Title: Re: Be glad this isn't your family, and you aren't in these pictures. Post by: Sky on May 08, 2009, 01:24:09 PM Really? I didn't find it that funny. Between this, the non-slap chop remixes and the postcount++ thread, I'm happy to be old and not "getting it".
The one Mr BW posted is the only one I found awkward (or funny). Title: Re: Be glad this isn't your family, and you aren't in these pictures. The one Mr BW posted is the only one I found awkward (or funny). Yeah, i looked at all of them. The well has run dry. Title: Re: Be glad this isn't your family, and you aren't in these pictures. Title: Re: Be glad this isn't your family, and you aren't in these pictures. Post by: Merusk on May 08, 2009, 01:34:43 PM There were a few I found approaching-awkward, and a lot of bad photos (all the family in bright, white shirts? That seemed like a good idea? Really?) but yeah, I must be old. Then again I never got off on mocking 'weird looking' people, as I know I'm probably weird looking to plenty. :awesome_for_real:

Haha. Title: Re: Be glad this isn't your family, and you aren't in these pictures. Post by: Merusk on May 08, 2009, 02:56:13 PM My brother and his new girlfriend sent us all X-mas cards like that 2 years ago. Matching sweaters, holding the dog and everything. I quietly tucked it away and never asked about it. I learned last summer that apparently it was meant to be a joke, mocking such cards and I just didn't get it. Perhaps because the last GF he had seriously wanted to do that kind of thing, and I figured he gave in with the new one.

Title: Re: Be glad this isn't your family, and you aren't in these pictures. Post by: apocrypha on May 08, 2009, 10:31:15 PM My girlfriend's brother and his wife DO regularly have photos like these taken of themselves. Local portrait studios, probably really not cheap, but utterly, utterly terrible. Cheesy poses, horrific painted backdrops, period costumes, the works, they'd fit right in on that website. The "photographers" working in these places must hate themselves.
It's very disturbing because it makes the enormous gulf between them and us so apparent - they genuinely love these photos and, well, there's no accounting for taste, however bad it is. Title: Re: Be glad this isn't your family, and you aren't in these pictures. Post by: Sir T on May 09, 2009, 06:45:43 AM I actually found a lot of those photos to be rather sweet.
That said when you have a caption on one that has the whole reason that is embarrassing is that they are lying on some dead leaves, you can tell the people running the website are reaching too. Title: Re: Be glad this isn't your family, and you aren't in these pictures. Post by: Paelos on May 09, 2009, 09:17:42 AM The last Christmas card our family sent out was us standing in front of Fenway Park on our Boston vacation. The year before that, it was us in front of the Chicago Mirror Ball. We do get pictures from other members of the family who do the studio thing with their kids, which I always just toss. I don't get why my cousins just take photos of the children and never any with them all together. I don't really even like their kids that much.
Title: Re: Be glad this isn't your family, and you aren't in these pictures. Post by: NowhereMan on May 09, 2009, 09:21:06 AM I don't think anyone in my family does this, not even the many, many Americans. Frankly I can understand family photos but why the hell would you be wanting to send them to people you don't see? And they're the only people there could conceivably be a reason to send them to. Oh and the ascending height family photo is pretty awesome, that's one of the few exceptions where I wouldn't want to just throw it away.
Title: Re: Be glad this isn't your family, and you aren't in these pictures. Post by: Paelos on May 09, 2009, 09:33:51 AM Outside of immediate family and close friends, a lot of people send them out to business contacts and longtime friends in other states in America. Frankly, I would never do that, but my parents always like to have one photo from our yearly vacation to remind the populace we're all still alive, I guess.
Title: Re: Be glad this isn't your family, and you aren't in these pictures. Post by: Bzalthek on May 10, 2009, 10:54:36 PM Apparently it's the social thing to do for the previous generation. Family and friends you don't get to see often, you send them a card that contains a family photo and a letter updating them on what's been going on. It's largely irrelevant these days what with facebook/myspace/internet in general. God, it's almost anachronistic having to say that.
Me, I'm more of the 'out of sight out of mind' kinda person. I don't see my friends for years at a time which makes it real interesting when you find out two of the most baked out druggies you hung out with in school (free entertainment) are now straight-laced cops. I think I've come to the end of the internet??? Title: Re: Be glad this isn't your family, and you aren't in these pictures. Post by: Bunk on May 11, 2009, 05:54:32 AM I see that site as a being a great personal resource on how not to take portraits.
I really don't know whether or not to complain to to Big Gulp about that last picture being NSFW. Does fake fuzzy genetalia count as NSFW? I also stand by the assertion that the picture is perfectly safe for work. It's not like I'm linking to bangedup.com or something. If your work frowns on a family in fuzzy pink genitalia suits then you need to find a new place of employment. :why_so_serious: Title: Re: Be glad this isn't your family, and you aren't in these pictures.
