EDIT:

Looks like this game now has a name.  Apparently Kari Wahlgren, one of the voice actresses from Jade Empire, has recorded her voice for a new BioWare game called "Hot Shots".

New RPG with a female lead?  (Judging from the male love interest)

And I don't think Captain Awesome is tough enough for them.  Or old enough.  Random thought: He'd make a good Captain America though.

Considering their casting descriptions, we're going for all the demographic stereotype fantasies.  She's strong, sensual and wants nothing more than to cure cancer, shoot a nazi, and then come home, make you dinner, a martini, and perform fellatio.

I eagerly await the forthcoming press release that will discuss their strong narrative and ground breaking characters which will duly be cut and pasted and "reported" on by Kotaku as the WORD OF GOD.

It would be nice to see a request for "a woman" or "a female built like a brick house" for a change.  It's just so stereotypical it becomes funny.

Disagree.

"a woman"

As far as "videogame" hotties go, Uncharted and Half-Life 2 were reasonably realistic.

Last time the industry tried to promote a realistic female, we ended up with what amounted to a thai tranny

Didn't EQ2 have more "realistic" female models from a measurement standpoint?  I remember many people complaining about the way female toons looked.

I remember being initially turned off from Alyx for very minor reasons, hair, voice, etc, and then realized she wasn't the usual super-sexy bouncyboob ninjalluring computer whiz sharpshooter, and now all other female characters in video games pale by comparison.

I think that's the biggest reason I hate Bayformers so much; the casting call asked for a "Super sexy computer hacker".

They were still well-proportioned, but yes, they were much more realistic.  I rather liked their models since my Arasai looked feminine without being hyper-sexualized.

Mass Effect, too.  Every time I play it I'm struck at how the women in it aren't any more idealized than the men.

Once they've been scanned and converted into computer graphics faces, maybe not. Depends on the engine, platform, etc.

The entire supersexalized female trope is just fucking tiresome.  Maybe it's because I'm not a 14 year old boy anymore, but I'd like to see the industry move away from it at least occasionally.   In part though, it's also because Bioware keeps being trotted out as an example of awesome dialogue and mature and from the casting call, it may as well be code for "Ability to speak two syllable words and jiggle."

Personally, I think it's a good thing that the game playing lesbian who wants to see more 'butch' models is a very small demographic and not worth pandering too.

Also, anyone who doesn't think the female bodies in Mass Effect were idealized has no idea what 'idealized' means or what real women look like or, at least, never took off the heavy armor.

I, for one, rather enjoy smoking hot females and would prefer if we just maintained the status quo here.  I don't give two shits about realism in this case, any more than I would if this was porn.  These are video games.

I said they weren't more idealized than the men.  They were fit and nicely proportioned, very much an idealized human form, but they weren't entirely unrealistic.  The women didn't have massive breasts, their waists weren't pencil thin, and female Shepard even had a bit of a belly instead of rock hard abs.  Almost like they based their models on humans.  There is a big difference between idealized and pure fantasy.

No, that would be East Asian vs South Asian.

Oriental is for rugs and 1930s Dragon Ladies.

Mosesandstick, are you not from the US? The common usage of "Asian" here when talking about ethnicity typically does not include the entire continent of Asia, but refers only to East Asians. That would explain the confusion.

Title: Re: Bioware Unannounced RPG is... Hot Shots?
Post by: NowhereMan on May 07, 2009, 02:48:07 PM
Whereas if that same ad had been posted in the UK they'd be looking for someone from the subcontinent. Of course either way it's pretty broad generalisations of people who don't actually look exactly the same although I'm not sure if it would be worse to have a Korean actor playing a Chinese role than to have a Slavic actor playing a Western European role.

Americans are forced to say "Asian" now because it's just vague enough not to piss everyone off.

If you see that though, they don't mean Russian.

Naw, I'm not. I was born and raised in Singapore. Making me Asian/Oriental/East Asian/ South East Asian/ who gives a fuck/ etc.

I've been around enough to know the general useage of the terms (surly's post on south vs. east asians makes perfect sense to me), I was just commenting on the useage of the term. I mean it's blatantly incorrect, but it's part of the lingo. Not blaming bioware, I mean if they're looking to get East Asian models in America it would probably be the perfect term to use for those airheads  :-).

I have a fully Russian friend who is definitely part Asian  :oh_i_see:.

Asian is common enough that people know what you mean even if it isn't 100% accurate. Sometimes all that matters is the jist of what is being said. The Asian / Russian / Middle Eastern / Indian works pretty well.

These casting calls were also made at modelmayhem.com (http://www.modelmayhem.com/1023425) along with couple others.
Quote
Role: Pira

Type: FEMALE / 20 to 25 / Mixed or Exotic ethnicity.  The model needs to be beautiful, interesting and unique, ideally a racial hybrid.  Lithe, slender and graceful.
Quote
Role: Andrea

Type: FEMALE / 30 to 40/ Caucasian/European.  The model needs to be beautiful but tough, hard, wiry, slim but muscular.  This is a character who can command with her eyes.  Great bone structure and eyes.

also, initial calls were made for "Lian", "Katharyn", "Omar" and "Mystery Man". The ones for "Natasha", "Pira" and "Andrea" were added ~month later. Might mean something abouth the relative importance of characters, or nothing at all.

Tbh right now the cast makes it look more like one of these Japanese dating sims. The ubermensch protagonist, the obligatory male friend (Carth 3.0) and --at this point-- 5 potential love interests to cover range of visual tastes.

Of course, that doesn't rule out possibility this is indeed Mass Effect 2
