Title: Metaplace open beta
Post by: Raph on May 14, 2009, 05:02:00 PM
I know, there's a Meatspace forum. But nobody was in there. So mods can zap one thread or the other, or point it over there, or whatever.

Anyway, we're open beta now. Anyone can register.

http://www.metaplace.com

Hope to see some of you there.

Don't worry, everything is working fine.  It's my first try and I simply find it unsettling.

EDIT : picture worth a thousand words

Why are you there? :) Did you do the tutorial?

Besides there are FAR stranger worlds than that!! Have you found the Octomom one? Bob Saget one? On a boat?

Always wondered about the continuing motivation to invest in these worlds, and whether they'll run under linux/firefox, so seems like a chance to find out.

It really does look like a great framework for building an RPG with. Invent a decent combat system, rewards are design components and levels (without too much power inflation) and use the build capacity for something similar to the CoH mission architect.

There's a stats systems, several health bars, a couple of AI systems, and at least one simple RPG combat plugin on the marketplace.

What, you don't like that? There are much scarier worlds than THAT too.

Try stuff by Ambiani or Daallini if you want aesthetics, sheesh.

I'm afraid, what is this game about?

Edit: Oh a website, duh. Alright. So it's kind of like second life with combat?

Some worlds have combat.

If you start with "Power of Second Life, ease of The Sims, but on the web" that is about the right ballpark.

There's games in there, but fundamentally it's about creativity right now, at least until more people make more great content. Which we are actively helping them do.

Like second life eh?
I'm interested in hearing more about the penis and penis-related content.

There has been virtually none. Presumably because you guys have not shown up yet.  Worlds can be flagged mature, and they prompt before entry, so it's easy to avoid that stuff. I know of one world devoted to hentai, but its mostly a meeting room except for the background picture.

Waiting for the XML feed of world embeds.

I fired it up in the hopes of making a time management based porn studio game.
The interface is yuk. To be specific, it was very crowded on my 1024x768 res monitor. This made some of the tutorial popups scroll out of the screen, or overlap each other, making following them difficult.

Created an account and have been watching a progress bar sit at "connecting to server 19%" while "traveling to Quintons_World by Quinton".  Some error dialogs have popped up briefly and then vanished:

Quote
We tried to reach this world and failed. This could be because the network connection is just slow, or because the world isn’t running right now. We're trying again, though… don’t give up hope!

Firefox 3 on Linux, if that matters...

EDIT: Firefox 3 on winxp seems to have better luck.  Have I mentioned how craptacular flash is?

Seems to take ~2-3 seconds to load new options for hair, etc in the character creator thing, which makes something I normally enjoy (customizing an avatar) slow and painful.

I do like that I can resize the browser window.

Is there a way to talk to the backend directly if one is interested in hacking on some alternative to the flash browser client silliness?

There is a client section on the wiki https://alpha.metaplace.com/wiki/index.php/Client_Writing

There have been various attempts at clients, with the most advanced one to date being in Java that is/was intended for Android. If you catch Crwth on the global metaplace chat channel he can tell you all about it.

Slick.  Nice to see there are some docs available.  Seems like doing something basic in SDL wouldn't be too scary.  Will have to poke around.

How do I turn down the volume?

Why is my avatard a doey-eyed kid? I'm instantly turned off by this. I really, really don't like japanimation style.

Can I have a skin tone that looks natural? I seem jaundiced or ashen with the closest tones to mine.

I haven't had time yet =(

Oh hi!

*grumbles*

This is the tame version. You can however, change your avatar completely.

I have been working with a friend to use metaplace as another way to promote his artwork. The intent is to embed it on his site and other outlets.

You can see it here. (http://www.metaplace.com/AmuletsByMerlin/play)

That is seriously cool. I like how the actual objects are portrayed in game.

Talking about the shop? If so, make sure to "Pull the sword from the stone", it leads to a concept heavy journey we have been working on.

God-damn, you're old.  You'll next be crafting a lawn so you can chase dang kids off of it.  Call it MetamucilPlace.
