Title: Drag Me to Hell
Post by: DeathInABottle on May 27, 2009, 10:38:53 AM
The early reviews (http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/dragmetohell) are favorable (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/drag_me_to_hell/), but it's Sam Raimi doing horror, so no surprise there.  Out in two days.  Who else wants to see it opening night?

Ghost Hunters might actually be watchable if someone got sucked into hell every once in a while.

Very fun to watch. Classic Raimi. Lead actress will not be winning any Oscars.

Awesome movie and really all you can say is it's Sam Raimi.  If you liked evil dead 2 and army of darkness you'll like this.  It's certainly much better than I expected it to be.

Maybe the trailers don't do it justice. To me it looks a lot more like the glossy technicolor Spider-Man movies than Evil Dead. Maybe it's because the market has become saturated with flavor of the month generic young acrtress / actor beset by evil movies. The cast looks pretty awful and it doesn't look in any way scary, interesting or edgy.

No Marg, the trailers do not sell the movie well. Until I realized it was Raimi I wasn't interested at all; I went based on faith in him alone, and was not disappointed. If you didn't like any of the Evil Dead movies, don't bother.

The trailers just market it as a pure horror movie, which I imagine is probably the studio's influence.

The actors suck for the most part. This may even be by design but you certainly won't care that they do.

Is it intentionally campy?

Is it intentionally campy?

It's evil dead three, essentially.

Just got back from seeing this.  Fun flick; not exactly like an Evil Dead movie (it's just a smidge less campy) but the influences are very obvious.  LOVED the lead actress.  She had a few Ash-esque lines and scenes to do, and I thought she handled them well.  My only complaint (and it's a small one) is that I saw the ending coming from a mile off.

Shut your mouth. Evil dead 3 was Army of Darkness.

This movie, while it had all the nods, and hallmarks of a Raimi, it was a tad less campy. I thought it was a great entry, and had some really good parts.

Army of darkness was bruce campbell.  Granted it was awesome but I would consider drag me to hell closer in spirit to evil dead than army. Were I to watch them all marathon style it would actually go ED,ED2,DMTH,AOD simply because army would feel like a well rounded end cap.

Evil dead two was a remake of one, army of darkness was the continuation of that story line, and if you watched the real ending, it was not to be the last.

If you watched them in the order that you have suggested, you would be confused because you first watched the same movie twice, and stuck another movie that has nothing to do with the rest, in between the correct evolution of the story.

Evil Dead 2 was not a remake of 1; it was always intended by Raimi as a sequel.  The key events of 1 are covered in a very abbreviated version in the first fifteen minutes (rather than as a flashback as in Army of Darkness) because the studio assumed that almost nobody had seen the first movie, so they made Raimi get the audience up to speed before proceeding.  After Ash kills Linda we're all caught up with the basic premise and the story continues with Ash cutting off his hand, the professor's daughter showing up, and all that other stuff that didn't happen in 1.

If you really wanted to watch the Evil Dead series in pure chronological order with no overlap, you'd watch Evil Dead 1 up to the point where Ash kills Linda, then switch into Evil Dead 2 at the point right after that.  At the point where he's sucked through the portal, switch to Army of Darkness at the point where he comes out the other side.
