No lie. Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Sky on May 15, 2009, 01:24:36 PM That may be the coolest game update thing I've ever seen.
Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Prospero on May 15, 2009, 01:29:22 PM Seriously. The whole page is :drill:
Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Samwise on May 15, 2009, 01:39:56 PM I've been hoping for a cloak that would let you stay still indefinitely for a while. This is excellent.
I was also hoping they'd bring back the old Feign Death in some form. Having it drop a decoy corpse while you cloak is more :drill: than I'd dared to dream. Between all the spies and snipers I think it's going to be a great time to rack up some pyro and scout points. Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: schild on May 15, 2009, 01:40:46 PM holy shit
Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Ookii on May 15, 2009, 03:01:16 PM Goddamn spys! This will just make things worse. :oh_i_see:
Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Prospero on May 15, 2009, 03:38:44 PM SO I assume the pocket watch is a pistol replacement, which makes the shield make much more sense; some spies won't have the revolver to just shoot you with. I'm curious to see how that all plays out.
Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Teleku on May 15, 2009, 03:42:52 PM "All Historians agree that George Washington's greatest regret was not being PERMANENTLY INVISIBLE."
Christ that entire page is win. Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Samwise on May 15, 2009, 04:18:34 PM SO I assume the pocket watch is a pistol replacement We already have some evidence of another pistol replacement (that ivory-handled gun in yesterday's sniper picture). I'd figure the pocket watch either goes in the "watch" slot like its name would suggest (meaning that there are two different watch replacements in one update, egad) or goes in the sapper slot for a spy whose goal is assassination rather than sabotage. (edit) As a watch replacement, I'd hazard a guess that as a balance to the awesome decoy ability it can't be activated manually, making it the ideal choice for a spy who wants to depend heavily on his disguise to get around but still have a chance to make it past spy checks alive. Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Yegolev on May 15, 2009, 04:46:36 PM So, pyro then? :oh_i_see:
Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Samwise on May 15, 2009, 04:48:45 PM I'm going to be playing a SHITLOAD of pyro and maybe scout for a week or so after this update comes out. It's going to be glorious.
Also, it just occurred to me that watch unlocks won't give us new taunt animations. (edit) Holy shit, looking at the picture I just realized that the pocket watch thing is a perfect counter to the Razorback. That's brilliant. Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Strazos on May 15, 2009, 07:02:39 PM I understand the pyro, but why the desire to play scout so much? I mean, more than normal.
Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Hindenburg on May 15, 2009, 07:03:57 PM Strong class against snipers and spys.
Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Strazos on May 15, 2009, 07:06:06 PM How are they any stronger against spies? Am I forgetting something?
Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Prospero on May 15, 2009, 07:11:50 PM They're hard to backstab since tend to be in constant motion, and they are hard to hit with the pistol because they are coke fiends.
Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Samwise on May 15, 2009, 07:14:03 PM It's impossible to run up behind someone and backstab them if they run faster than you do.
Also, the FAN is a great spy checker. :why_so_serious: Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Strazos on May 15, 2009, 07:16:16 PM Oh, roger. Thought I may have been forgetting some sort of special ability the scout had to detect spies or something.
Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Kageru on May 16, 2009, 03:11:58 AM So a spy can stealth a distance, stay stealthed and regain energy, then move some more. I wasn't aware spy's needed to be more irritating, a really good one can already turn a battle almost single-handedly. Great page though, no argument there. And if this means the bow and arrow idea was just a joke even better. Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Malakili on May 16, 2009, 06:05:41 AM Well played Valve, well played.
Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Samwise on May 16, 2009, 08:26:57 AM So a spy can stealth a distance, stay stealthed and regain energy, then move some more. That's not 100% clear. When they put out the mini-spy update they indicated that getting to a dispenser while cloaked would "regenerate" your cloak, but really it only regenerates your cloak as fast as it's being used, so the power level stays constant rather than going up or down. I'm guessing that holding still while cloaked with this new watch will have the same effect; your cloak won't wear off, but it won't charge back up either. We'll have to see. Quote Great page though, no argument there. And if this means the bow and arrow idea was just a joke even better. No, I think the sniper stuff was for real. Valve said earlier that they didn't want to put out a sniper update and have everyone running around as snipers, so their plan is to combine the sniper and spy updates together. Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Triforcer on May 16, 2009, 07:18:26 PM That's not 100% clear. That would be fantastically underpowered. What I think is far more likely is that standing still while stealthed gives you the normal, 30 seconds-until-full replenishment (won't be faster, because that would make the watch a clear upgrade). Even if I'm right, the tradeoffs are still interesting. I can still think of many scenarios where ammo is plentiful and the original watch would better serve. The new one seems to be aimed at those people who like to stealth to the attacking class's spawn and gank people as they come out the door (or, in a slightly more useful maneuver, to get to the spawn to take out the teleporters). I can see myself using both. Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Kageru on May 16, 2009, 07:51:10 PM It will make playing as an engineer even more boring than it is now. If a spy can find a nice corner and "lurk" indefinitely every time you move, especially out of site of your gun, you risk insta-death from every corner. And as for chasing them down? Going to be playing pyro / scout for a couple of weeks when this goes live though. Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Triforcer on May 20, 2009, 02:53:08 AM My mind is whirling with the possibilities of the cloak and dagger. You can literally stand outside any spawn point (or in a heavily trafficked area, such as the 2fort pipe or near the first chokepoint on goldrush) indefinitely and invisible. Then, anytime someone comes at you, you just sidestep, decloak, gank, recloak, and repeat. You can stand in the best spots on the map and never worry about anything.
