Title: Who are your favorite bands?
Post by: Train Wreck on December 07, 2004, 01:04:19 PM
I need more music, but I'm maxed out on the bands I'm familiar with.  I need some ideas of other music to try out.

Bands I've been listening to the most lately are Lifehouse, Cold, the Cure, the Smiths, U2, Depeche Mode, and Billy Idol (soon to release his first new album in 10 years, hope it's good).

Modest Mouse is a good newer one. The one single has been overplayed to death, but their albums are pretty varied and have good deep tracks.

Edit: Oh, and as for newer bands, I've been digging The Killers. Hot Fuss is the name of their record. Like $8.99 at Best Buy and Amazon has a cute little story about them up.

Spock's Beard (http://www.spocksbeard.com/) has a brand new album coming out in January.

From the sound clips, it looks to kick you, your family, and your neighbor's dog's ass from here to Poughkeepsie.

The two best albums I bought this year were Marillion's Marbles (http://www.marillion.com) and IQ's Dark Matter (http://www.gep.co.uk/iq/).

Hmm... maybe it's time to be a necro poster again.

I haven't heard of any of these bands before.  I guess I spend too much time in my own little world.

Don't feel bad. No one has heard of most of the bands that everyone else is posting unless you are very much into whatever the flavor-of-the-month name for that style is.

Not to bash I'm just honestly not sure how to differentiate between techno, house, industrial, emo, goth, what-have-you...  Yeah, I'm getting old and out of touch...

Edit: Modest Mouse I have hear of but can't place the song right now...

Holy crap, thank you very much for rehashing the nightmare that was "pop music" in the 80s.

We all float on...

Heh, I'm probably one of the few people that doesn't give a singular crap about music.  I haven't bought a CD in probably over 2 years.  The only ones I tend to listen to are from the Clash, Jimmy Hendrix Experience, and Beck (can't even remember the names of the CDs). I listen to radio, but 90% of the time it's so bad I either just tune it out or listen to NPR. Since my last hard drive wipe, I haven't downloaded a single MP3.

I just find it hard to care about music when I hate 99% of what's currently being shoved down the radio at me.  It's made me so damn turned off at the entire form of entertainment I can't bother to find something that I don't consider absolute crap.

Damn, I went from hip to lame in a span of 2 years. WTG me.

It was so much simpler when things were either Rock or Alternative.

I've probably heard a lot of the stuff, I just dont know what it's called or who it's by.  I finally took the time to track shit down -- a few tracks were by Cold, one called Amber by 311, and Wait by Earshot.  Cold was the only one I'd heard of before.

I listen to a huge variety of music from all eras, I just love music. Currently I'd say my favorite band is Iron Maiden, but it'll be different next week.

Zep, Floyd, Willie Nelson, Slipknot, AC/DC, Sum 41, Clapton, Mudvayne, Slayer, Charlie Patton, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Sabbath, Portishead, The Distillers, Fear, Big Bill Broonzy, I love 'em all. Whatever fits my mood is my favorite at that time.

Amen to that. Cleveland radio is fucking horrible. I'm pretty sure Clear Channel owns every single channel here except the two college radio stations that only come in half the time and you're at the whim of whichever student DJ happens to be on.

I've pretty much given up on radio myself and I'm kicking myself that a year ago when I replaced my car cd player I didn't get one that was XM or Sirius ready.

There is still a lot of good music being made and right now I'm much into what's considered the jam band scene. I've always been a fan of more classic rock, blues and jazz and that's the style of music you get out of a lot jambands:

ie...

Ben Harper
Gov't Mule
Jack Johnson
Robert Randolph
Moe
OAR
Bela Fleck
Galactic
Medeski Martin & Wood
G. Love & Special Sauce
Keller Williams
and any of Les Claypool's 300 bands...

I've been on an Evanescence kick for a while now.  There, I've admitted it.

