed in the movie, in which he the author pretty much cockslaps the guy claiming he lied.

I don't know if there's a thread round here but it's definitely been discussed in some of the old TV threads. It is a really great series and frankly I'd say it's behind the Wire in terms of depth but that's really more a case of the subject matter that's being tackled rather than the writing. There's definitely disagreement over the accuracy of it so even though it's meant to be (at least based on) true events I'm not sure how accuracte it is. Definitely has a really strong feeling of reality to it though, closest thing to a modern war movie in terms of giving us the experience and probably a much more realistic account than most previous generation's war movies. If anyone hasn't seen it yet they definitely should.

We talked about this show towards the end of that 65 page TV thread. I enjoyed the mini-series and the book quite a bit.

Ahh, I didn't have the stamina for that monster thread  :why_so_serious:

I'll check out the book too.

I really liked it and would watch it again. But I was anticipating it would all lead to a powerful ending, which for me it didn't. But it was still good.

I felt that the conversational tone and inter-personal interactions among the enlisted guys pretty much captured what I remembered of being enlisted and deployed to a combat zone.

Enjoyed the series, which prompted me to pick up the book. Also excellent.