Arguably that kind of behavior by a spy is not as helpful to the team as other things, but... :drill: Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Anyway, heres more info: Quote Why did we build a new system? * With our first four class updates we were tying the new weapons for each class to a set of achievements. Our intention was to make a set of achievements that eventually all players would get, and would be fun to get along the way. In some cases we did a good job at this (Scout), and in some cases we did a bad one (Medic). Across all of the class packs we were disappointed in the number of people that got to play with the new weapons, and feedback from the community was generally not favorable with this approach. What did we do? * For the last number of months we've been working on using the Steam Cloud to store a player's inventory. With that finally in place, we were able to deploy a new system focused on the giving of items to players. That new system watches the amount of time that players are playing TF2, and gives them a chance to find items at regular intervals. They aren't guaranteed to get the item at those points, but they have a pretty good chance. We based the system on granting items on the amount of time played because we don't want players to have to do weird things like join achievement grinding servers to get new content. Basing it off time also has the benefit of ensuring that if you play a lot of TF2, you're going to get more items than players who don't. How long do I have to play to get an item? * When we were tuning this system we first looked at the average amount of time that players spend playing TF2 daily. From there, we set the goal of most players having around 20 items in their inventory after a couple of weeks of play. If you're someone who plays a lot of TF2, you're going to get items a lot faster than that. In the first few hours after the release yesterday, we had some issues that prevented the system from working properly, so that timeframe was not indicative of the system as it's designed. Is this the way we'll find items from now on? * Like everything else we build, we'll be iterating on this system for a while, and have a lot of features planned. Some of the next things we have planned are: - Item trading. This is why you're finding duplicates. - Giving players a method to influence the system so they can work directly toward getting specific items. - Adding more rare items like the hats. We're going to be working on and rolling these out while we're also working on the next class pack, with the goal being to get it all released before then. Source: http://teamfortress.com/post.php?id=2535 Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: schild on May 22, 2009, 04:25:53 PM This all pretty much guarantees that Valve is eventually going to make an MMOG. This is the sort of design methodology that's testing the grounds for such a thing as it's certainly not going to push a ton more TF2 boxes (the $9.99 price would have done that without any updates ever).

It's 100% random. You don't even have to be playing at all; people in spectator mode get drops too. Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Thrawn on May 24, 2009, 09:38:06 AM One piece of good news, Snipers with the bow and arrow suck monkey balls. Yes, it makes you better at mid range, but not as good as almost every other class. Seriously, if you must play Sniper, use the Rifle. I got the bow like RIGHT after the update and everyone keeps telling me it's the best thing ever but I quit using it after a few maps of trying it out. eldaec is pretty much spot on, the rifle is better. The bow is fun, and has some use in shorter range maps. But in most of those cases you're probably better just playing a different class. Bow snipers shooting at you long range are great because you can pretty much just watch them and dodge the arrows. Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Strazos on May 24, 2009, 10:23:27 AM The Bow is nice for narrow hallways, and it's always fun to loft shots at people.
Still going with the rifle though. Now I just need my razorback. Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Teleku on May 24, 2009, 08:04:13 PM I don't know guys, I've been watching snipers absolutely tear up maps using the bow and arrow. They can charge at you, pause for half a second when they see you, then one shot you, then keep charging. I watched a group of 3 actually charge the base on 2 fort and make it all the way to the intelligence doing this.
Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: Prospero on May 24, 2009, 08:30:01 PM Yeah, I saw some crazy Huntsman action last night. It sucks at long range, but good archers seem to tear shit up in short to medium range.

I'll drink to that. Played ten hours this week, got one upgrade (Axetinguisher, which I already had). So I'm looking at something like what, two hundred hours played to unlock everything? Fuck, this is a stupid idea. Title: Re: GENTLEMEN. Post by: eldaec on May 25, 2009, 02:23:36 AM I don't know guys, I've been watching snipers absolutely tear up maps using the bow and arrow. Soldiers, Demos, force-o-nature Scouts, and Pyros. Or anything with ubercharge support. And all those classes have a form of defence as well as a decent short range weapon. People are rating the huntsman because everyone is using it right now, so it is killing you more than most other weapons. OTOH How many snipers are you killing at the moment? I bet lots. |