Scrolling through my top rated list in iTunes, other bands that stick out:
Beatles
Cake
Dido
Iron Maiden
Lunatic Swing
Marcy Playground
Rob Zombie
Seadogs
Silly Wizard
System of a Down
White Stripes

None of those bands are pop bands (with the exception of a few Billy Idol songs, such as Name Without A Face.  But he also had Rebel Yell.).  80's pop is stuff like Michael Jackson, Debbie Gibson, Cindy Lauper.  The bands I mentioned were considered Alternative, though that has since been broken apart fifty which-ways.

Just because I like the band, it doesn't mean I like most of their songs.  If I'm lucky, there will be more than three songs on the entire album that I enjoy.  Such is the way things are when they come out with hit material but have to drudge up nine more songs to put it out.

Rush. No other bands compare. But if you need otheres, I've lately been on Evanescence, Coldplay, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and I just replaced my old tape version of Faith No More's "Angel Dust" on CD. For a kick in the "What the hell is this?" try some Tom Waits.

Just to list some thing different I really like the "Queen of the Damned" soundtrack. It is all original music written by Jonathan Davis, the lead singer songwrite for Korn, and performed by people like David Dramain of Desturbed, Marilyn Manson, and Tricky. Great album.

I also REALLY REALLY like the Spawn soundtrack. Its all kind of metal/alternative metal remixed by DJs, but not in a dancey remix kind of way, its all remixed to make it darker. Love it.

And, Tool. I love Tool. Go buy Aenima if you dont have it.

Yeah, Cleveland radio sucked when I was groing through high school there.  Before that WMMS was a good station, but that was before the dark times, before Clear Channel.   Fucking a if they'd just transfer the format of WEBN here in Cincinnati up there it'd be a good rock station again.  The End was a pretty cool alternative station when it was up there, but it only lasted about 2 years before it went under and became a hip-hop station.

Radio is dead. your only hope is to find a station that puts out a decent stream or find a satellite radio station that doesn't make your ears bleed.

If you're into prog, there are a ton of great bands out there that you would enjoy. These bands can keep going despite zero radio play because their fan bases are smaller, but incredibly rabid. For example, two of the bands I mentioned eariler (Marillion and IQ) have been around and successful for over 20 years, yet most people have never even heard of them.

Just to start, you can try:

Porcupine Tree
Dream Theater
Transatlantic
Shadow Gallery
Frogg Cafe
Glass Hammer
Echolyn
Opeth
The Flower Kings
Ayreon
Kevin Gilbert (not active because he's kinda dead, but still brilliant)

EDIT: Prog is progressive rock, e.g. early Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd et al.

Queen
Beatles
The Who
Robert Johnson
Screamin' Jay Hawkins
Bonzo Dog
Van Morrison
Jimi Hendrix
Nick Cave
Tupac
Mr. Bungle
Duran Duran
David Bowie

I'll second Haemish's Tom Waits suggestion.  Some of my favorite songs of his:  Romeo is Bleeding, Singapore, and Pasties and a G-string.

if you're looking for some new music, here's my list. mostly populated by the various flavors of indie rock, and also some IDM (as it is generally known)

indie junk
---
Broken Social Scene (indie powerpop, fun stuff)
Do Make Say Think (simple, but brilliant instrumental band)
Elliot Smith (mostly acoustic singer/songwriter sort of thing)
Explosions in the Sky (epic guitar orchestral music)
Godspeed You Black Emperor! (epic apocalyptic post-rock)
Goldfrapp (somewhat similar to Portishead?)
Interpol (solid stuff, first album especially)
Metric
Mogwai (Scottish indie rockers. semi-epic guitar postrock, one of my favs)
Pretty Girls Make Graves (more indie powerpop, female singer)
Rachel's (a bunch of indie rock kids making classical music)
Sigur Ros (icelandic. unlike anything else. highly recommended.)
Sleater-Kinney (angry chick indie rock)

