Title: Dragonica Preview Beta
Post by: Ghambit on May 29, 2009, 02:13:39 PM
...starts in 10 mins
You can score a key from pretty much all the major gaming communities (if there are any left).  I got mine from FP as usual.

Actually I think you're supposed to go here: http://dragonica.thqice.com/web/ as that's the one that starts today. I originally did the IAH one (your link) and it's not up. The whole thing was a bit confusing.

As far as keys go I just did a Google search for dragonica beta keys thq. Curse has a bunch. As does massively and a few other sites.

Interesting. Anyone play it yet? I don't have time tonight. This a 3D Maplestory?

Oh and just because I couldn't resist:

I'm trying it even though it's not an art style I care for. At all. But I'm bored. Really bored. Unfortunately, the test server they have up is full. So, I can't even try it.

And ya... looks completely  :pedobear:

I kinda like this art style only because it has a quasi-sickn'twisted quality about it.  Kinda like a clown does.  You can tell they werent going for totally "cutesy," but something more sinister like an Alice and Wonderland.

Sinister? Eh... I'm not seeing that. Just cutesy. Even the boys look like girls. And not the tough kind.

Here's some random thoughts after playing it for a bit:

You don't use the mouse for movement. Its all done with the keyboard which I don't care for much. I do, however, really really like the keyboard mapping configuration window. Instead of it being a drop down menu or something along those lines, you get a graphic keyboard mapping where you can drag and drop the actions to the key you want it on. For instance, the "C" key is mapped to jump. I can grab that function off of C with the mouse and drag it to the space bar. It's a really nice visual.

I can play in full screen but I can't change the resolution. So it looks better playing in the default tiny window. But its so small that an already busy screen is even more chaotic and hard to keep track of everything that's going on. I also can't seem to drag much of anything around. Lots of static windows and options. Like the chat window doesn't stretch. You click an arrow and get 5 different size options, one of those being minimize.

Everything is very smooth and intuitive. I like that you can click the mini map and get it to display a bigger version of itself in the middle of the screen instead of having to use the full map.

Hopping is as addicting in this MMO as it is in any other. In this one you get a brief sprint and the combination of that sprint plus jump zooms you up and into a flip. Its nifty.

Playing the game is like any other MMO. Kill quests, exploration quests and delivery quests. Nothing new here at all. At least not that I've seen.

Fighting critters can be tough due to the fact that its sometimes hard to determine where you are in relation to them. Its a side scroll game but you can move up and down. When things get crazy in a fight its difficult to figure out how far up or down you are. I'm positive this is something that you get better at with time, though.

The overall feel of the game is very Nintendo. It feels like a console game, is shiny like a console game and alot of the art work looks like something from a console game. I can just see this game being on the Wii.

That's all I got for now.

Well... clowns always creeped me out.  So stuff like this creeps me out too.  Everything has a weird look on their faces.  Not to mention the kind of violence I'm enacting on these "cutesy" creatures.  It's just not right.

Anyways, I'm having fun with this thing... woulda been better as a version of Contra or some other such platformer, but still fun.  Anyone got a guild up?

played a some chars to 20s and overall the warrior classes need work. It's just a terrible concept in PVE and I don't believe for one second PVP is a that fun when you're forced to eat ranged attacks from half a screen away. Raid bosses are mostly immune to crowd control effects which Warrior classes desperately need to execute vs trash mobs to even work effectively. So you can't tank and forced to play 'use specials and side step' most of the time.

Mages are the most fun classes out of them wall I think, totally viable in both PVP and PVE with a self heal even. Acolyte lacks punch in PVE but crowd control and debuff works great.

The European version had a beta just a week ago and I played it a little bit. It's a fun little arcade game. I had fun knocking things up, air juggling, dropping a rock on them while they were down, then relaunching them. Quests were standard, besides the open world stuff there are also mission instances where you get a letter grade and rewards based on your performance. I enjoyed it well enough, I can see it as something I'll play occasionally. (That is if the US version will let me register. Put in my birthday to start the reg process but nothing happens.)
