Title: New zune is looking pretty sweet
Post by: Salamok on April 16, 2009, 06:19:02 AM
HDMI Out
Multi Touch
Web Browsing?
Xbox Support?

http://www.pcworld.com/article/163153/more_zune_hd_details_emerge.html

With a speculative feature list bordering on the mystical i don't know why they didn't just say it comes with a 1tb flash drive as well.

I don't know what's more awesome, the Zune HD or the PSP2 as according to the internet.

PSP2 looks sweet, but I wish it had a (huge) hdd or something. I'd adopt it as a media player then. Flash gigabytes at typical media player sizes are just too pricey (40gb +?).

Anyways, my ipod conked out, but I want to replace it with something a little more platform neutral (this excludes the Zune too obviously). Even better if it was a phone too. There doesn't seem to be shit out there (?).

HDMI Out

Wut?  You mean they won't require a proprietary decryption cable that costs an extra $50 in order to get basic video out?  How will they ever make any money?

Yes, still bitter about the fucking iPod thing.  I hope against hope that someone, anyone, eats Apple's lunch.

It isn't going to happen anytime soon when the majority of customers who don't go the ipod way are simply doing it out of spite. You can only have so many customers that way. Most of this stuff is going to come down to the same thing, so the real playing field is brand recognition/hipness. And like it or not, nobody seems to have it like Apple does. Definitely not Microsoft for sure. But not even other established media companies can seem to compete on the brand level. I wish that wasn't the case, even speaking as an Apple customer.

I'm willing to bet money that if the HDMI interface follows standards, the connector type does not. The cable will initially only be available as an accessory from MS, and a few months later it will be followed by third party cables that are cheaper but still absurdly overpriced compared to standard HDMI cables.

The official reason for not using a standard connector will come down to the non-standard one having a better form factor, it costing five cents less or it being a more eco-friendly manufacturing process.

Some even speculate the PMP will support 3D Xbox games, if the Zune HD will actually use Nvidia's Tegra chipset.

I speculate it will also make me coffee, if it includes the Bosch TKA 2831 attachment.

Once they combine a HDMI portable media player + 1tb flash memory (http://nextechnews.com/2008/03/1tb-flash-thumb-drives-on-the-horizon-array-based-flash-the-key/) + Web Browsing and it performs decently (nice quality and as easy as plugging in the HDMI cable) then people will start using these to replace their HTPC's.  Get that below $500 and even my cheap ass will buy one.

I just got an iPod Touch in the mail (monday morning surprise!). I really don't see Microsoft being able to compete with stuff just appearing in the mail. HAR HAR HAR. I am not funny today.

The Zune has the ability to fuck up your PC and Xbox simultaneously.  Can your iPod do that?