electronic musics (far from stereotypical thumping-bass club fare)
like 80% of it is on Warp records
---
Amon Tobin (jazz/latin/electronica hybrid. get the album Bricolage)
Aphex Twin (one of the most brilliant musicians of our time IMO)
Autechre (glitched out computer music. awesome stuff.)
Boards of Canada (very warm, 'pastoral' electronic music)
Boom Bip (fun unique electronic music, with some hiphop influences)
DJ Krush (keeps the best elements of hiphop, gets rid of the MC)
Jega (more awesome computer music)
M83 (somewhere between glitch and guitar noise. kinda harsh, but i dig it)
Meat Beat Manifesto (fun electronica for everyone)
Squarepusher (somewhere between live jazz and drum'n'bass. drill'n'bass)
Two Lone Swordsmen (computer music with bass-heavy electro leanings)
Mu-Ziq (often written with greek character 'Mu'. kinda like squarepusher. highly recommended.)

I probably listen to too much old stuff as well, so I'll second all the old bands already mentioned..Stones, Zep, AC/DC, Jimi, Beatles, Queen, Rush (and btw, I'm an Elvis freak).. All of that stuff is given. I also listen to a lot of even older shit these days, like pre-War Blues or World music (especially Arab or Gypsy type stuff) and Classical etc..

But everyone has their favorites...So let's see:

Prong
Sonic Youth
X
The Misfits
Bad Brains
Skinny Puppy
The Wipers
Black Flag
Black Sabbath
Squarepusher
Rakim
Kool Keith
Lee Perry
The Misfits
Big Black/Shellac/Steve Albini
John Coltrane
Television/Tom Verlaine
The Misfits
The Stones
Bob Dylan
Elvis/Jerry Lee/Roy/Johnny Cash
Did I already mention the Misfits?

Oh yeah since no one else has mentioned them I feel obligated to direct you toward The Flaming Lips (http://www.flaminglips.com).

As a nice bonus you can stream a ton of their music from their website to get a nice sampling. You can also stream their entire latest album, although their middle albums (clouds taste metallic & The soft bulletin) are better.

The Flips put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Unless you have a fear of Furries that is, then stay away....

The movie was craptacular, but that album was the last piece of vinyl I bought - three lovely red/seethrough 10 inch discs.
... that I can't play now, because I don't have a turntable anymore.

The Judgment Night soundtrack was also a good mix of unusual team ups. The Teenage Fanclub/De La Soul and the Helmet/Hopuse of Pain was probably my faves.

Train Wreck, there's a new triple-cd with a lot of the best Depeche Mode remixes. Most of their good b-sides (not all - they made a shitload of b-sides).

Music I listen to now (apart from my revival trips, which are just a symptom of old age):

Franz Ferdinand,
Cake,
Fatboy Slim (I liked the new album, sue me)
Chemical Brothers
Evanescence
Ministry (House of the Mole was the best thing to come out of the first 4 years of the Bush' presidency)
Voodoo Child (Moby)

Evanescance
Old Metallica (pre Black)
AC/DC box set

White Zombie

Garbage
The Cardigans

I guess I'm just gay.  I don't like much newer music.  I tend to stick with classics.  I mean REAL classics.  Vivaldi is a favorite.  Debussy is always good for those impressionist moods.  Mozart and Beethoven aren't two of the best known composers for nothing.  Plus I have a cyclying soundtrack thing going too, All the LOTR soundtracks, Braveheart, Oh Brother Where Art Thou and of course, the Gladiator soundtrack.
I suppose for newer stuff, I adore Mazzy Star and would have her babies on command.  And for a sort of Irish/English medieval sound, I love Loreena McKennit...
I just listen to what I feel like.  I haven't listened to the radio for music in probably five years...

True enough.  I don't have any of Depeche Mode's pre 1986 stuff, so I tend to forget about that era.  I'm not a big fan of White Wedding and Dancing With Myself, though they were big hits.  But a couple of his songs are on my short All-Time-Favorites list, so I consider him to be one of my favorites, especially after his kick-ass cameo in The Wedding Singer, which set the stage for his Vital Idol release (the only CD of his I actually have).

U2 is another one of those bands where I like less than half of their stuff, but the songs I do like are some of my ATFs, such as New Years Day and Street With No Name.

I like a lot of different stuff, but half the time I don't know who it is (usually because I listen to internet radio, such as Digitally Imported or Chronix Agression).

These are the CD's I currently have in my changer:

Incubus - A crow left of murder
A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth step
Chevelle - This Type Of Thinking Could Do Us In
    Animatrix Soundtrack
    Audioslave[/list:u]

    Other bands I enjoy:

    Tool
    Smashing Pumpkins
    Nirvana
    Metallica
    Nine Inch Nails
    Bush
    Marcy Playground
    Massive Attack
    Portishead
    The White Stripes
    Deftones
    Cold
    Marilyn Manson
    Rage Against the Machine
    Switchblade Symphony
    System of a Down
    Type O Negative
    Hooverphonic
    Mox
    Queen of the Damned Soundtrack[/list:u]

And there's more, but those are my favorites.

A Perfect Circle
Radiohead
Muddy Waters
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Albert King
Audioslave
Evanescence
Deftones
Primus
Red Hot Chili Peppers

I recently caught Los Lonely Boys live and I like their live show, haven't heard their album at all. I like talented three pieces, though.

Hammenstein, I'd agree about Rush, but there's the whole synthesizer thing. The early stuff was incredible, and they've consistently put out good music, even when it had synths. But I dream of an alternate reality where synths hadn't been invented and Rush was God ;)

And nothing wrong with liking George Jones, one of the best country artists of all time, he was great. Have I ever mentioned I ran sound for Porter Wagoner on a sound system I built at home with my stepfather? Good times. I was 16 or 17 (state fair gig). He was gracious enough to thank me, though I'm sure it was far below what he was used to, real class act, Mr. Wagoner.

And, Tool. I love Tool. Go buy Aenima if you dont have it.

How the heck did Tool slip my mind? Tool is probably my overall favorite band.

My music taste is mostly metal, from the current trend of black metal (There are some extremely gifted musicians, though far and few between), all the way back to the classics like Sabbath and Priest.

In the vein of the original poster, I'd definitely agree with Sugar(One of my all time favorite bands, no matter how short lived), The Stone Roses, Something Happens, Joy Division, The Sisters of Mercy, World Party (Yeah, I grew up in the 80's)  Definitely along the same lines as what you're interested in.

  My most played from my Ipod are these artists;

Testament(Old school thrash)
Anacrusis(Power Metal)
All That Remains(Metalcore, local to me)
Shadows Fall(Metalcore/Thrash, local to me)
Killswitch Engage(Metalcore, local to me)
Iced Earth(Power Metal)
Tori Amos (Piss off, I'm a piano player)
Mnemic(Industrial? Metal)
Slayer(Death Metal)
Before the Dawn (Gothic Metal)

Do Make Say Think (simple, but brilliant instrumental band)

Explosions in the Sky (epic guitar orchestral music)
Godspeed You Black Emperor! (epic apocalyptic post-rock)
Goldfrapp (somewhat similar to Portishead?)
Interpol (solid stuff, first album especially)
Metric
Mogwai (Scottish indie rockers. semi-epic guitar postrock, one of my favs)
Pretty Girls Make Graves (more indie powerpop, female singer)
Rachel's (a bunch of indie rock kids making classical music)

Sleater-Kinney (angry chick indie rock)

What he said.

Didn't look too bad from what I scanned through (I grew up in the 80s).

You need better choices on AC/DC songs though, and really man, if you're only going to have two Metallica albums, why Load!?!
